H. R. PRIEST SHAVING BRUSH KIT Filed Aug. 1'7-. 1931 H. A?. Prassi.
Patented Nov. 29, 1932 'N UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE HARRY R. PRIEST, F LGUDONVILLE, OHIO SHAVTNG BRUSH irri` Applicationled August 17, 1931. l Serial No. 557,619.
rule preferably formed of aluminum, al- Y though other material may be used, and including a lbore which extends from end to end to receive the bristleV tuft, which latter is provided with a hard rubber or other `material base for anchoring the bristles of the tuft, which base is received in the bore `of thev .20 ferrule, the bore of the ferrule also being provided with a reduced exteriorly threaded neck for screwing the ferrule into the handle and being provided at diametrically opposite points in the threaded 4neck with set screws :f @5 which are screwed into the base, whereupon the 'ferrule andvbase may be cured as a unit and, when vulcanized, a rigid permanent assembly of the bristle tuft with the ferrule will be effected. y Y
A still further object is to. rovide a shaving brush kit which is forme of a minimum number of simple inexpensive parts and which will be neat and attractive in appearance and in which the grip or handle may be f stood on end without tipping'over, the handle also being curved outwardly above and below the medial portion thereof to comfortably fit the' operators hand when shaving. v
. With the above and other objects in view "-24,0 the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to within, the scope of '45 the appended claims Without departing from the spirit or sacricing any of the advantages .of the invention, ,Y
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, A '15.0 Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View through the shaving kit constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the grip as constituting'a magazinefor liquid soap,
. Fig. 2 is a viewl similar to Fig. 1, with the 55 ferrule shown in elevation, and with the handle forming a magazine for shaving tools and accessories, y
Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through the ferrule, Y Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of ferrule, andv Y Y Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional View through another modified form of ferrule.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, 10 designates a hollow grip or handle which is preferably cylindrical in outline, and the outer surface thereof is preferably rounded outwardly, as shown at 11 and 12above and below the medial point of the handle to comfortably fit the operators hand. The bore of the handle is imperforate so as to hold a quantity of liquid soap, as shown at- 13, or cream, if desired, without the same leaking. `The bore is thread- `ed at the open end of the handle, as shown at 14, while the opposite closed end 15 of the bore is substantially flat and is provided with a countersink 16 therein on the outer face to 80 receive a mirror 17 which may be secured in the countersink by a split ring 18 or otherwise.; The mirror may be conveniently used as a shaving mirror and, if desired, may be of the enlarging ype to minutely `view the face for inspection. Y
The-bristle tuft 19 of the shaving brush is provided with a base 2O formed of hard rubber. or other suitable material in which the bristles are firmly anchored, and, preferably, in themanufacture of the shaving kit, I employ a ferrule 21, assembled with the base before the finall curingv or vulcanizing step,
as will now bedescribed.r f A Y The ferrule 21 is provided with a substan- 95 tially cylindrical bore 22 which extends throughout the ferrule from end to end to receive the base 2O of the bristle tuft. The bore is constricted near one end to provide an inlwardly projecting annular flange 23 which 100 hooks over the base 20, as best shown in Fig. 1. The ferrule is gently rounded on the outer face, as shown at 24, from a point contiguous with said liange to a4 point substantially beyond the medial cross diameter of the ferrule, as best shown in Fig. 3. This rounded outer surface present-s no projections which might lacerate the face when shaving. Beyond the rounded portion of the ferrule, the ferrule is reduced to provide a cylindrical neck 25 which is eXteriorly threaded, as shown at 26, to engage the screw threads 14 of the handle. At the juncture of the neck 25 with the rounded portion of the ferrule, an annular shoulder neck 25 of the ferrule preferably at diametrically opposite point-s thereof so as to extend into the bore of the ferrule and, when the set screws are advanced, the tips thereo-f will be embedded in the uncured base 2O of the bristle tuft. To complete the rigid unitary assembly of the bristle tuft with the ferrule, it is simply necessary to cure or vulcanize the bristle tuft and ferrule as a unit, whereupon the set screws 28 will become firmly set in the base during the vulcanizing operation. Thus, it will be observed that, in addition to the retaining flange 23, the ferrule is provided with set screws, both of which set screws and retaining flange coact with the base 22, and are cured in contact with the base, to permanently attach the bristle tuft to the ferrule.
Should the user not desire to equip the base with the liquid soap 13, as shown in Fig. 1, the bore or magazine of the handle 11 may be used to house shaving tools, such as a safety razor 29 and handle 30 therefor, tweezers 31, a caustic stick 32, and a double suction cup 33, the latter being used, of course, to attach the grip to a window pane or any other suitable flat support so as to present the mirror in front of the shavers face when the need arises. Of course, other shavers tools and accessories may be housed in the magazine in addition to or in lieu of those enumerated.
It will be particularly pointed out that the bristle tuft in the present embodiment of the invention is secured to the handle by means of a single ferrule in lieu of the usual multitude of parts ordinarily used to secure a bristle tuft to its handle, and that, furthermore, the single ferrule is permanently bound to the bristle tuft by means of the rubber base vulcanized against the entire bore of the ferrule, against the retaining flange of the ferrue, and against both set screws of the ferru e.
As shown in Fig. 4, I may dispense with the screws and thread the neck 34 of the ferrule 35 all the way through the shoulder 36 in some instances, or may even thread the neck throughout and use the screws, as above described, instead of leaving a smooth band of Unthreaded material at the screws, as illustrated in the preferred embodiment shown in Fig. 2. The value of. threading the neck throughout is that this construction increases anchorage of the ferrule to the handle.
As shown in Fig. 5, I may thread the bore of the ferrule 37 throughout, as shown at 38, instead of leaving the bore smooth, as illustrated in Fig. 3. Obviously, by threading the ferrule throughout, the plastic material of the set will flow into the threads and, when hardened, the interfitting threads of hard rubber of the set and of metal of the ferrule will produce an extremely positive anchorage of the set in the ferrule. In this modification, I may use the screws 39, or may dispense with them entirely, if desired.
Having thus described the invention, I Y
