Description
D. B. TIFFANY.
CURTAIN FIXTURES.
No.188,985. Patented March 27,1877.
:VOZZU'ESSHS N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON u C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DAVID B. TIFFANY, OF XENIA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURTAIN-FIXTURES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. E88,,9S5, dated March '.7, 1877; application filed January 6, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,D. B. TIFFANY, of Xenia, in the county of Greene and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Fixtures; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to curtains which are capable of being raised and lowered from the top of the window and it consists in a curtain-roller mounted in brackets which are fastened to flexibly-jointed side bars sliding in vertical guides attached to the Window-frame, and held at any desired point by projecting pins entering perforations in the jointed side bars, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window with curtain and my improved fixtures attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section -through the line a; a, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the line y y, Fig. 1.
A represents an ordinary window frame. with upper and lower sash. On the front of each side railof the frameAis secured a vertical metal guide, B, extending from the top downward fora suitable distance. This guide may be made of sheet metal, with its edges turned inward, as shown in Fig. 3, to form a dovetailed groove or it may be made in any other suitable manner, to allow a bar, D,to slide therein vertically up and down. D D, at or near their upper ends, are secured To the bars suitable brackets G O, in which the curtain-roller G is mounted in any of the known and usual ways. To the lower end of each bar D is attached another bar, D, by means of a springplate, a, or its equivalent, so that the two bars virtually form one bar with a flexible joint in it. The bar D is provided with a suitable knob, E, and has also a series of perforations, b b, through it. From the window-frame on each side projects a pin, 01, which may be entered into either one of the perforations b.
It will thus be seen that the curtain-roller can be raised and lowered, and held firmly at any point desired, without in any way interfering with the rolling and unrolling of the curtain, the device for holding the curtaincord being attached to one of the bars D, as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with acurtain-roller, G, of the brackets O, the flexibly-jointed sliding bars D D, moving in guides on the windowframe, and a mechanism for holding thejointed bars at any point desired, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the vertical guides B B, the sliding bars D D, carrying the curtainroller, the perforated bars D D, flexiblyjointed to the bars D D, and the pins d d, project ing from the window-frame, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID B. TIFFANY.
