This invention relates to improvements in sheet metal hinged doors and door openings for sheet metal silos.
An object of the invention is to provide a sheet metal silo with a reinforced door opening and with a reinforced sheet metal door hinged to swing inward and when closed to fit flush with the inside wall of the silo so that the pressure of the material within the silo aids in pressing the door against the door jamb effecting a substantially air-tight closure and a strengthened structure to an extent that it cannot bulge at the door.
Further objects and features of the invention are more fullv set forth in a description of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a silo or sheet metal container illustrating in front elevation the improved sheet metal door and door jamb.
Figure 2 is an enlarged section on line 22, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged section on line 33, Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detailed section of a portion of the section or view shown in Figure 2 at a point at which the door engages with the jamb, showing the jamb overlapping the edge portion of the door opening in the wall section.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a portion of a wall of a sheet metal container or silo preferably composed of sheet metal sections bolted together, the bolts preferably passing through flanges formed on the sections to make a flanged joint.
An appropriate size of door opening is cut through one of the wall sections which is bound on the exterior side of the wall sec tion by a metal frame composed of top and bottom strips 2-2 of heavy flat steel bars and vertical channel irons 83, all riveted to the wall section. The frame overlaps the opening in the wall section so that the door 4 hinged to the interior of the silo marginally engages the frame, providing a amb for the door with the inside surface of the door flush with the inside surface of the container when the door is closed.
The cross strips 22 extend some distance beyond the side of the width of the opening and the vertical channel irons at their opposite ends are each offset each to overlap and interlock with the cross strips and are riveted thereto. The door opening is therefore marginally reinforced and the side sheets or sections strengthened to an extent that bulging at or near the doors is impossible.
The door along its opposite edges vertically is reinforced by a pair of angle irons 5-5 riveted to the exterior side of the door, and crosswise by a pair of appropriately spaced pressed steel rungs or stiles 6-6 bolted to the exterior side of the door which serve as a ladder for the container, the doors in silo construction being vertically aligned, a door for each section height or alternate section.
The door is locked by a pair of hasps 7 7 v pivoted on the exterior side of the door and arranged to clasp over one of the reinforcing angle irons and adjoining channel iron of the A door frame for sheet metal structures,
comprising, channel iron j ambs and top and bottom cross members of flat strip metal connecting with the jambs, the jambs having their opposite ends ofiset at the connection with the cross members and the cross members extending laterally beyond the j ambs for reinforcing the wall structure at and beyond the.
door opening, the frame adapted to be secured about a door opening in a sheet metal structure to overlap the open edges of the opening for recessing a sheet metal door when closed to bear against the frame and bring its inner surface flush with the inner surface of the container.
