HEADLIGHT LENS PROTECTOR Filed Jan. 18, 1932 2 Sheets-Sheet. 2
Inventor Homey Patented Dec. 6, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HEADLIGI-IT LENS PROTECTOR Application filed January 18, 1932.
The invention relates broadly to headlights for automobiles, and in accordance with the present invention the headlight is provided with means for protecting the lens against damage, and especially against being dam` aged by gravel and the like which is thrown into the air by an approaching automobile or other vehicles.
In accordance with the invention, the protector for the lens may be easily and quickly positioned on the headlight and will in no wise interfere with the effectiveness of the headlight.
Further, my improved headlight protector may be applied to any and all conventional headlights without requiring a material alteration in the construction of the latter.
The invention together with its numerous object-s and advantages will be definitely understood from a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein :d
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a headlight having my protector applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional elevational view through the headlight.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevational view of a portion of the protector.
With reference more in detail to the draw` ings, it will be seen that 5 designates generally a headlight casing, 6 the lens and 7 the retaining ring for the lens.
My improved protector comprises a frame 8, and the same consists of a ring preferably formed of metal and provided at one end with a flange 9 curved transversely to provide an internal channel 10. Mounted in the frame is a disk-like body 11 preferably formed of wire mesh material, and the marginal edge portion of the sheet 11 is arranged within the channel 10 and may be welded to the flange 9 or otherwise secured within said channel.
Extending inwardly from the flanged end of the frame or ring 8 is a plurality of relatively spaced spring clips 12, the same being substantially U-shape and each having one end 12a arranged within the channel 1f) and being apertured for accommodating an an- Seral No. 587,428.
choring bolt 14 which extends inwardly through an aperture in the flange 9, and at its inner end is engaged with the end 12a of the clip. A nut 13 is threadedly engaged with the inner end of the bolt. each clip is preferably shaped as shown and is adapted to engage over the flange 7 a of the lens retaining ring 7 to bear against the inner side of the flange as shown clearly in Figure 2.
In mounting the protector on the headlight, it will be seen that the outer flanged end of the retaining ring 7 is telescoped into the end of the frame or ring 8 at the unflanged or unrimmed portion of the frame 8, with the clips 12 having the ends 1Q?) thereof engaged with the flange 7 a of the lens retaining ring 7.
With the protector thus arranged on the headlight, it will be apparent that the screen material 11 will be supported in spaced 70 parallelism with respect to the lens 6, and flying pieces of gravel or the like propelled in the direction of the lens 6 will strike against the material 11 and be prevented from striking the lens 6.
The member 11 protects the entire exposed area of the lens 6, the frame 8 being arranged substantially concentric of the flanged end of the ring 7.
Even though I have herein shown 'and de- 80 scribed the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the specific details, construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein illustrated, but claim all such parts of the invention to which I am entitled, intending to restrict the invention in nowise beyond the requirements of the prior art and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a headlight lens protector comprising an annular frame provided at one end with a circular The end 12b of 55 plurality of relatively spaced attaching clips carried by said frame and having one end arranged Within said channel. y
2. In combination With a headlight casing having a lens retaining ring provided with a circular flange, an annular frame having an end telescopic'ally engaging said retaining ring, and being provided at its other end with a circular flange, a screen mounted Within said frame, clips having one end formed to engage over the iange of the reretaining ring, and bolt and nut means securing the other end of each clip to the flange on said frame.
3. In a device of the character described, a frame provided with an internal channel, aeguard arranged Within the frame and having marginal edge portions disposed Within said channel, ya plurality of attaching elements, and fastening means passing through a Wall of the channel and through said marginal edge portions of the guard, and having engagement With one end of said attaching elements for retaining said attaching elements in operative position to said frame.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
JACK ANTHONY SCARDINA.
