Description

A. ''llwCDMPUN BLOWER NOZZLE AND EXHAUST SPREADER Filed March 11,. 1924 mounted on the exhaust nozzle body o slot 21 formed inthe threaded shank 6 oi the nozzle. `This gives a less flexible adjustment but holds `the parts positively in adjusted positions throughout the range of adjustment usually required.
The cross web 8 of the spider is made narrow in cross section and tapered to a sharp edge above and below so as to form as small an obstruction as possible to the flow of the exhaust steam. In its prei'erred form the greatest diameter of the nozzle comes be low its top edge in a position where it stands in the correct relation to the tip 4 to produce the spreading action desired. A. tool grip 22 is on the .upper closed end of the plug- 17.
In practice, the spreader nozzle spider is so that the blower` nozzle will stand concentrie with the exhaust nozzle and the tip l at'- ter being set on the spider is bolted to the body 3 and the apparatus is ready for service. The spreading of both the exhaust and live steam under control will give the most ellicient exhaust. The device is readily applicable to existing locomotives and requires no change in their standard parts.
Though I have described with great particularit'y the details ot the embodiment of the. invention herein shown, it is not to be construed that am limited thereto, as `Changes in arrangement and substitution ot equivalents may be made by those skilled in the art Without departing from the invention asdelined in the appended claims.
IIaving thus described my invention, what- I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
l. A blower nozzle and exhaust spreader for locomotives, comprising a nozzle having a live steam s upply and a jet orice formed between inner and outer members which flare upwardly, and means to mount the blower nozzle in the locomotive exhaust noz zle.
Q'. A blower nozzle and exhaust spreader tor locomotives7 comprising a nozzle having a live steam supply and a jet orifice formed between inner and outer members which flare upwardly, and means to mount the blower nozzle with its outer flaring member disposed concentrically in the locomotive exhaust nozzle.
3. The combination with a locomotive exe haust nozzle. ot a. blower nozzle mounted concentrically therein and having an inverted conical body vertically. adjustably mounted within the contracted exhaust noz zle tip and` adapted to spread the exhaust.
4;. The combination with a locomotive exhaust nozzle comprising a body portion and a tip of a blower nozzle having a mounting spider adapted to be held between the exhaust nozzle body and its tip` said blower nozzle having an upwardly flaring body adapted to spread the exhaust.
The combination with a loeomoti ve exhaust nozzle comprising a body portion and a tip, of a blower nozzle having a mounting spider adapted to be held between the ex- ,haust nozzle body and its tip. said blower nozzle having an upwardly flaring body adapted to spread the exhaust, a live steam supply tothe blower nozzle. and means on the blower nozzle to spread the live steam jet..
6. A locomotive blower having an eularged chamber at the discharge end ol the bore, and a spreader plug screwed into said chamber and haring a bottom bore opening into the nozzle bore` and lateral steam outlet ports opening trom its bore into said chamber, the plug forming an adjustable tapering spreader for the steam flowing through said chamber.
In testimony7 whereof I aliix my signature,
ANDREW THOMPSON.
