IMPROVEMENT IN TOV SHIPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 3288 983, dated March 27, 1877; application filed February 3, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE TAYLOR, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toy Ships; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification.

My said invention relates to an improvement in toy ships or miniature vessels, such as are sailed by boys and others in ponds and small lakes for amusement.

Vessels of this description have usually been provided with a lead or metal keel of considerable weight, proportioned to the quantity of sail they are made to carry, which renders it very inconvenient to carry them to and from the place where they are used. The object I as hereinafter described, by which means the vessel is ballasted with water, which may be admitted when the vessel is to be used, and removed when it is to be carried.

The accompanying drawing represents a longitudinal vertical section of the hull of a ship provided with my improvement.

A represents the hull, which may be of ordinary construction and form. B is the maindeck, constructed and applied in the usual manner. This main-deck maybe used or not as desired, as my improvement may be used independently of the same. 0 is a secondary or additional deck, which is inserted in the hull by water-tight joints, and located at a suitable height above the bottom of the vessel, to form a chamber or compartment, D, of sufficient capacity to hold the requisite quantity of water to ballast the vessel, the bulk of which water is, by means of the deck 0, kept close to the bottom of the vessel. F F are inlet and vent tubes, for introducing the water, which said tubes form sockets to receive and hold the masts, as shown in the drawing; or, if preferred, independent tubes may be used for the purpose, their upper ends extending above the main-deck, and their lower ends entering the compartment D.

It will be seen that by means of this ar rangement the heavy metal keel usually employed may be dispensed with, and the vessel may be ballasted by means of the water introduced into the compartment D; and as the water may be so introduced at the pond or other place where the vessel is to be used and may be removed at pleasure, the vessel is rendered easily portable and light, and the inconvenience attending the use of a heavy metal or other keel is entirely obviated.

What I claim as my invention is- A toy or miniature vessel, provided with a secondary or additional deck, 0, and with inlet and vent tubes F and F, which also serve as supports tor the masts, arranged in connection therewith, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
