This invention relates to machines for forming loops on coiled springs, and in which' a portion of each end coil of the spring' is bent into right-angle relation to the body portion of the spring toprovide an attaching hook or loop for the same.
An example of such machine is the subject matter of Letters Patent No. 971,238, dated September 27, 1910, to Charles R. Barrett. And; the present improvement has for its object to provide a simple and automatically operating mechanism by which sections of coiled springs are fed to a pair of alternately operating loop-forming appliances adapted to bend the respective end coils of the section of spring operated on, into attaching, hooks or loops.
A further ob ect 1s to provide means for automatically turning the section of spring, and to attain a correct positioning of the end coils of, the same with relation to the loop-forming appliances, and thus insure the formation of loops or hooks on said sec-' tion of coiled spring in an effective and perfeet manner,. all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

s In the operation'of such parts, a section of coiled spring normally rests against the stop finger 20, while the next ad acent section of coiled spring is yieldingly held by the spring finger 19. With a forward travel '20 of the parts along with the automatically actuated slide 9, the stop finger 20 moves from beneath its section of coiled spring, and permits-the same to slide down against a lateral stop plate 21 carried by the slide 9,
aforesaid, and onto theinitial feeding mechanism hereinafter described. During such forward travel of the parts, the spring finger19maintains yielding holdingengagement with its section of coiled spring, to prevent any downward movement of the same.
With a succeeding rearward movement of the aforesaid parts, the stop finger 20 moves into the path of the sections of coiled springs in the chute 17 and the spring finger 19 95 moves out of engagement with its section of coiled spring, allowing the same to slide down upon the stop finger 20, for a repetition of the cycle of operations just described 22 is a longitudinally disposed carrier pivoted at its forward end in the slide 9 tion during the main portion of the rearward travel of said carrier 22. In the present construction the rear portion of the aforesaid recess in the slide 9, is cut away at J 24:, to permit a downward pivotal movement of the carrier 22, as the section of coiled spring is taken from said carrier by the hereinafter described forward pair or holding jaws of the loop-forming appliances. 25 is a spring tending to yieldingly maintain the carrier 22 in its normally horizontal position.

27 is an anvil or projection extending rearwardly from the pedestal 8, and having a horizontal face upon which the sections of coiled springs move rearwardly and are held during the loop-forming operations hereinafter described; l
28 and 29 are abutment lugs located at opposite sides of the anvil 27, and disposed in longitudinal spaced relation to each other, so as to be in operative and individual relation to the pair of loop-forming heads and accessories hereinafter described. The abutment lugs 28, 29 are adapted to form stops for the adjacent ends of the sections of coiled springs, while the same are circularly positioned, and while theend coils of said sections are bent at right-angles to the main portions of said sections, as hereinafter more fully described.
30 is the movable upper jawof the first pair of. holding jaws of the present construction. Said jaw 30 is attached to a vertically sliding head 31, which has movement in a suitable guide opening in the longitudinally sliding head 7 heretofore described. The vertically sliding head31 is common to the said upper jaw 30 of the first pair of holding jaws, and to a counterpart movable upper jaw of the second pair of holding aws, hereinafter described. And the connection of said jaws to the sliding head 31 is preferably of an adjustable nature and.

pair of holdingjaws of the present construction. Said jaw 37 is a counterpart of piece construction and in detail comprise I a main body portion 38, formed with a series of upwardly extending bars or teeth 39,
preferably three in number as shown, and
pressing said jaws after the same are raised by the cam disk 40, aforesaid.
, In the present construction, the countershafts 4 and 6, before described, receive simultaneous rotation from the primary driving shaft 3, through pinions 43 and 44 on said shaft 3, which pinions mesh with and impart motion to gear wheels 45 and 46 on the respective countershafts 4 and 6, as shown .in Fig. 2.
47 and 48 are. a pair of loop-forming heads disposed in spaced lateral and longitudinal relation to each other, so as to be individual to the respective first and second pairs of holding jaws 30, 37 and 38, heretofore described. Said loop-forming heads comprise main body portionsor hubs 47, 48, and radial bending jaws 49, 50, which are adapted to revolve in circular paths. The
. function and operation of the bending jaws 49, 50 is similar to that of the bending jaw of the aforesaid Barrett Patent No. 971,238, and as in said patented construction, said bending jaws are adapted to engage the outer coils of the section of coiled spring operated on, and bend said end coils at right-angles to the body of the coiled spring, to provide attaching loops or hooks at the respective ends of said coiled spring section.
51 and 52 are the carrying shafts of the loop-forming heads 47, 48, aforesaid. Said shafts are journaled in the lower ends of pairs of vertical bracket plates 53, 54, secured at their upper ends to the standard 5, in a laterally adjustable manner, by bolts and elongated slots, as illustrated more particularly in Fig. 3.

by means of which rotation in opposite direction is transmitted from the countershaft 4,:to the carrying shafts 51 and 52 of the loop forming heads .47, 48 above described.
The pair of spring positioning mandrels 12 and 13 heretofore referred to, are disposed in spaced longitudinal relation to each other, so as to have individual operative relation to one another of the pairs of holding jaws 30, 37 and 38, and loop-forming heads 47 48 aforesaid, and in the present improvement have a detail construction as follows 57 is a sleeve having sliding movement on a reduced inner end of the positioning mandrel 12 and held from independent rotation thereon by a pin 58, and elongated slot 59, as illustrated more particularly in Figs. 7 and 8. The inner and free end of said sleeve 57 is adapted to engage in the bore of the section of coiled spring operated on, and with a view to attain proper. frictional engagement of the parts, said inner end of the sleeve 57 will be of the conical form shown in Figs. 7 and 8. 60 is a spring tending to yieldingly force the sleeve 57 into the above described frictional engagement with the section .of coiled spring operated on, and so that in the norand rotation of the positioning mandrel 12,
the said sleeve 57 Wlll cause a partial rotation of the spring section operated on, until the extreme end of an outer coil of said spring section is brought against an edge of the abutment ing 28, which prevents further rotation of the spring section, and insures its proper position for the subsequent loopforming operation of the loop-forming head 47-49, aforesaid. 61 is a head or sleeve having sliding movement on a reduced inner end of the positioning mandrel 13. Said sleeve 61 is held on said mandrel by a transverse pin 62, intersecting an elongated peripheral groove 63, in the mandrel, as
shown in Fig. 10, the construction being adapted to permit of an independent rotation of the sleeve, as well as a limited longitudinal movement of the same. 64 are friction serrations formed in the face of an enlarged rear portion of the sleeve 61, which are adapted for frictional engagementwith spring friction studs or plugs 65, carried by the mandrel 13, as shown on Figs. 10 and 11. Such construction is adapted to permit a continued and independent rotation of the mandrel 13, when in the operation of the mechanism, the sleeve 61 is forcibly held from rotation. 66 is a ratchet formation on the front and free end of the sleeve 61, and adapted to engage the loop or hook of the section of coiled spring operated on, and as illustrated in Fig. 10. With the described construction, the normal rotation of the positioning mandrel 13 is adapted to impart a partial rotation to the section of coiled sprin operated on, and until the extreme end 0 the outer coil at the other end of said section of coiled spring is brought against an edge of the abutment lug 29, which in turn prevents any further rotation of said spring section and insures its proper position for the subsequent and final loop or hon: forming operation of the loop-form- 'ing head 4850, aforesaid. 67 is a bevel gear carried by the countershaft 4, and having operative engagement with bevel gears 68, 69, on the inner ends of the transverse cam shafts 15 and 16, heretofore described. 70, 71 are gear wheels carried on the outer grooves of which have operative engagement with cam studs '76, 77 on the reciprocating headstocks 11 of the positioning mandrels 12 and 13, to impart limited intermittent reciprocation to the same.
The operation of the present machine is as follows: Sections of coiled springs of the required length are serially released from the feeding chute 17, by the intermittent operation of the spring and stop fingers 19 and 20, as heretoforefdescribed in detail. The section of coiled spring as released, descends against the lateral stop plate 21, and is received by the concave rear end of the carrier 22, and in the rearward reciprocation of the carrier is carried back into osition beneath the upper movable jaw 30 o the first pair of holding jaws, and is in turn engaged and held thereby. Immediately previous to such engagement, the first positioning mandrel 12 reciprocates transversely to bring its sleeve 57 into frictional engagement Wlth the section of coiled spring, to cause a partial rotation of the same and attain the required positioning, as heretofore set forth in dethetail. 7 Immediately following such positioning of the section of coiled spring, the afore said first pair of holding jaws come into holding engagement with said section of coiled spring, and following such holding eng ement, the radial bending jaw 49 of st loop-forming head 47, engages an outer coil at the other end of said section of coiled spring, and bends the same overthe abutment lug 28, into right-angle relatlon, and provides the required sprmg-attaching loop or hook, as heretofore set forth in the description of the mechanism. The upper holding jaw 30 of the first pair of holding jaws, through the rearward movement of the reciprocating carrying head 7 then moves said section of coiled spr1ng backward along the anvil 27, and leaves said section of springin the engaging zone of the second pair of holding aws 37-39. A mechanism for forming loops on sections of coiled springs, comprising a feeding chute, a longitudinally reciprocating carrier, an anvil disposed to the rear of said carrier and provided with a lateral abutment, a rotary looper head arranged above said anvil, .a pair of vertically movin holding jaws associated with said anvil, and a .sections of coiled springs, comprising a feeding chute, a longitudinally reciprocating carrier, a spring linger and a stop finger associated with said chute in spaced relation and moving witlrsaid carrier, an anvil disposed to the rear of said carrier and provided with a lateral abutment, a looper head arranged above said anvil, a pair of vertically moving holding jaws associated with said anvil, and means for operating the carrier, looper head and holding jaws in' unison, substantially as set forth.
11. A mechanism for forming loops on sections of coiled springs, comprising a feeding chute, a longitudinally reciprocating carrier, an anvil disposed to the rear of said carrier and provided with a lateral abutment, a rotary looper head arranged above said anvil, a positioning means ada ted to-impart partial rotation to the section of spring operated 011,..a pair of vertically moving holding jaws associated with said anvil, and means for operating the carrier, looper head, positioning means and holding jaws in unison, substantially as set forth.
12. A mechanism for forming loops ,on sections of coiled springs, comprising a feeding chute, a longitudinally reciprocating carrier, an anvil disposed to the rear of said carrier and provided with a lateral abutment, a rotary looper head arranged above said anvil, a laterally disposed positioning means adapted for operative engagement with an end of the section of spring operated on and adapted to impart partial rotation thereto, a pair of vertically moving ,holding jaws associated with said anvil, and
means for operating the carrier, looperhead, positioning means and holding jaws in amson, substantially as set forth.
13. A mechanism for forming loops on sections of coiled sprin s, comprising a feeding chute, a longitu inally reciprocating carrier, an anvil disposed to the rear of said carrier and provided with a lateral abutment, a rotary looper head arranged above said anvil, and means for operating the carrier and looper head in unison, arranged above said anvil, a laterally disposed positioning means adapted for operative engagement with an end of the section of spring operated on and adapted to impart partial rotation thereto,a pair of vertically moving holding jaws associated with said anvil, and means for operating the carrier, looper head, positioning means and holding jaws in unison, substantially as set forth.

A mechanism for forming loops on sections of coiled springs, comprising a feeding chute, a longitudinally reciprocating carrier, a spfiing finger and a stop finger associated wi' said chute in spaced relation and moving'with said carrier, an anvil disposed to the rear of said carrier and provided with lateral abutment lugs, a pair of loop-forming heads arranged above said anvil and disposed one in advance of the other, and means for operating the carrier and looper heads in unison, substantially as set forth.
25.'A mechanism for forming loops on sections of coiled springs, comprising a feeding chute, a longitudinally reciprocating carrier, an anvil disposed to the rear of said carrier and provided with lateral abutment lugs, a pair of positioning means adapted to impart partial rotation to the sections of springs operated on, a pair of loop-forming heads arranged above said anvil and disposed one in advance of the other, and means for operating the carrier, looper heads and positioning means in unison, substantially as set forth.

A mechanism for forming loops on sections of coiled springs, comprising a feeding chute, a longitudinally reciprocating carrier, an anvil disposed to the rear of said carrier and provided with lateral abutment lugs, a pair of longitudinally disposed positioning means adapted for operative engagement with ends of the sections of springs operated on to impart partial rota.- tion thereto, a pair of loop-forming heads arranged above said anvil and disposed one in advance of the other, and means for operating the carrier, looper heads and positioning means in unison, substantially as set forth.

A mechanism for forming loops on sections of coiled sprin ,comprisingea feeding chute, a longitu inally reciprocating carrier, a spring finger and a stop finger associated with said chute in spaced relation and movingwith said carrier, an anvil disposed to the rear of said carrier and provided with lateral abutment lugs, a pair of positioning means adapted to impart partial rotation to the sections of springs operated on, a pair of loop-forming heads arranged above said anvil and disposed one in advance of the other, and means for operating the carrier, looper heads and positioning means in unison, substantially as set forth.

A mechanism for forming loops on sections of coiled springs, comprising a feeding chute, a longitudinally reciprocating carrier, a spring finger and a stop finger associated with said chute in spaced relation and moving with said carrier, an anvil disposed to the rear of said carrier and provided with lateral abutment lugs, a pair of laterally disposed positioning means adapted for operative engagement with the ends of sections of springs operated on to impart partial rotation thereto, a pair of loop-forming heads arranged above said anvil and disposed one in advance of the other, and means for operating the carrier, looper heads and positioning means in unlson, subv stantially as set forth.

Amechanism for forming loops on sections of coiled springs, comprising a feeding chute, a longitudinally reciprocating carrier, an anvil disposed to the rear of said carrier and provided with lateral abutment lugs, a pair of loop-forming heads arranged above said anvil and dis osed one in advance of the other, a pair 0 laterally disposed positioning means comprising revoluble and laterally reciprocating mandrels and sleeves on the ends of said mandrels for operative engagement with the ends of the sections of springs operated on and adapted-to impart partial rotations thereto, and means for operating the carrier, looper heads and positioning means in unison, substantially as set forth.

A mechanism for forming loops on Isections of coiled springs, comprising a feeding chute, a lon itudinally reciprocating carrier, a sprin" finger and a stop finger associated with said chute in spaced relation and moving with said carrier, an anvil disposed to the rear of said carrier and provided with lateral abutment lugs, a pair of loop-forming heads arranged above said anvil and disposed one in advance of the other,
a pair of laterally disposed positioning means comprising revoluble and laterally reciprocating mandrels and sleeves on the ends of said mandrels for operative engagementwith the ends of sections of springs operated on and ada ted to impart partial rotation thereto, an means for operating the carrier, looper heads and positioning means in unison, substantially as set forth.

A mechanism for forming loops on sections, of coiled springs, comprisingafeeding chute, a longitudinally reciprocating carrier, an anvil'disposed to'the rear of said carrier and provided with lateral abutment lugs, a pair of loop-forming heads arranged above said-anvil and disposed one in advance of the other, a pair of vertically moving holding jaws associated with said anvil, and means for operatingthe carrier,looper heads and holding jaws in unison, substantially as set forth.

A mechanism for forming loops on sections of coiled springs, comprising a feedsaid carrier and provided with lateral ahutthe other, a pair of vertically moving chute, a longitudinally reciprocating carrier, a spring finger and a stop finger as sociated with said chute in spaced relation andmoving with said carrier, an anvil disposed to the-rear of said carrier and provided with lateral abutment lugs, a pair 0t loop-forming heads arranged ahove'said .anvil and disposed one in advance of the other, a pair of vertically moving holding jaws associated with said anvil, and means or operating the'car'rier, looper heads. and hol ing jaws in unison, substantially as set forth.
