One of the most valuable features, of my invention is to provide a click lock wherein a multiple of combinations may be easily made by the owner without the use of tools of any kind. I r

The padlock consists of a round cylindrical body 1, with shackle holes 2 and 3 and intermediate between these holes is the click mechanism, consisting of a plunger 4, rectangularly shaped at 5, and bevelled to a chisel point at 6, the part 5, sliding in a complementary part or slot 7, as clearly shown in Figure 5, and the spring 6a normally hold ng the plunger positioned.
The operating ring 8, is centrally and rotatably mounted upon this cylindrical body and held positioned thereon by means of the rings or collars 13 and 14, which are held in plaice by being forced upon the cylindrical The operating ring 8, knurled at 9, has an inner centrally arranged flange that is provided w'ih a inultipleof V shaped indentations or notches 10, extending entirely around the inner periphery of the ring except at 12,

Between the V shaped notches or indentations 10, are a multiple of through holes 15, into which the pins 16 and 17, are placed and the holes in wh ch these pins are located determine the number of clicks that have to be heard or felt before the locking rings 18 and 19. are moved around so as to line up the notches 20 to 23 inclusive with the shackle 24, so tha. the shackle can be removed from the 8 cylindrical body into which it fits.
It is obvious that the pins 38, 39, 50 and 51, in the locking r ngs 18 and 19, permit the movement of the locking rings inthe spaces 25 to 36 or notches in the shackle, inclusive, as shown in Figure 1, and that these locking rings that are held spaced apart from the operating ring 9, by the collars 13 and 14,,so that the locking rings 18 and 19, can be moved without having the pins 88, 89, 50 and 51, 7 com'ng in contact with the operating ring 9, and if is obvious that the locking ring cannot be moved if there s a pressure upon the shackle 24, because the points of the notches 6 in the shackle will engage with the corrugations 40 and lock the rings, thus preventing anybody from locating the notches to 23 inclus ve and that the shackle cannot be re moved until the spaces 20 to 23 inclusive are lined up and whenever one or more of the pins 38, 39, 50 and 51, are placed in other holes, a new combination is provided, also the changing of either or both of the pins 16 and 17, into other holes will provide a new combination. The po'nts of the notches above referred to may be formed by diverging the side walls of the notches in the direction of the length of the notches.
The locking ring 18 is provided with'a multiple of holes 87, adapted to hold a pin or pins 38 and 39, that are adapted to engage with a pin 17, in the operating ring 8, and when the openings 22 and 23, in the locking 1 ring 18 are not registering wth the notches in the shackle having their sides sloped inwardly, providing points in the center, of the notch, the corrugat ons 10, in the locking ring, if there is pressure brought upon the shackle in either direction, will engage with either of the points 4-1 or 42.
There are two caps 43 and 13a, that are frictionally held over the body 1, for the purpose of holding the operafing mechanism when the shackle is removed and the caps are permanently. held positioned when the shackle is in the holes 1 1, and these caps are cut out at l5 and 46, to fit over the cylindrical body 1, and guide the locking rings 18 and 1.9 in their operating positions and these caps are mounted on the body enclosing said operating rings and there are holes for the shackle in said caps. To prevent the points 41 and 12 from locking with the corrugations #10, the wire spring locking pin 47 is set into the end oi? the cylindrical body 1, and the shackle provided with recesses cooperating with the locking means in said body, for the purpose of lining up the shackle in its proper pos tion to allow the locking rings to revolve.
The locking ring 19, is provided with a multiple of holes 49, adapted to hold pins 50 and 51, engageable with the pin 16, and the cap 43 is provided with raised indicia R and to indicate either bysight or by the feeling of the thumb or fingers the direction of movement of the operating ring 8, when it is in the starting or neutral position which is when the point 6, is within the space 12, so that when R is felt or seen, the operating ring will be moved clockwise and when L is seen or felt, the operating ring will be moved counterclockwise.
To make the lining up of the parts 18 and 19 more difiicult and provide an additional combination, the band locking ring 52, cut out at 53, is provided with two inwardly formed portions 5 1 and 55, that are adapted to engage v with the pins 50 and 51.
hen the ring 52, is utilized and placed over the locking ring 19, it means that when the parts 18 and 19, are lined up, the cut out 53, of the ring 52, will also have to be lined up, thus requiring an additional movement of the operating ring 8, or an extra combination for the lock.
The number of clicks required to line up these locking rings 18, 19 and 52, when used, depends upon the relative location of the pins moving the same and it is obvious that the operating ring 8, cannot be operated if the lock ing pin is not positioned in one of the indentations 49.
In operation, the operating ring 8, is turned around until the point 6, of the plunger is in the starting space 12, whereupon the lock is ready to be opened bythe combination it is set for.
The operating ring 8, is moved to the right or left as many clicks as the combination calls for, then it is moved in the reverse direction in accordance with the next number, etc., until the proper numbers are completed, whereupon the spaces 20 to 23 will be lined up and the shackle will be released.
Having thus illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction or arrangement of parts shown, since it is evident that modifications may be made therein, without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the claims.
I claim 1. In a lock of the character described, wherein the legs of a shackle are slidably and removably mounted in ho es in a cylindrical body which is a part of said lock and formed with holes adjacent each end, means for securing the shackle to said body, comprising a revolvable operating ring mounted on said body and carrying'pins on each side engageable and cooperating with pins in looking rings mounted on said body on each side of said operating ring said locking rings having notch-es therein adapted to be positioned to unlock said shackle and a means within said body cooperating with said operating ring in providing a clicking means.
2-. In a lock, the combination of a cylindrical body having shackle receiving holes a. shackle having its legs slidably and removably mounted in the holes, said body carrying actuating means including an operating ring having pins engaging with pins in two oppositely arranged locking rings for said shackle and enclosing caps frictionally held to said body which has holes for said shackles.
3. In a lock, the comb nation of a cylindrical body with holes a shackle slidably and reinovably mounted in the holes, said shackle having grooves therein, said body carrying aclicking means comprising a plunger enga inn; with. notches in an operating ring havin adjustable p ns cooperating and engaging with other adjustable pins in two oppositely arranged notched locking rings engageable with two notches in said shackle and enclosing caps frictionally mounted on the body holding the elements together when the shackle is removed, and holes in the caps for said shackle.
, 4. In a lock, the combination of a cylindrical. body with holes receiving the legs of a shackle, slidably and removably mounted in the holes, said shackle having grooves therein, said body carrying a clicking means comprising a plunger engaging with notches in an operating ring having adjustable pins cooperating and engaging with other adjustable pins in two oppositely arranged notched locking rings engageable with the grooves in said shackle, and a band locking ring adapted to fit over one of the locking rings and enclosing caps mounted on the body, enclosing said operating rings and holes for the said shackle.
5. In a lock, the combination of a cylindrical body with holes adjacent the ends receiving a shackle having grooves therein, said body carrying a plunger cooperating with notches on an operating ring in making a click, said ring carrying projecting pins engageable with projecting pins on two oppositely arranged locking rings, one of said rings having knurls on the periphery the side walls of the grooves being diverged in the direction of the length of the grooves providing points in the grooves adapted to engage in the knurls of the ring and caps mounted on said body enclosing said operating rings and holes for the shackle in said caps.
6. In a lock, the combination of a cylindrical body with holes adjacent the ends receiving a shackle having notches in the legs thereof with the sides sloped inwardly providing points in the center of each notch, said body carrying a clicking means comprising a plunger engaging with notches in an operating ring carrying projecting pins on each side engageable with projecting pins on two oppositely arranged locking rings, one of the said rings having knurls on the periphery engageable with the points in said grooves on the legs of the shackle, the other locking ring engageable with a band locking ring and caps mounted on said body enclosing said operating rings and holes for the shackle in said caps.
7. In a lock, the combination of a cylindrical body with holes adjacent the ends receiving a shackle having notches on the inner sides of the legs thereof, said notches having their sides sloped inwardly providing points in the center of the notches, and indentations in the outer sides of the shackle legs opposite said notches, said body carrying a spring plunger cooperating with internal notches on a T-shaped in cross-section operating ring providing a clicking means, said operating ring carrying projecting pins on each side thereof engageable with projecting adjustable pins on locking rings, spaced from and positioned on each side of the operating ring, one of said rings having knurls on the periphery engageable with the points of said notches in the legs of said shackle, and enclosing caps mounted on said body with indicia thereon, frictionally holding the mechanism together when the shackle is removed, said indentations being engageable with a wire spring locking pin mounted in said body.
8. In a lock, the combination of a cylindrical body with holes spaced from the ends slidably and removably receiving a shackle, notches in said shackle with the sides, sloped inwardly providing points in the center of the notches and indentations therein opposite said notches, said body carrying a resilient plunger with its point cooperating with notches on the interior of an operating ring, T-shaped in cross section, providing a clicking means, said operating ring carrying projecting pins on each side thereof engageable with adjustable projecting pins on two oppositely arranged locking rings, one of said rings having knurls on the periphery engageable with the said points and enclosing caps mounted on the said body, with markings thereon, frictionally holding the mechanism together when the shackle is removed, said indentations being engageable with a wire spring locking pin mounted in said body.
9. In a lock, the combination with a cylindrical body with openings receiving a shackle having grooves therein, said body centrally carrying a spring clicking means and two collars centrally holding an operating ring having an adjustable pin on each side thereof engaging with adjustable pins in two oppositely arranged locking rings engageable with the grooves in said shackle and enclosing caps, mounted on said body frictionally holding the mechanism, said caps having openings for said shackles. In a lock, the combination of a cylindrical body provided with openings on the ends receiving a shackle with notches thereon, with the sides sloped inwardly providing points in the center of the notch, and registering holes therein, said body carrying a centrally arranged spring clicking means and two collars centrally holding an operating ring, having a detachable adjustable pin on each side thereof engaging with adjustable pins in two oppositely arranged locking rings having notches engageable with grooves in said shackle and enclosing caps mounted on the said body, frictionally holding the mechanism, said caps having holes for the shackle, said body carrying a wire spring locking pin engageable with holes in said shackle.
