Description
A. H. FOSTER.
CURTAIN-FIXTURES.
No. 188,883. Patengea March 27,1877.
` MIZESSES HEMI/755m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARCHIBALD H. FOSTER, OF MUNCIE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURTAIN-FIXTU RES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,883, dated March 27, 1877; application led February 8, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD H. Fos- TER, of Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain- Fixtures; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference 'being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The natlvire of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a curtainfixture, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a'front elevation of a window with my inventionattached, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are details-of my invention.
A represents an ordinary window-frame, at the top of which uare fastened two brackets, B B. These brackets are constructed as shown, each forming a semicircular guide, b, open at the bottom, and above said guide is mounted a pulley, a.
C represents the curtain-roller, provided at one end with a cap, D, with a pulley, E, on its outer side, and on the end of this pulley is a headed journal, d,
On the other end of the roller C is a similar cap, D', provided with a headed journal, d', projecting therefrom. These journals d d' are placed in hangers G Gr, which are suspended by means of cords e e passing up through the brackets B B and over the pulleys a a, with the ends of the cords attached to an adjustable fastening constructed in the following manner:
H is an arm or lever, provided at its end with the jaw F, through which passes a stationary cord, h, which is at the top fastened to the bracket B, and at the bottom to a small bracket, I, secured to the window-frame.
Between the sides f f of the jaw F is pivoted a jaw, J, having an arm, K, which is forced outward from the arm EI by a spiral spring, c', so that the jaw J will grasp and hold the stationary cord h. By means of this fastening the curtain-roller can be held at any height desired, and is lowered from the top, so that if desired the upper sash can be lowered and ventilation secured without obstruction.
On the outer end of the pulley E is secured or formed a ratchet-wheel, m, into which engages a pawl, L, pivoted to an ear projecting from the back of the hanger G on that side. The lower end of the pawl L is curved forward, and has a hole through its end for the passage of the hoisting-cord n, which is attached to and wound around the pulley E.
The pawl L, of its own gravity, engages with the ratchet-wheel m to hold the curtain more or less rolled up on the roller; and by the manipulation of the cord n the pawl is released, so as to roll up or unroll the curtain as required.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a curtain-roller provided with headed journals d d', of the hangers G G, the brackets B B, formed with the guides b b, andprovided with the pulleys a a, and the cords e e, carrying a griping or fastening device, operating on a stationary cord, h, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the arm H with jaw F, the pivoted jaw J with arm K, and the spring i, all constructed as described, and operating in connection with the stationary cord h, and the hoisting-cords e e, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARCHIBALD H. FOSTER.
