ECGLESIASTIC RITUAL CASE Filed March 19, 1931 2 Shets-Sheet 2 Patented Nov. 29, 1932 uNrrEn STATES FRANCIS JAMES DE JAGO, OF NIGHOLASVILLE, KENTUCKY EGGLESIASTIC RITUAL CASE Application filed March 19, 1931. Serial No. 523,821.
This invention relates to a special package or case, the same being an ecclesiastic ritual case designed to contain those articles needed by a priest of the Roman Catholic church in administering the rite of extreme unction to sick persons.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved general construction of a portable case or cabinet for the purpose described, the case being so subdivided by partitions as to make provision for holding the various necessary articles in a convenient and readily accessible manner.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement for holdin candles in such a case, the arrangement being such that the act of opening the case will place the candles in properly erect position.
A third important object of the invention is to provide, in such a case, novel means for supporting a crucifix therein.
A fourth important object of the invention is to provide novel means for securing candles therein.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the case opened;
Fig. 2 is a section through the case closed on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the case opened;
Fig. 4 is a section through the case closed on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
In the form of the invention as here illustrated, a case is disclosed having a bottom 10 from the rear edge of which rises a fixed rear wall 11, and having at each side a fixed side wall 12. Secured to the front edge of the bottom by hinges 13 is a front wall 14 which is thus arranged to fold down and form a forward extension of the bottom in one position, and to fold up between the front edges of the side walls 12 and thus to close the front of the case. The rear and front Walls are of uniform height and hinged to the top edge of the rear wall is a cover 15 which, when closed, covers the space between the side walls and rests on the rear and front walls. A suitable latch or look 16 serves to hold the cover and front walls in closed positions.
Spaced from each side wall 12 is a partition 17 extending from the rear to the front wall and of'the same height as the rear and front walls. A shelf or inner bottom 18 extends forwardly from the rear wall and abuts at its ends against the partitions 17 This shelf is spaced above the bottom 10 so that a ritual B may be placed on the bottom with its front edge portions beneath and protected from opening by the shelf 18 which also k acts to prevent displacement of the ritual as a whole. A partition 19 of suitable height rises from the front edge of the shelf 18 and its top edge lies below the plane of the top edges of the partitions 17. In the co1npartment thus formed at the rear of the case between the partitions 17 are placed a receptacle W for holy water, a second receptacle 0 for holy oil, and a quantity of cotton C. In front of the partition 19 is space for the stole S required by the priest and on top may be 8 laid the crucifix X. A slot 20 is formed at the rear of the shelf 18 for the reception of the lower limb of the crucifix when erected.
Fixed to the front wall centrally of each end compartment is a screw threaded socket 21 in which is screwed a candle 22. By this means the dropping of the front wall erects the candles. On each candle is a collar 23 carrying a guard saucer 24 having a central 6 opening for the candle wick. These guards prevent the wear from the candles running down the sides and preserve them in neat manner until burnt out.
It is intended to line the lower parts of the n case with purple material. as that color is emblematic of extreme unction, while the inside of the top will be lined with white silk and appropriately decorated, as with sheafs of wheat and grapes emblematic of the Holy Eucharist.
It is desired that it be understood that the invention may be made in various sizes and that changes may be made in the form and construction without departing from the principles thereof. It is not wished, therefore, to confine the invention to the exact form and proportions here shown, but it is wished to include all such as come within the scope claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A case of the kind described having a bottom, a front wall hinged at its lower edge to the front edge of the bottom, candle sockets fixed tothe inner face of said front wall to move automatically into erect position as said wall is folded downwardly, a rear wall, partitions extending between the rear and front walls and dividing the case into a central compartment and end compartments, said candle sockets being positioned in said end compartments, and a shelf in the central compartment extending from the back wall and spaced from the bottom to provide for holding the edge portion of a ritual between said shelf and bottom.
2. A case of the kind described having a bottom, a front wall hinged at its lower edge to the front edge of the bottom, candle sockets fixed to the inner face of said front wall to move automatically into erect positon as said wall is folded downwardly, a rear wall, partitions extending between the rear and front walls and dividing the case into a central compartment and end compartments, said candle sockets being positioned in said end compartments, and a shelf in the central co-mpartment extending from the back wall and spaced from the bottom to provide for holding the edge portion of a ritual between said shelf and bottom, said shelf having a socket slot at its rear central portion to receive the lower limb of a crucifix.
3. A case of the kind described having a bottom, a front Wall hinged at its lower edge to the front edge of the bottom, candle sockets fixed to the inner face of said front wall to move automatically into erect position as said wall is folded downwardly, arear wall, partitions extending between the rear and front walls and dividing the case into a central compartment and end compartments, said candle sockets being positioned in said end compartments, a shelf in the central compartment extending from the back wall and spaced from the bottom to provide for holding the edge portion of a ritual between said shelf and bottom, said shelf having a socket slot at its rear central portion to receive the lower limb of a crucifix, and an upstanding partition at the forward edge of the shelf providing a compartment at the rear for holy water, holy oil and cotton.
4. A case of the kind described having a bottom, a front wall hinged at its lower edge to the front edge of the bottom, candle sockets fixed to the inner face of said front wall to move automatically into erect position as said wall is folded downwardly, a rear wall, partitions extending between the rear and front walls and dividing the case into a central compartment and end compartments, said candle sockets being positioned in said end compartments, a shelf in the central compartment extending from the back wall and spaced from the bottom to provide for holding the edge portion of a ritual between said shelf and bottom, and an upstanding partition at the forward edge of the shelf providing a compartment at the rear for holy water, holy oil and cotton.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
