This invention relates to steam locomotives and has for its object the provision of an attachment for theconventionaltype of steam;
above set forth in which means of an adjustable nature is provided tothe end that the device may be attached to locomotives of different types providing steam exhaust of different conditions.
A still further object of this invention is to provide an exhaust steam nozzle attachment for the purpose before set out that is simple in constructiomeasily and quickly attachable and can be manufactured at the minimum cost. i

Referring to the parts by reference numerals wherein like parts are designated by the like numerals in the several views, 10 designates a nozzble tip that is adapted to be threaded on the upper end of the exhaust I nozzle 11. The steam spreading means consists of a plate 12 having fixed thereto sup- V porting arms 13 that have their lower ends in detachable connection 'with the nozzle tip 10 by the means 14:. Passing through through the plate 12 and in threaded connection therewith is a threaded pipe or conduit 15 which in turn has the lowermost portion thereof in threaded engagement with the conical spreader 16. This means is provided to strengthen the assembly sothat the chance of the spreader '16being moved by the blasts of exhaus t steam against the same willsbe reduced to a minimum;

maj or portion thereof will be deflected outwardly while a certain smaller portion will Y flow through the conduit 15. Thus the ex-v haust steam as it leaves the exhaust jet will be so spread as to fill the cross-section area of the smoke stack 20 as indicated by the arrows in Figure 1, and by the movement of this column of steam that fills the cros's-section area of'the stack a, partial vacuum is created in the front end'of the smoke box with the result that anevendraft' is in the fire box for the obvious purpose. Having thus described my invention what i I I claim is 1. In combination with the exhaustnozzle ofa steam locomotive of a. deviceto evenly spread the flow of steam as it leaves said noz-s zle', said means comprising a vertically adjustable spreader for spreading the flow-of steam; and a conduit passingcentrally and longitudinally through said spreader to permit a portion of the steam to pass therethrough, and thus completely fill. the area of the Smokestack and cause an even draft in the firebox of the locomotive.
