DEVICE FOR POINTING BRISTLES OF BRUSHES Patented Nov. 22, 1932 UNITED STATES BIIOHIBO IZAWA, OF KYOTO, JAPAN DEVICE FOR POINTING BBISTLES OI BRUSHES Application filed larch 20, 1981, Serial No. 524,021, and in Japan December 18, 1980.
This invention relates to a device for pointin bristles of brushes automatically. The ob ect thereof is to obtain many such brushes at the same time.
For the above purpose, this invention is provided with a sliding table mounted with a plurality of brush holders and a plurality of abrading wheels to pass the said brush holders under them to point the bristles.

Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing the device according to this invention;

(1) is a bed, and (2) a sliding table mounted on the rails formed on the upper surface of the bed (1) by means of rollers (4) beared on the brackets (3) secured to the under side of the sliding table (2) A rack (6) fixed to the under surface of the sliding table (2) is engaged with a gear (9) keyed on a shaft (8) to one end of which is fixed a pulley (7 the gear (9) being engaged with a gear 2 34 fixed on a shaft (11) having a pulley secured to its one end. Another gear (12) fixed on the shaft (11) is engaged with a gear (15) fixed on a shaft (14). On the op- 35 posite sideof the pulley (7) (10) and at one end of the shaft (14) is fixed a gear (13) driven by a gear secured on a shaft (19) which has fixed pulleys (16) (17 and loose pulley (18). A belt shifter (21) is connected to one end of a lever (26) having a projection which projects into a slot (24) of a rocking arm (23) secured at the lower end of a vertical shaft (22). On the upper end of the vertical shaft (22) is mounted a sleeve (29) which is provided with two arms (27) (28). These arms cooperate respectively with dogs (31) (32) adjustably mounted in a T slot formed on one side of the sliding table (2) to turn the vertical shaft (22) and thus to rock the rocking arm (23) and dis lace the belt shifter (21) and cause the sli ing table to be moved reciprocally.
A crank (35) disposed adjacent the pulley (10) is provided with two arms, one of which is connected with one end of the said lever (26), while to the other is ivoted one end of the rod (36) which exten s longitudinally along the side of the bed (1) The other end of the rod 36) is pivoted to the free end of the arm (38) secured tothe lower end of a vertical shaft (37) To the upper end of the above vertical shaft (37 is secured a controlling arm (39) which is adapted to rock the brush holders to be' described hereafter. The arm (38) has around head plunger (41) constantly depressed downwardly by a spring and cooperating with a recess (43) formed on a stationary bracket (42) to hold the said controlling arm (39) resiliently in an operative position.
Abrading wheels (45) with numerous pins (46) having abrading material like emery powder adhered thereto are mounted on a shaft (49) beared on bearings (48) (48) which are slidably secured to the housings fixed on the bed (1). The housin (47) is provided with brackets (51 (51) w ich hold adjusting screws (50 rotatably. The lower ends of the adjusting screws (50) (50) are screwed in the thread cut inside the projections (52) formed integrally with the bearings (48) to permit the regulation of the abrading wheels (45) in a vertical direction. The device shown in the drawings is provided with four housings, and the alternate abrading wheels rotate oppositely and have numerous pins (46) bent in opposite directions. Shafts (49) hearing on two housings (47) disposed centrally have two pulleys (54) and (55) fixed thereto, and shafts (49) hearing on two housings (47) disposed at the outside have a pulley (56). Brush holders are formed in a square form and divided into a plurality 'of rectangular compartments (61) by providing cross pieces. On the opposite walls of each compartment are fixed wavy plate springs (62) which clamp the plain surface of the handle (64; of the brushes (63) The brush holders 60 having gears (65) fixed on their under surface are mounted on the studs (66) fixed to the sliding table (2). The device shown in the drawings is provided with four brush holders (60) arranged side by side, and the gears (65) on the holders (60) disposed side by side enga ed with each other. On the upper edge of the brush holders (60) at the right end is fixed a ring (67) provided with a number of projections (66) on its periph- 'The following is the manner of operating this invention In the device. for pointing bristles of brushes according, to this invention, when the brushes (63) clamped between the plate springs (62) ,of the brush holders (60) are assed under the abrading wheels the pins (46) of the said wheels (45) act on the brushes (63) to point the ends of their bristles. 7
Figures 1 and 2 show how the sliding table (2) is movin right, and the left end brush holder (60) as passed under the abrading wheel (45) at the right end. In this case, the controlling arm (39) occupying a nonoperative position, the projection (66) on the periphery of the ring (67) freely asses in front of the said controlling arm 39). If the sliding table (2) is moved right from the position shown in Fig. 2, the left hand dog (31) is engaged with the arm (28) on the sleeve (29) to turn the vertical shaft (22) to rock the rocking arm (23) clockwise (Fig. 2) and thus pull the lever (26) forward (Fig. 2), shifting the belt shifter (21) to move the sliding table (2) leftward. At the same time, the lever (26) rocks the crank (35) in a clockwise direction (Fig. 2) and moves the controlling arm (39) to the operative position shown by a chain line in Fig. 6 through the rod (36), the arm (38) and the vertical shaft 37) Therefore, when the sliding table (2) is moved leftward, one of projections (66) on the ring (67) is engaged with the controlling arm (39) and rotates the right end brush holder through one pitch in its leftward movement, and consequently each brush holder (60) through gear in the direction shown by arrows in Fig. 2. Thus, when the brushes (63) are passing under the abrading wheel (45), the pin (46) abrades them from different directions. lVhen the sliding table (2) continues a leftward movement and the right end brush holder (60) has passed under the left end abrading wheel (45), the right dog (32) is engaged with the arm (27) to shift the belt shifter (21) to move the sliding table (2) rightward. At the same time, the. controlling arm (39) is moved through the lever (26), the crank (35), the rod (36) the arm (38) and the vertical'shaft (37 to the non-operative position shown in Fig. 2, thus allowin the ring (67 to pass in front of the control ing arm (39). At every reciprocate movement of sliding table (2), the brush holders (60) are rotated at a. sli ht angle, so that the brushes (60) are abr ed from different directions.
The present invention has the advantage of working up a number of brushes to be abraded uniformly at the sameltime, as the sliding table 2) having a plurality of brush holders mounted thereon move reciprocally and automat cally, and the brush holders rotate at a. slight angle at every reciprocating motion of the. sliding table and thus abrade the brushes from different directions.
The device shown has four abrading wheels and four brush holders, but it is to be understood that the number of these members may be changed at will.
I claim:
1. A device for pointing bristles, comprismg in combination, a movable abrading tool, a sliding table having reciprocating motion in a plane contiguous to the path of movement of said tool, a plurality of rotatable brush holders mounted on the sliding table, said brush holders being divided into a plurality of rectangular compartments, wavy plate springs secured to the opposite walls of said compartments, means cooperatively connecting all of the brush holders and a controlling device rotating said brush holders one step atbeivery reciprocating motion of the sliding ta e.
2. A device for pointing bristles, comprising in combination, arotatable abrading tool, a sliding table having reciprocating motion in a plane contiguous to the path of rotation of said tool, a plurality of rotatable brush holders mounted on the sliding table, said brush holders being divided into a plurality of rectangular compartments, wavy plate springs secured to the opposite walls of said compartments, means cooperatively connecting all of the brush holders and a controlling device rotating said brush holders one step at every reciprocating motion. of the sliding table, said cooperatively connecting means comprising gears secured to the under sides of said brush holders and in engagement with each other.

A device for pointing bristles, compris- I ing in combination, a plurality of rotatable abrading tools, a sliding table having reciprocating motion in a plane contiguous to the path of rotation of said tools, a plurality of rotatable brush holders mounted on the slidvice comprising a ring secured to one of said brush holders, and having on its periphery a plurality of radially extending projections, and a controlling arm actuated by the movement of the reciprocating table into and out of position to engage one of said projections, thereby to impart rotary motion to said ring.
