My invention relates generally to a pumping jack for use in the oil fields.
Practically all pumping jacks have a reciprocating beam with depending pumping and counterbalancing equipment and the inertia of same prevents smooth running and good operation. At the start of each oscillaation of the beam there is the inertia of the moving parts to be overcome. This causes 19 a shock.
One advantage which I obtain is the diminishment of this initial shock. As the low gear of an automobile advantageously changes the speed ratio so my curved rocker arm and its contacting pulling element function. In other words I have a longer leverage at the start of the pumping stroke than at the finish if such is desired. However, the maximum leverage point may be shifted to any place within limits.
Another advantage is obtained by placing the rocker casting on the same side of the central fulcrum as the counterweight. In this position it not only aids in counterbalancing the well equipment but also positions the contact point between the rocker and its pulling element so that the power stroke tends to keep the jack on the ground. In other words the rear legs of the jack are in compression.
Yet another advantage obtained in my improved jack is the adjustment of the rocker casting toward and from the central pivot point. This provides for different length strokes.
Further objects pertaining to the details and economies of construction of my invention will appear from the following detailed description.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the connection between the rocker casting and the main oscillating beam.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates a triangular frame firmly mounted upon a base, B, and having a main 5 oscillating beam, C, fulcrumed at the top thereof. Counterweight, D, on one end of the beam, C, balances the head, E, and its suspended equipment which hangs in the well F. 1
The stationary base frame, A, consists of of the base members by means of feet 43 and 65 as clearly shown in Figs; 1 and 2. The upper ends of these side members are rigidly fixed to the bearingcasting 13. I

A bolt, 21, holds the counterweight, D, to one end of the oscillating beam, 20. The head, E, is adjustably or slidably supported upon the opposite end of the beam by means of slots, 22. Intermediate the ends of the beam four slots, 23, 24, 25 and 26 are formed. See Figs. 1 and 4.
A series of holes, 31 and 32 are bored or formed in members 27 and 28, respectively, and bolts, 33 and 34, pass through holes in the ends of the rocker casting 35 to adjustably hold the same in place.
The casting, 35, has a groove, 36, wherein rides the pulling element or cable, 37. A clamp, 38, fastens the cable to the power shackle rod, 39. i
The other end of the cable, 37, extends around in the groove, 36, and is held to the far end of the casting by means of the clamp, 40. The cable always abuts the rocker and hence its point of tangency therewith is constantly changing thus diminishing or increasing the load upon the prime mover.
While I have described a complete embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the particular construction shown, my invention being in fact limited solely by the attached claims.
What I claim is: V
1. A pump jack consisting of a support, a beam, means for mounting the beam on said support, side members fastened near each end of the beam and extending downwardly and inwardly, said side members having a series of holes near their lower ends, a curved rocker having holes therein, means passing through the holes foradjustably mounting said rocker on said side members and means for actuating the curved rocker. A pump jack as set forth in claim 1 further characterized by the fact that the means for actuating the curved rocker is a flexible element fastened near one end of the curved rocker, and further means for pulling said element in about a horizontal direction whereby it contacts more or less with said rocker depending upon the position of said beam and its appurtenances.

A jack comprisinga support, a frame pivotally mounted on the support, a rocker having a curved surface, adjustable means for adj'ustably mounting said rocker on said frame whereby said rocker may be moved to and from the center and also turned with relation thereto and means attached along the curved surface to actuate the rocker.
