NozzLE'TIr AND smmnemg tbeonrwes r Application filed December 14,1931; no. s1,o15.
This invention relates to steam locomotives and has for its object the provision of an attachment for theconventionaltype of steam;
above set forth in which means of an adjustable nature is provided tothe end that the device may be attached to locomotives of different types providing steam exhaust of different conditions.
A still further object of this invention is to provide an exhaust steam nozzle attachment for the purpose before set out that is simple in constructiomeasily and quickly attachable and can be manufactured at the minimum cost. i
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the 2 front end of a conventional steam locomotive with the exhaust nozzle of this invention shown in elevation;
Figure 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a .view in perspective of the improved attachment Without the nozzle engaging collar;
Figure 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring to the parts by reference numerals wherein like parts are designated by the like numerals in the several views, 10 designates a nozzble tip that is adapted to be threaded on the upper end of the exhaust I nozzle 11. The steam spreading means consists of a plate 12 having fixed thereto sup- V porting arms 13 that have their lower ends in detachable connection 'with the nozzle tip 10 by the means 14:. Passing through through the plate 12 and in threaded connection therewith is a threaded pipe or conduit 15 which in turn has the lowermost portion thereof in threaded engagement with the conical spreader 16. To retain the con- 5 duit 15 in proper adjustment in the spreader Another object of this invention resides in I the provision of a device of the character 16, a; nut 17 is thr'eadedon the conduit and moved into'engagem'ent withthe upper 'f face of thespreader 16. f A jam nut'18is pro- 3 vided to retain the/conduit in its' proper: ad+ justed: position by ofthelnut 18 againsttheyplatelfi Afterrtheconduit is; properly threaded in V the spreader 16 and the spreader is locked in its. proper position relative tothe top of the exhaust jet by meansiofthe threadeden'gage ment oftheconduit with the plate, 12 and the engagement of the j am nut 18 with the plate, bracing bolts 19' that are threaded through the plate 12 ;are adjusted so as to'en'gage the upper face of the spreader16. This means is provided to strengthen the assembly sothat the chance of the spreader '16being moved by the blasts of exhaus t steam against the same willsbe reduced to a minimum;
In operation thenozzletip 10 is made fast to the top iof th'e exhaust jet 11 and thearms 1? secured to thetcollar by the means 14; The spreader: 16 is then adjusted to the proper position relative to theexhaust:jet byi the threaded engagement fjof the conduit 1'5 with therplate 12. 'l he fjamenutl8 having. been properly adjusted and the bolts 19 made to engage the spreader 16, the flow of exhaust steam moving out of the end of thejet 11 will encounter the spreader 16, and by means of the conical shape of the spreader, the
maj or portion thereof will be deflected outwardly while a certain smaller portion will Y flow through the conduit 15. Thus the ex-v haust steam as it leaves the exhaust jet will be so spread as to fill the cross-section area of the smoke stack 20 as indicated by the arrows in Figure 1, and by the movement of this column of steam that fills the cros's-section area of'the stack a, partial vacuum is created in the front end'of the smoke box with the result that anevendraft' is in the fire box for the obvious purpose. I
Having thus described my invention what i I I claim is 1. In combination with the exhaustnozzle ofa steam locomotive of a. deviceto evenly spread the flow of steam as it leaves said noz-s zle', said means comprising a vertically adjustable spreader for spreading the flow-of steam; and a conduit passingcentrally and longitudinally through said spreader to permit a portion of the steam to pass therethrough, and thus completely fill. the area of the Smokestack and cause an even draft in the firebox of the locomotive.
2. An exhaust steam spreadingattachment it for thefexhaust nozzle of a locomotive; Comprisinga nozzle tip for attachment to the nozzle, arms carried by said collar, a spreader adjustably supported by said arms, and ad justable means engaging thetop face of the spreader and out of the path of the flowof spreaderjon the lower endthe'reof, and a sec;
0nd means passing through said-plate and engaging the top face 50f said spreader, to
brace: said spreaderagainst the impact of steam thereagainst, Without impedingzthe' 'flow ofsteam from-the nozzle; i p 4. An exhaust steam spreadingattachment r r for the exhaust nozzle ofja steam locomotive,
7 comprising a framemountedon the vexhausts a through said spreadertozpermit a portion of 1 the steam*to,,pass therethrough, and adjust-':
able means carried on said plate to brace the, spreader against the impact ofthe How of 40;
nozzle, including a plate and arms attached *to the nozzle'to support the plate in'espaced relation to the nozzle, :a cconeeshaped steam spreader adjustably carried on said plate to be'positioned in vertical spaced relation to the exhaust nozzle to regulate the'fiow of steam-out-of the nozzle a conduit passing steam out 'of; the nozzle.;--
