Description

Patented Dec. 13, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE'.Y
THOMAS F. NOONAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO FRED H. BIX, OF
CHICAGO,
ILLINOIS LOCK Application led April 7,
The invention relates to locks, and has for its object to provide a lock particularly adapted for use in connection with gas meter cocks, but applicable for general use and comprising a body having an axiallymovable sliding bolt therein held in locked position by spring detent members cooperating with channels in the bolt, and means whereby a key may be inserted axially into the inner end of the bolt between the detentmembers for forcing the detent lmembers into disengaed relation to the bolt.
further object is to provide the lower end of the lock body with a key receiving aperture in registration with the slotvin the bolt and to provide a member carried by the lock body and extending through the slot for guiding said bolt axially in its movement in either direction in registration with the key receiving slot. I
A further object is to taper the inner end of the bolt so that when the bolt is forced between the detents, the detents will spread and spring into the channels in the bolt when the bolt is in inner position.
A further object is to provide the axially movable bolt with tapered portions adjacent the shoulders and forming means whereby the spring actuated detents are forced out' wardly when the bolt is forced inwardly so that the detents will be received in the annular channels of the bolt.
A further object isto slidably mount the spring actuated members in chambers at opposite sides of the bolt and in the plane of the slot in the bolt whereby a key forced axially into the bolt slot will spread the spring actuated members apart and allow axial movement of the bolt from the lock body and key.
A further object is to provide the bolt with a head adapted to engage the upper side of the valve arm and pass downwardly through an aperture in an arm carried by the valve casing for locking said valve and casing against rotation in relation toeach other. H V V.
With the above and other objects in view :the invention resides in the combination and 0 arrangement of parts as hereinafter setforth,
ceal the positions.
1932. Serial No. 603,845.
shown in the drawing, described and claimed,
it being understoodthat changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of aconventional form of plug valve, showing the device applied thereto.
Figure 2 is an end view of the valve. i
Figure 3 isa vertical longitudinal sectional view through the lock, showing the spring actuated detents in open position and the key in the lock.
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the lock, showing the same in locked position.
Figure 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the lock.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body of the lock, in the bore 2- of which the lock bolt 3 is slidably mounted for axial movement only. Bolt 3 is provided with a slot l extending inwardly from the 75 tapered lower end 5 thereof and extending transversely through said slot and the body 1 of the lock is a guide pin 6, which guides the bolt during its axial movement, and holds the same in a position where the lower end B0 of the slot 4 will register with the key aperture 7 in the lower end of the body 1, so that the key 8 will be received axially in the bolt and slotfor the unlocking operation.
Bolt 8 is provided with annular channels 9 S5 which form shoulders 10, over which thel spring actuated detents 11 spring into the channels for positively locking the bolt against axial removal from the lock body 1. Detents 11 are preferably provided with 90 heads 12, disposed in chambers 13 in opposite sides of the'lock body, and interposed between said heads and plugs 14, abutting the outer ends of the chambers 13, are expansion springs 15, which normally force the detentsv 95 11 inwardly into the path of the tapered end 5 of the bolt and the tapered portion 16 of the bolt.` Plugs 14 maybe welded or otherwise anchored in the chambers so as to con- Although two pairs of detents 11 are shown, it is to be understood the number may be varied according to the size of lock dey sired. Itis obvious in small devices a single 5 pair would be suliicient. The device is particularly adapted for use in connection with gas cocks, however it will be understood that it is applicable to general use. In Figures 1 and 2, the device: is shown on a gas cock, which comprises a valve casing 17 having a rotary plug valve 18 therein. The rotary plug valve 18 is provided with an arm 19, which registers with the arm 20 carried by the valve casing 17, said arms are provided with registering apertures 21, through which the bolt 1 extends. After the bolt l ispassed through the apertures 21, the tapered end 5 thereof is placed in the bore 2 of the lock body 1, and the body is rotated until th-e pin 6 is received in the slot 4 of the bolt; then the body 1 is forced upwardly towards the head 22 of the bolt and the tapered end. 5 is forced between the detents 11, springing the same outwardlyy against the action of the expansion 2.5 springs 15, until the detents are received in the channels 9 of the bolt above the shoulders 10. It will be noted that the key is received axially. into the end of the bolt, and the slot registers with the key slot 7 in the lock body iat all times incident to its slidable mounting on the pin 6.
From the above it will be seen that a lock is provided which is particularly adapted for use in connection with cocks, for instance of 351 the meter type, and that the bolt receives the key actuallytherein. It will alsobe seen that the device is simple in construction, positive in its operation, and constructed in a manner whereby it may be cheaply manufactured and sold The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is n 1. A lock comprising a body, a bolt slidably mounted in said body for axial movement, a guide pin carried by thebody and extending through a slot in one end of the bolt, said guide pin formingv means for maintaining the slot in registration with a -key receiving aperture in the body, spring actuated detent means carried by the body and cooperating with the bolt for holding the same within the body, said detent means being in the plane -of the slot and positioned whereby when a key is forced axially into-the slot of the bolt it will be engagedby the key and disengaged by said key from the bolt.

4;. A lock comprising a body having a bore therein,a non-rotatable axially movable bolt mounted in said bore, the portion of the bolt within the body being slotted, a key receiving aperture in the body in the plane of the bolt slot, spaced tapered shouldered members carried by the bolt, spring actuated detents carried by the body in the path of the tapered spouldered members and in the plane of the s ot.
5. A lock comprising a body member, a slotted bolt slidably mounted in the body member, spaced tapered shoulders carried by the slotted end of the bolt, a key receiving aperture in the body memberin the plane of the slot of the bolt and forming means whereby a key may be inserted axially into the slot of the bolt and between the detent means.
6. A lock comprising a body member, a .slotted bolt slidably and non-rotatably mounted in the body member, spaced shoulders carried by the bolt thereby forming channels, spring detent members carried by the bolt member in the plane of the slot of the bolt and adapted to be received in the channels and a key receiving aperture carried by the body member inthe plane of the bolt slot and adapted to receive a key.
7. In combination a lock body, a. bolt axially movable in a bore in the body, detents cooperating with said `bolt for holding the same within the body, a convoluted key way in the body axially disposed in relation to the bolt, said bolt having its end adjacent the keyway longitudinally slotted in registration with the convoluted keyway and adapted to axially receive a convoluted key when inserted through the convoluted keyway.
