Description

Dec. 20, 1932. .1. sHANKLlN NAIL Filed April 9. 1951 Patented Dec. 20, 1932 UNITED STATES JAMES L. SHANKLIN, 0F HOUSTON, TEXAS NAIL Application filed April 9, 1931.
This invention relates to a nail.
One object of the invention is to provide a nail formed of suitable metal and having only a restricted zone on the outer end of the head which will be subject to the magnetic influence of the driving implement. The nail may be of any desired shape, such as a brad, tack or ordinary nail.
It is common practice to form the driving head of a hammer, or other driving implement, of magnetic material so that the nail to be driven will adhere thereto, but in such case if the ordinary nail, brad or tack is used, it will not adhere to the hammer in proper driving position, but it is necessary for the workman to set the head of the nail against the driving head of the implement with the point outward. It is the obj ect of this invention to provide a nail which will, of itself, adhere to the hammer only in proper driving position.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts and use, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l shows a head end View of the nail.
Figure 2' shows a longitudinal sectional view.
Figure 3 shows a head end view of other forms of the nail, and
Figure 4 is a sectional view thereof.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 refers to the head of the nail and the numeral 2 refers to the shank which terminates in the tang 3. On the outer end of the head, preferably at the center thereof, there is a zone 4 where the metal, which is subject to magnetic influence is exposed. All of the rest of the nail is coated with a non-magnetic coating 5, whereby the nail will be unaifected by the magnetic influence of the magnetic hammer except at zone 4.
In the form shown in Figures 3 and 4, the nail is composed of a suitable metal such as brass, not subject to magnet inliuence, and in this form the head of the nail, brad or tack carries a metal plug, or insert 6 which will Serial No. 528,864.
be subject to magnetic influence of the driving hammer or other driving implement.
The drawing and description disclose what is now considered to be a preferred form of the invention by way of illustration only, while the broad principle of the invention will be defined by the appended claims.
TWhat l claim is:
l. A fastener having a. head, a shank and ak tang, said fastener having a restricted zone located centrally at the outer end of the head which is subject to magnetic influence.
2. A nail having a restricted central zone at its head end which is subject to magnetic inliuence and having a non-magnetic surface entirely covering the nail except at said zone.
3. A nail whose surface is formed with a nonmagnetic covering except at the central portion of the outer end of the head, said excepted area being subject to magnetic influence.
4. A fastener having a head, a shank and a tang, said fastener having an area at the central portion only of the head subject to greater magnetic attraction than the rest of the body of same.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JAMES L. SHANKLIN.
