ATTORNEY bag when used as a liner .it into a liner Patented Nov. 29, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE i FRANCIS '1. ROBINSON, 0F ROCKVILLE CENTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ARKELL SAFETY BAG COMPANY, OF NEW YORK,
N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK LINING- BAG AND METHOD OF PRODUCING THE SAME Application filed July 25,
My invention relates to a folded bag and method of producing the same and has for its object to produce a bag folded so as to have re-entrant lower corners and adapted to be used as a lining for a container, the same being in convenient form for packing, shipping and storage. It also has for its object to produce such a bag which can be ballooned into substantially the shape of the container to be lined. It also has for its object to provide a method for producing such bag. The following is a descrip bodying my invention and the method of producing the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of a bag before it is folded so as to embody my invention;
Figs. 2 and 3 show the first step of the method as applied to such bag for forming for a circular container such as a barrel;
Fig. 1 shows the second step;
Fig. 5 shows the next two steps;
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the partially folded bag shown in Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is a section on the line'77, Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 shows the next step; and
Fig. 9 shows an end elevation of the resulting bag embodying my invention;
Fig. 10 shows the first step of folding the for a rectangular container; while Fig. 11 shows the next step infolding the lining, the remaining steps being similar to those for forming the tubular container linmg.
In carrying out my improved method I use the apparatus shown and described in my Patent No. 1,508,125, dated September 9, 1924. the same consisting of a horizontal cross member 2 to which are pivoted semi-circular spreader leaves 4, means being provided as shown in said patent for moving said leaves from a somewhat vertical positon, as shown in Fig. 3, to a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 5, and vice versa.
My improved lining is of the type described and claimed in my Patent No. 1,624,626, dated April 12, 1927.
- having a side tion of a bag em- 1928. Serial No. 295,163.
In forming my lining I first form a bag seam shown in Fig; 1, the bag being preferably made of a longitudinally crinkled kraft paper or the like. I then place the bag over the former with the seam 8 above and parallel to the cross member 2. I then tuck the end portions 12 of the seam between the two leaves 4. of, the former, as shown in Fig. 4, so that these end portions are within the body of the bag and lie beneath the intermediate portion 10 of the seam 8. I then bring the leavcs 4 into horizontal position, as shownin Fig. 5, which action spreads the bottom of the bag and draws the portion 10 down toward 6 and a bottomseam 8, as p the cross member with the in turned ends of the seam and portions ad acent thereto beneath the portion 10 and portiohs adjacent thereto. Fig. 6. I then by hand pressure form a crease'around the periphery of-the leaves 4, this crease, conforming to the shape of the container to be lined. Thus, when a container is a-circular container and the former has semi-circular leaves, this crease w'n be acircular crease. I then hold the central portion 10' of the seam down in proximity member 2 and raise the members tinto approximately vertical position, thus forming a re-entrant fold in the bottom of the bag. I then lift the bag thus folded off of the former and still further collapse it so as to bring the opposing faces of the re-entrant folded portion together, as shown in Fig. 9, whereupon the bag is ready for packing for storage or shipment.
The bag thus formed has its body portion in 'alinement with the bottom seam salient, as shown at 14, and when when the .leaves are extended,
to the cross I the side walls of This is shown "in g it is grasped by one side of the mouth canbe I the article so folded as to be in form for packing for storage and shipping.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits of various modifications Without departing from the spirit 3. The method of producing a lining having a preformed bottom for a container which comprises forming a' bag tube with one end of the tube closed by a seam, tucking the ends of the seam inwardly toward the axis of the within the bag and overlie the inner sides of intermediate portions of jacent to its bottom ape' of the container to be portion is flattened.
ing a preformed bottom for a container which comprises forming a bag tube with a seam closing one end, tucking the ends of the seam inwardly toward the axis of the bag so as to lie within the bag and overlie the inner sides of intermediate portions of said seam, and preliminary to the insertion of the bag in the said bag adjacent to its bottom portion along semi-circular lines conforming to the shape of a circular container to be lined.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification this 24th day of July, 1928.
FRANCIS T. ROBINSON.
