My invention relates to a spraying nozzle or atomizer, and particularly to that type of spraying nozzle in which a compressed fluid such for example as compressed air or steam .5 is employed for spraying or atomizing a liquid of any consistency, and more particularly to heavy gelatinous liquids or solutions, and

In carrying out the invention the com- 1 0 pressed fluid is preferably delivered in the form of a swirling cone, and the liquid to be sprayed or atomized is so delivered that the swirling cone of compressed fluid completely or substantially envelops and is in. contact with the liquid from the time and place of its delivery until it is completely sprayed or atomized. In carrying out the invention the apparatus made in accordance therewith, preferably includes a conicalbody member and a liquid deliv'ery pipe'centrally disposed therewith so as to provide at the mouths or discharge orifices of these.,members an annular discharge passage for the fluid under pressure. The invention also contemplates the provision of means for causing the fluid under pressure to assume a swirling conical form as emitted from the annular orifice, and in the preferred form of the invention the liquid discharge pipe is provided with a double conical bone, whereby the liquid as discharged is engaged" with and enveloped by the swirling cone of the compressed fluid to ef-' fect complete atomization of the liquid, as will be hereinafter more particularly de-. scribed. Interiorly,-the body member a, is fit ed with a guide plate c, which directs the inconr ing compressed fluid 'so that the same caused totravel in a circular path and to advance with an increasing velocity to the orificeof the body member at the smaller end thereof, it being noted that to assist this action the inlet connection is placed in a position which is substantially tangential to-the larger'end of the body member a. Within the body member a, and' 'con eentrictherewith, is a liquid discharge pipe 6. This discharge pipe 6, passes through the cap or cover a, and in a suitable position is provided with an inlet connection f, for supplying the liquid to be sprayed or atomized. The bore of the liquid pipe 8, is double coned sha e and the discharge orifice of the pipe 6, is su stantially in the same plane as the smaller end of the body member a, whereb there is provided an annular discharge ori ce d, between these parts of the spraying nozzle. By this structure the compressed fluid is discharged in the form of a double cone as indicated at d and d, the vertex of each cone being indicated at d. Furthermore as indicated in the drawingsithe effect of the double cone shaped bore of the discharge is to sufficiently retard the rate of discharge of the liquid as to permit the liquid in leaving the orifice at the end of the outwardl tapering portion of the conical bore of t e p1pe e, to be entirely enveloped, and the surface portion thereof engaged by the swirling cone d of the fluid under pressure, which as will be understood, assists materially in the complete-atomization of the liquid to be sprayed.
The bore at the outerend of the pipe e is referably fitted with aplunger g, controlled y a spring h, whereby the inner end of the plunger may be employed to clear the pas sage 1n the pipe e, and may also be set to re ulate and'control the passage of the liquld through the same. 1
I claim as my invention: 1 1. In a spraying nozzle, a liquid supply pipe open at one end and having an unimeded but restricted port appreciably distant rom the open end thereof, the inner wall of the pipe flaring outwardly from the t i ted port to the end thereof to cause a li uid passing through the restricted port to ow slower along the flaring wall to the open end of the pipe, and a casing surrounding the said pipe and tapering to an open end substantially coincident with the open end of the said liquid supply pipe and forming therewith an annular discharge port ,for a fluid under pressure whereby the liquid flowing,
through the supply pipe in its substantial entirety is brought directly into contact with the fluid as the same is discharged through the said annular discharge port. 1
2. In a spraying nozzle, a liquid supply pipe open at one end and having an unnnded but restricted port appreciably distant rom the open end thereof, the inner wall of the pipe flaring outwardly from the restricted port to the end thereof to cause a liquid passing through the restrictive port to flow slower along the flaring wall to the open end of the pipe, a casing surrounding the said pipe and tapering to an open end substantially coincident with the open end of the said liquid supply pipe-and forming therewith an annular discharge port, and means for admitting a fluid under pressure in a direction tangential to theinner taperin wall of the casing whereby through the inclination of the said wall and the tangential direction at which it is admit-- ted the said fluid is discharged in the form of an inwardly directed swirling cone at the said annular discharge port whereby the liquid passing through the said li uid supply pipe in its substantial entirety is rought d1- rectly into contact with the fluid as the same is discharged from the said annular discharge port.
