My invention, in one of its phases, relates to a system, mechanism or arrangement for detwisting or untwisting moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strands, or the like, to a pre determined or desired degree.
My invention has particular reference to a system or arrangement for producing or preparing detwisted or untwisted textile yarn of the general character described in my United States Letters Patent No. 1,295,821, granted February 25, 1919, for textile yarn and method of making the same and of the character more specifically described in my United States Letters Patent #1,7 43,7 22,
granted Jan. 14, 1930, for method of preparing textile yarn, and resulting products.
My invention relates to yarn detwisting system or arrangement of simple construction and great practicability; my invention further relates to such a system or arrangement for detwisting moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strands and designed particularly to avoid operating difliculties occasioned by the presence of the moistened gum on the yarn, or by the presence of lint, dirt or other foreign matter gathered by or on the moistened yarn.
My invention resides in the system, mechanism, arrangement and features of construction of the character hereinafter described and claimed.
For an illustration of one of the forms which my yarn detwisting system, mechanism or arrangement may take, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in
which:

are moistened and passed to individual detwisting mechanisms. I In Fig.1, a member 1 is shown as having woundthereon a yarn structure A which comprises a plurality of strands, lengths or threads B of ordinary fibrous, twisted yarn of the character utilized informing textile fabric of the interlaced strand type, as one whose strands are inter laced one with the other such, for example, as woven fabric, or fabric whose strand is interlaced on itself as, for example, knitted fabric, etc. The aforesaid yarn strands B may be spun in the usual manner from sliver, roving, etc., and have the necessarytwist to permit handling and gumming.
Disposed adjacent the yarn structure A and of suitable length is a tank or receptacle 2 containing a suitable coating and gumming medium 3, as an ordinary yarn sizing starch solution which, ordinarily but not necessarily, is hot in the sense that it is below the boiling point but above ordinary room tem erature, the twisted yarn strands B passing from left to right, Figs. 1 and 1a, over a guide roller 4 and then through the coating and gumming medium 3 because directed beneath guide rollers 5 and 6. From the receptacle 2, the twisted, gummed yarn strands B pass be-' tween the closely arranged driven squeezing rollers 7 and 8 which serve to remove excess coating and gumming material from said" yarn strands B and to feed the latter from the member 1, the roller 8, preferably dipping into the. coating and gumming medium;
thereafter, the twisted, g'ummedyarn strands B pass under the guide rollers 9 and 10, the latter maintaining said twisted, gummed yarn strands B in engagement with the periphery. of a rotatable drum 11 maintained at suitable temperature for so drying the gumming and coating medium now on the yarn strands B that said medium is no longer moist or tacky. After leaving the drum '11 and roller 10, each twisted, gummed yarn strand B may be wound upon a spool 12, Fig. 1, the spools 12 being positively operated by suitable mechanism permitting any spool 12 to slip with respect to its driving means whereby the twisted yarn strands'are properly wound upon the respective spools 12.

For purposes of explanation of my invention and as shown in Fig. 2, the twisted,
' gummed yarn strands B are shown as being unwound from the aforesaid spools 12 and, in suitable spaced relation, passing first beneath a guide roller or non-rotatable rod 17, preferably of glass, and then over a roller 18 formed of any suitable material but preferably a non-corrosive metal, said roller 18 dipping into aliquid medium 19 contained in a trough or receptacle 20a and being rotated in any suitable manner and at any suitable speed. Ordinarily, the aforesaid liquid medium 19 is ordinary water which, by the roller 18, serves to moisten the twisted, gummed yarn strands B. From the roller 18, the moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strands B pass through the guide eyes 19a and then between and partly around each of the closely adja cent rollers 20 and 21, roller 20, preferably, being positively driven and roller 21 driven frictionally thereby.- In lieu of water, however, any other suitable liquid medium may be disposed in the receptacle 20a and in lieu of the rollers 20 and 21, any other suitable yarn strand feeding arrangement may be utilized.
The moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strands B are now in condition for the de-' twisting action but, before passing to the detwisting mechanism per se, each moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strand B, in accordance with a very important feature of my in.- vention, is brought into engagement, preferably, with a peripheral groove 22 in a roller- 23 freely rotatable in bearings, not shown, and positively driven, usually, in any suitable manner as, for example, by a belt 24:. The roller 23 'may be rotated in either direction and at any suitable speed but preferablyis rotated in the direction of yarn strand movement and at substantially the same speed as that of the yarn.
Disposed adj acentthe roller 23 is a rod 25 maintained in fixed position in any suitable manner. The rod 25 pivotally supports a plurality of groove cleaning devices 26, one of which is provided for each of the grooves 22. ,Each groove cleaning device 26, preferably, is a single piece of metallic material having a straight end section carrying a readily removable fabric sleeve or, cover 27 received, adjacent its end, in the adjacent groove 22 of roller 23, the configuration of said sleeve or cover 27 being such that it is readily disposable in the aforesaid groove 22. Each groove cleaning device 26 is biased in a counterclockwise direction, Fig. 2, in suitable manner. To this end, each device 26 may comprise a weighted end 26a serving for the purpose just stated.
Beyond the roller 23, each moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strand B extends to detwisting mechanism of. any suitable char- 1 acter. For this purpose, if desired and as illustrated in Fig. 2, there may be utilized mechanism of a character well known to the art for imparting twist to yarn, such mechanism, however, being operated in the proper direction for removing the twist to a suitable degree from the moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strand B being fed thereto. Accordingly, the detwisting mechanism for each yarn strand B may comprise a vertical spindle 28 suitably journaled'in members 29 and 30, said spindle 28 being suitably rotated at a desired speed, as by a band or belt 31 coacting with a pulley 32 pinned or otherwise suitably fixed to said spindle 28. Preferably, the upper end of spindle 28 is tapered to removably receive a bobbin 33 upon which the untwist-ed or detwisted yarn strand is wound, the latter passing from the roller 23, beneat-ha traveller 34 and then toward said bobbin 33 to which one'end of the strand to be detwisted is initially secured. As is usual, the traveller 3a is loosely mounted on a ring 35 carried by a ring rail 36 having the rod 37 connected thereto and reciprocated in'a vertical direction in any suitable manner. As shown-in Fig. 2, yarn bearing the wetted gum is kept under thedesired tension during the detwisting operation, so that according to they preferred method of operation dis closed herein the tensioning of the detwisted yarn bearing the soft gum (the advantages of'which are fullyset forth in my above mentioned copending application) is effected by the detwisting device.
Accordingly, each bobbin 33, or equivalent, has wound thereon a detwisted or untwisted yarn strand obtained, in each instance, from a previously moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strand B, the gum binding the fibres together so as to give the yarn its necessary strength. The detwisting or untwisting action occurs substantially between the roller 23 and the traveller 34 and the extent of this action may be suchas is suitable or desirablesincerthe rate of yarn feed as determined by the rollers 20 and 21 together with the rotative speed ofthe spindle 28 are primary controlling factors, and these may be varied as desired. Ordinarily, the twist is not entirely removed from the moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strand. Thus, for example, the yarn strand last named may have 17 twists per inch which, by the detwisting action, are reduced to 5 twists per inch. However, it shall be distinctly understood that the extent of the detwisting action may be. otherwise as is suitable or desirable. As. stated, the detwisting or untwisting action occurs between the roller 23 and traveller 34 and this is substantially true when the roller 23 rotates in the direction of yarn movement. However, when the roller 23 rotates in a direction opposite to the direction of yarn movement, some detwisting may occur between the rollers 21 and 23;
As stated, the roller 23 and associated mechanism form an important part of my invention'. This roller 23, preferably, is provided witha circun'iferential groove 22 for each moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strand B and the path of any groove 22, where contact is eifected with the moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strand B should be positioned vertically above the axis of that spindle 28 controlling movement of said last named yarn strand B to thereby center the gyration of the latter. 'Ordinarily,'it is desirable that the roller 23 be placed as close'as possible to the upper end of spindle 28. However, with the construction illustrated, it is necessary that suflicient space be left forthe bobbin 33 to be either applied to or removed from said spindle 28. Moreover, the roller 23 is disposed in such position with respect to the detwisting mechanism and the roller 21 that the moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strand B remains at the bottom of its groove 22 while travelling therethrough no matter what the position of the traveller 34; in other words, when the traveller 34 has passed entirely to the right, Fig. 2, the inclination of that part of the strand being untwisted is such that contact is necessarily efi'ected with the groove 22.
As stated, the detwisting action, ordinarily, is not substantially initiated until the yarn strand has passed beyond the roller 23 'toward the detwisting mechanism. The groove 22 of said roller 23 positively guides the as sociated yarn strand along the proper predetermined path. Due to the action of the roller 18, or equivalent, the gum on any yarn strand is moist and tacky while passing through a groove 22. In fact, it is important in accordance with the form of my invention herein'disclosed that the gum on the yarn strand remain moist and tacky during the detwisting operation.
When the moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strand passes through a groove 22 of roller 23, dirt, lint or other foreign matter on said yarn strand is largely removed and such dirt, lint, or the like, in turn. is transferred to the associated groove cleaning device 26 and particularly the sleeve 27 thereof which may be periodically removed and cleaned. Due to such an arrangement, the surface defining any groove 22, and it is this surface with which the moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strand contacts, is continuously kept clean and free from any substantial amount of the gumming material or foreign matter, such as lint or dirt. Such an arrangement is desirable and very important because, otherwise, the passage, such as herein constituted by the groove '22-, sometimes becomes clogged with lint, dirt, gum or the like, and such a condition, ordinarily, would necessitate suspension of the det-wisting operation.
While my invention has been illustrated,
and described in connection with a single roller 23 having a plurality of grooves 22 with which the. respective moistened, twisted, gummed yarn strands B coact, it shall be understood that this arrangement may be otherwise as desired. Thus, for example, a plurality of rollers 23 may be provided and these rollers may have as many grooves as desired, each groove coacting with a moistened, twisted gummed yarn strand; in other words, each roller 23 may be of such length as is desired to accommodate a desired number of the mois tened, twisted, gummed yarn strands B.
As hereinbefore described, it has been specified that the twisted, gummed yarn strands B shall be fed to the moistening roller 18 from spools 12, each spool 12 having a single twisted, gummed yarn strand B wound thereon. It shall be understood, however,that, in no manner at all, is my invention to be limited to such an arrangement for supplying the twisted, gummed yarn strands B to the moisteningapparatus. Thus, each spool 12 may have a plurality of the twisted, gummed yarn strands B wound thereon. In lieu of spools, there may be utilized, pirns, cones, bobbins, cheeses, etc. having, as desired, one or more twisted, gummed yarn strands B wound thereon. Further, in lieu of devices as just specified, one or more beams may be utilized for supplying the twisted, gummed yarn strands B to the moistening roller 18, or equivalent, each beam having a plurality of the twisted, gummed yarn strands B wound thereon.
As hereinbefore described in connection with Fig. 1, it hasbeen specified that a plu rality of twisted, gummed yarn strands B wound upon amember 1 shall pass through a'coating medium, then into coacting relation 1 with a drying drum, and then be wound, respectively, upon the spools 12. It-shall be distinctly understood that my invention is not to be so limited/ For example, with the arrangement shown in Fig.1,a plurality of the twisted, gummed yarn strands B may be obtained on each of the spools 12. Further more, the spools 12 of Fig. 1 may be replaced by pirns,'con'es, bobbins, cheeses, etc. or beams, one or a plurality of the; twisted, gummed yarn strands B being wound upon said pirns,
cones, bobbins, cheeses, etc. as desired, or a plurality of said twisted, gummed yarn strands being wound upon a beam, when utilized.
When the spools 12 of Fig. 1 are utilized or when they are replaced by pirns, cones, bobbins, cheeses, etc. or beams, the twisted, gummed yarn strands B may be supplied thereto in any suitable manner different from that illustrated. Thus, the member 1, which, in effect, isa beam may be replaced by spools, pirns, cones, bobbins, cheeses, etc. and the latter may have one or more of the twisted yarn strands wound thereon as desired.
Furthermore, the twisted, gummed yarn strands B, after passing the drying drum 11, or equivalent may be wound upon beams .sec- .tionalized, if desired, and, from such Flast named beams, one or more'of saidlast named strands may be wound upon :pirns, cones, bobbins, cheeses, etc, the latter, thereafter, to be'mounted in the detwisting frame 'as illustrated diagrammatically in Fig. 2. i
It shall be distinctly understood that my invention is not to be limited to the arrangement herein shown and described. Thus, under some circumstances, the drying drum 11 of Fig. 1 may be omitted, the twisted, gummed strands B, with the gum thereon from receptacle 2, or equivalent, still moist and tacky, passing, without drying and subsequent moistening, :to the roller .22 and its respective grooves 23, and thence to the .respective detwisti-ng mechanisms.
Furthermore, where such drying drum 11, or equivalent, is utilized, the moistening operation may be effected otherwise than as illustrated in Fig. 2. Thus, for example, the twisted, gummed yarn strands B while on the respective spools 12, or equivalent as hereinbe'fore described, or afterwards, if desired, may bestea-med, sprinkled or otherwise suitably moistened.
It shall be understood that the yarnstrands or material forming them may be treated in any suitable manner to remove inc-rustations therefrom all as more particularly described and claimed in pending application Serial No. 486,072, filed October 3, 1930.
While the invention has been described with respect to certain particular preferred examples which give satisfactory results, it will be understood by those skilled in the art after understanding the invention, that various changes and-modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and .it is intended therefore in the appended claims to cover all such changes andmodifications.
\Vhat is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with mechanism for detwisting a strand of twisted, gummed yarn, the gum on said yarn being moist or tacky, of a member rotatable in the direction of and substantially at the speed of yarn movement and engaged by the yarn strand Whilelpassing toward said mechanism, said member guiding the yarn strand along a predetermined path toward said mechanism and collecting some gum from the yarn strand.
2. The combination with mechanism for detwisting a strand oftwisted, gummed yarn, thegum on said yarn being moist or tacky,
. of a roller having a peripheral groove for gut' ding the yarn along 'a predetermined path toward said mechanism, the yarn strand engaging the-surface defining said groove and depositing some gum thereon.
3. The combination with mechanism for detavisting a strand of twisted, gummed yarn, the gum on said yarn being moistzor :ta'cky, of a roller having a peripheral groove for guiding the yarn along a predetermined path toward said mechanism, the yarn strand engaging the surface defining said groove, and a cleaning member disposed in said groove.
4:. The combination with mechanism for detwisting a strandof twisted, gummed yarn, the gum on said yarn being moist or tacky, of a roller having a peripheral groove for guiding the yarn along a predetermined path toward said mechanism, the yarn strand engaging the surface defining said groove, and a pivoted cleaning member having .a section thereof biased into said groove.
5. The combination with mechanism for detwisti-n-g .a strand of twisted, gummed yarn, the gum on said yarn being moist or tacky, of a roller having a peripheral groove for guiding the yarn along a predetermined path toward said mechanism, the yarn-strand engaging the surface defining said groove, a cleaning member having a section thereof biased into said groove, and a removable sleeve on said cleaning member.
6. In combination, mechanism comprising a rotatable spindle for .detwisting a strand of twisted, ummed yarn, the gum on said yarn being moist or tacky, means for feeding the twisted, gummed yarn strand toward said mechanism, a roller along the path of yarn movement between said means and spindle and having a yarn-engaging groove posiionedsubstantially vertically above the axis of the latter, anda cleaning member .disposed in said groove.
.7. In combination, mechanismcomprising a rotatable spindle for detwisting a strand of twisted, gummed yarn, the gum on said yarn being moist or tacky, means for feeding the twisted, gummed yarn strand .toward said mechanism, a roller along the path of yarn movement between said means and spin dle, said roller being rotatable in the :direction of yarn movement and having a yarnengaging groove positioned substantially vertically above the axis ofsaid spindle, and a clean-ing member having a section biased into said groove.
8. In combination, means for mo-istening a strand of twisted, gummed yarn, means comprising a rotatable spindle for detwisting said yarn strand, means for feedingsaid yarn strand toward said detwisti-ng means, a roller between said moistening means and said spindle and having a peripheral groove positioned substantially vertically above the axis of said spindle, and a cleaning member in said groove.
9. In combination, means for moistening a strand of twisted, gummed yarn, means comprising a rotatable spindle for detwisting said yarnstrand, means for feedingsaid yarn strand toward said 'detwisting-means,
a roller between said moistening means and said spindle and having a peripheral groove positioned substantially vertically above the axis of said spindle, said roller being rotatable in the direction of yarn movement, a cleaning member having a section biased into said groove, and a detachable sleeve for said cleaning member.
10. The combination with mechanism for detwisting a strand of twisted, gummed yarn, the gum on said yarn being moist or tacky, of a roller having a peripheral groove for guiding the yarn along a predetermined path toward said mechanism, the yarn strand engaging the surface defining said groove, and a cleaning member normally disposed in said groove, said cleaning member being movable out of the groove so that the collected material may be removed therefrom.
11. The combination with mechanism for detwisting a strand of twisted, gummed yarn, the gum 011 said yarn being moist or tacky, of a roller having a peripheral groove for guiding the yarn along a predetermined path toward said mechanism, the yarn strand engaging the surface defining said groove and depositing some gum thereon, and a m0vable member engaging in the groove of said roller.
