IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR SETTING UP BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,787. dated March 27, 1877; application filed 0 January 15, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. H. EWING, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Setting Up Barrels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in machines for setting up barrels; and it consists in the use of a revolving former and a weighted cord for holding the staves in position ready to be trussed, whereby the work can be more rapidly and easily performed, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
a represents a suitable frame or base. up through which rises a spindle, 12, upon which spindle revolves the form a. This form consists of the round iron base, which has a flange, d, all around its outer upper edge, and a slightly curved sloping bottom, 0, and the post 9, which is the same size half its way up to the shoulder f,.and then of a smaller size to its top. This post is thus made smaller at its top, so as to give the operator room for the free use of his hands between the staves that he is setting up and the post. On the top of the post is placed the round disk h, which is prevented from revolving, except with the post, by means of a pin or other stop, and which serves as a guide for setting up the staves. This disk is just the size of the head of the keg or barrel that is being formed, and in case the truss should clamp the staves too tightly to it as "the staves are lifted from, around the post after being tightened together, the disk will be taken off withthem, when 7 it can be readily separated from them.
If so desired, this disk can be changed for others of different sizes, according to the size of the keg or barrel being made.
Fastened to the edge of this disk is one end of a cord, rope, or chain, '6, which has its other end passed over a pulley, l, on a post, m, and fastened to a weight, n.
In setting *up the staves, the first one is placed so that the side of its top end bears against the pin to which the end of the rope is fastened, and as each succeeding stave is placed in position the form is turned so that the rope 11 laps around it, and thus binds it in position against the disk.
As the flange d prevents the lower ends of the staves from being displaced after they are all in position, a truss-hoop is passed over their top ends, and a hoop over their centers, when they are ready to be removed to a windlassing machine to have the other end windlassed.
By having the bottom 0 curved and slanting, the lower ends of the staves are left perfectly free to move inward as the central hoop is being driven on.
By having a revolving form, the operator can turn his work in any position he may desire, and he does not need to stoop or to walk around it, while he can work much more rapidly and efl'ectively.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a machine for setting up staves, a hori zontally-revolving form, as herein shown and described, upon which the staves are set on end, and which has a flange around its edge, substantially as described.
2. In a machine for setting up staves, the revolving form shown and described, that is provided with the central post g, in combination with a weighted rope for holding the staves in position against the disk h, substantially as shown.
