The invention is illustrated as supported on a suitable bed 28 provided with suitable legs. Projecting upwardly from the bed are standards 29 and 30. A bracket 31 is socured to the standard 29 at its upper end and projected upwardly therefrom and provided ported portion 34, a journal 68' being formed at the outer end of the bracket 33. Journaled in the supports 34 and 32 are shafts 35 and 36. Journaled in these supports are also the shafts 37 and 38, 35 and 36, and the shafts 36 and 38 being connected intermediate their ends by the braces 39. Journaled in these supports 32 and 34 is the shaft 40 on which is fixedly mounted the pinion 41 meshing with the pinion 42 which is mounted on the stub shaft 43. A pinion 44 is mounted on the outer end of the shaft 45 and meshes with the gear 42 as does likewise the gear41 (seel ig. 1 and Ti 2). The shaft 45 is also ournaled in t e supports 32 and 33 and extends parallel to the shaft 40. The shafts 35 and 37 and the shafts 36 and 38 serve as stayrods, and the shafts 35 and 37 are connected to the shaft 40 by means of the-brace 46 and a similar brace serves to connect the shafts 36 and 38 and 45. Mounted on the shafts 40 and 45st spaced intervals are feed rollers 47, the rollers on the shaft 45 being in registration with the rollers on the shalt 49- Guide plates 49 and 50 are extended vertically and through these guide plates extend the shafts 37 and 38, 40 and 45, 35 and 36. (See Fig. 1, Fig. 3, and Fig. 15.) The guide plates 49 and 50 are positioned opposite each other, and spaced apart to provide a tortuous space 52 the twisting of the space being determined by the outline of the plates themselves. These plates serve as shopper,
or a support for strips of wire which are placed thereon and the wire 18 permittedto pass down into the space or passage 52 which I has the angularly turned discharge portion 53 from which the wire 56 is prevented from passing by means of the plunger 54 which is normally held by the spring in. outwardly pressed position to engage the strip of wire 56. The shafts 35, 36, '37 and 38 extend through end plates 57 and 58. These end plates extend downwardly for a portion of the distance of the plates 49 and 56. Positioned below and in alignment with the plates 57 and 58 are the lower end plates 59 and 60 which have the beveled inner faces so as to direct the wire strips inwardly andcause their longitudinal-movement to the proper tered relatively to the forming mechanism while being led from the passage 53 to the forming mechanism. The construction is so arranged that as the shaft 61 is rotated these feeding arms will move into the full line position shown in Fig. 15 and upon continued aeeaeoa rotation move dowardly into thedot line position shown in Fig.
The shaft 61 is provided exterior of the supporting member 34 with a sprocket wheel 64 adapted to rotate therewith. This sprock et wheel 64 is connected by the chain belt 65 to a sprocket wheel 66 fixedly mounted on the shaft 67 which is journaled on the support or standard 30 and also in the journal 68 secured to and projecting outwardly from the shaft 67 is the eccentric arm 69 connected I by the pitnian 70 to the rocker l 71 which is fixedly mounted on the shaft 43. Fixedly mounted on the shaft 67 is the pinion 72 meshing with the gear 73 which is fixedly mounted on the shaft 74. Fixedly mounted on the shaft 74 intermediate the standards 29 and 30 are the drum forming discs 75 and The gear 73 76 (see Fig. 1 and Fig. 2). meshes with the gear 77 mounted on the shaft 78 on which, forcontrolling the rotation of the gear 77, is mounted a clutch 79 operated by the lever 80. A gear 81 meshes with a gear 82 mounted on the shaft 83. A pulley 84 mounted on the shaft 83 is connected by the belt 85 to the pulley 86 which is mounted on the shaft 87 of the electric motor 88. The construction is such that upon an operation of the motor 88 .the various gears will he set into rotation and the shafts 40 and 45 rocked through the oscillating action of the pitman 70. These shafts 40 and 45 are rocked in opposite directions as a single gear 42 serves to actuate them. In this way the rollers l7 serve to separate and feed individually, the strips of wire-into the space or passage 52. At the same time that the oscillation olthe rollers 47 is efiected, the gear 73 is rotated so as to rotate the disc 75 and 76., At the same'time also the shaft 6i is rotated so that theileeder arm 62, during each revolution of the shaft 61 will feed from the discharge portion 530i the space one off the strips of wire. In the embodiment of the invention which l have shown 1 have illustrated four sets of forming mechanism carried by and rotating with the drum forming discs 75 and 76. The gearing to the shaft 61 is such that the shaft will rotate four times during each revolution of the shaft 74.
Each of the forming mechanisms is mounted on a bed or plate 89 which is mounted on the discs 75 and 76. Mounted on the upper surface of each of these beds or plates 89 are blocks 90 and 91 in each olwhich is formed,
a slot 92 into which the wire strip is delivered by the feeding arms 62, the wire strip passing from the feeding arm 62 into this slot 92. A forming nose 93 is formed on each of the blocks 91 and on the upper face of the blocks a recess'94 is provided in which is positioned a roller or forming stud 95. The portion of the wire which is engaged between the forming noses 93 on each of the plates 06 of the garment han er therein.
or beds may be termed the base of the garment hanger to be formed. As shown in 1g. 6 there is inwardly offset a portion of this base 96. Extended and 91 is a shaft 97 (see Fig. provided with a head 98 cut away to provi e the separated quadrants 100 and 101 (see Flg. 6). These quadrants being separated by forming each other by a space sulficient for the base Before the forming operation, t at is, when the wire is being fed from the feeding arm 82 the space is in alignment with the slot 92 which forms a continuation thereof. Fixedly mounted on the bottom of each of the shafts or plush? is a segment 102 (see Fig. 4 and Fig. 5). On the pin or shaft 0?" which corresponds to the pin or shaft 07 is a segment 103. Meshing with the segment 102 s a rack bar 104% which is connected to the rod105 this rack bar being slidahly mounted and riding in a guide 106 mounted on the under surrace or? the plate,89. The end of the rack bar is guided in its movements by engaging in a channel 108 formed in the guide hracket 107. A roller 109 is mounted on the outer end of the rack bar 1 and serves to engage the face of the cam 110 which projects inwardly from the face of the standard 30. The reel; bar 10 1 enga es the segment 102 at one side and at the side opposite to which the segment 103 is engaged in meshed relation by the rack bar 112 which is also attached to the rod and which rides in the guide 111 secured to the under side of the plate 88-. The construction is such that in the forming operation after the wire has been fed to the slot 92, the roller 109 will ride upwardly on the cam and the heads 08 twisted into the position shown in Fig. 6 so as to provide the inward ofiset of the base 96 intermediate its.
ends. it bending arm 113 from the upper surface of the upper end of which pr01ects a stud 114 is fixedly mounted on the shaft 115 on which is fixedly mounted the bevel gear 116 meshing with the bevel gear 117 fixedly mounted on the shaft 118. This shaft 118 is provided on its upper end with asquare portion provided with flat faces 188 adapted in certain positions of movement of the discs 75 and 76 to engage the fiat guide strip 189 which is mounted on the inner surface of the standard 30. This guide strip, commences where the segment strip 190 ends; the construction being such that at the position of rotation of the discs 75 and 76 at which the gear 192 will mesh with the segment strip 190, the shaft 118 will be rotated and when the flat 188 of the shaft 118 is in'engagement with the strip 189 arotation of the shaft 118 will be prevented. Mounted (see Fig. 4 and Fig. 5) on the shaft 118 is a bevel gear 119 meshing with a gear 120 fixedly mounted on the shaft or pin 121 on which is fixedly mounted the bending arm 122 projected upthrou 'h the blocks 90 wardl from the upper surface of the outer off the strip 189 and the gear 192 will enga go the segment stri 190 causing a rotation of the shaft 118 an an inward swingin of the bending arms 122 and 113 from the Full line positionshown in Fig. 1 to the full line position shown in Fig. 7, Fig. 6 illustrating various positions of these bending arms. The ends of the wire strip are thus brought around the forming noses 93 to give to this structure the desired outline and shape at the ends of the base 96.
Mounted on the plate 89 is the l..-shaped plate 125' (see Fig. 1 and Fig. 141), this IL-shaped plate or block being mounted on the projection 12% which extends upward ly from the upper surface of the plate or bed 80 (see Fig. 13). The plate 125 is mounted to provide a space 126 into which one of the ends of the wire is forced by the bending arms 122 and 113 so that this wire end engages the head 127 on the pin 128. 'llhe'other end of the wire will engage the collar 129 formed on the pin 130 which is slidably mounted. A recess 129' is formed in the inner face of the plate 125 to actuate the collar/120. ltotatably mounted on the pin 130 is a bending wheel 131 which is in spaced relation to the bend wheel 132 which is rotatably mounted on the shaft 133. These bending wheels have each peripheral grooves 135 and 136 and are held in alignment in their axial movement by the yoke 134 which engages in the peripheral grooves of these wheels. Fixedly mounted on the lower end .of the shaft 133 is a segment 14A (see Fig. 4

; Fig. 10). F ixedly mounted on the shaft "159 is a gear 160 positioned within the gear housing 161.. Meshing with the gear 160 is aitwisting mechanism in the form of a gear 162 which is provided with the central or hub portion 163 having the narrow slot 164 radiating outwardly. The lower portion of this slot 164: is widened. A shaft 165 (see Fig. 8 and Fig. 1) is provided intermediate its ends with the block 156 hav ing teeth formed on one side to provide a rack bar adapted'to mesh with the rollers 167 mounted in spaced relation on the gear box 161. A. roller 169 is mounted on the block 166 and adapted to engage the arm 170 which is rotatably mounted by the pin 172 on the support 171 which projects from the bracket 154. A roller 165' is mounted on the end of of the gear 162 and twist the wire as it is shown twisted in Fig. 8. At the same time the roclring of the member 170 will efiect a" ingof the arm 173 which is pivotally mounted on the pin 172 (see Fig. 8 and Fig. This rocking of the arm 17 3 being effected by the engagement of the roller 169 with theinclined surface 17 0 of the bar 170. Projecting inwardly from the arm 173 is a trunnion 174 and a similar trunnion 175 projects inwardl from the arm 170 (see Fig. 10 and Fig. lll so as toengage between the collars" 177 and 176 fixedly mounted on the shaft 178. Upon this rocking movement the shaft 178 ismoved axially and the gear 179 which is non-rotatably mounted on the shaft 178 will be in engagement with the rack bar 184 which is attached to the rod 183which is pivotally connected to the extension 185 and rides in the guide bracket 186 and which is provided on its outer end with a rpller 187 adapted'to engage the cam 187'. Carried by the shaft 178 is the forming plate 180 projecting outwardly of which is the forming disc 181 in spaced relation'to the forming stud 182. Upon the. axial movement of the shaft 17 8,,the extended end of the wire will engage between the stud 182 and the former- 181 and upon axial movement of the rod 183 this former will be rotated to form a hook 283 of the garment hanger.
- All of the forming mechanisms which are mounted on the rotatable discs are similarly formed and similarly operated so that a It will be noted that the forming mechanism is rotated as this is the most compact form of construction but it is believed obvious that horizontally or vertically positioned cams arranged in successive order co-operating with a movable forming mechanism might be employed with equal efiect.
