This invention relates to hair curling apparatus; more particularly to artificially heated units for curling hair and impartlng thereto so-called permanent waves.
In hair curling apparatus, as'known'to me, there are utilized artificially heated units, preferably and conveniently heated by elecby surrounding the electric unit about 'a strand of hair which has been suitably mounted upon some support. In connection with this hair heating process, different chemical preparations are used for two distinct treatments; one'is called a dry wind process and the other a wet wind process.

It is a. further 'obJect of my invention to a provide a hair curling apparatus in the nature of: an artificially heated tube'whichmay be positioned about properly mounted strands of hair, for heating the 'same,rthe

Itis further contemplated by me to provide a hair curling apparatus in the nature Of an electricallyheated tube,-which includes means to optionally either maintain the tube trical resistance elements which are applied" open during the time that the tube is applied to the strand of hair for'setting the same, or maintain it closed, depending upon the preparations employed in. connection with the process of imparting a so-called permanent wave to'hair. Thus by my invention, an electrically heated tube that is used for imparting permanent waves to hair may be changed toa closed type of heater,or an open typ'e'of heater, or alternatedfrom one to the other at will, with various degrees of the open position, whereby the heater may be'used in connection with difiusible chem: ical, preparations used in connection with the hair which are-desired to escape or be vola tilized'during theheating process, or whereby those preparations or' compositions which are I desired to be retained in proximity to the strand of hair treated may be so maintained by keeping the tubeclosed, or the tube may further be varied permitting variation from one process to the other, or. combinations thereof. s I

Making reference to the drawing, I have illustrated a single heater ofa hair curling apparatus used for imparting a so-called permanent wave to hair. connection with heating units generally einployed in numbers sufiicient to treat all the hair of the scalp of an individual at one operation so that from to 40 of these units ficient number of windings are employed,
properly insulated from each other by sheets of mica or similar heat resisting and electrical insulating n1aterial.- A'number of strands of heatresisting material are employed to give the proper amount of heating, in accordance with the desired process.

The'cap 32is preferably formed'w ith The illustration is in an inwardlydirected neck 34 and is orificed at 35. This orifice is slightly smaller than the ball member 21. The side walls of the orifice 35 are such that a portion of the ball member 21 will serve to bring the opening of the orifice 31 all within the neck portion 34 of the cap 82. The walls of the orifice 35 also serve as stops on abutments for the finger member30 and in this manner, as shown in the dotted positions,serve to eitherhold the ball member in the fully-opened position or in the fully closed position. Thespring member 26 also serves to quickly move the ball member either to the fully opened position or to the fully closed position once it has been started from the dead center position. Thus, if the finger member 30 is used to move the ball member 21 in a counterclockwise direction, this movement will be against the spring pressure' ofthe spring 26 until about 90 of movement has been obtained, when the spring pressure will tend to continue the movement of the ball member 21 towards the second dean center position to the right hand side of, the pivots 22.
By this construction the valving member is provided over the end l l'of the tube 10, whereby the tubular heating member 10 may e maintained fully opened with the orifice 31 in alignment with the tubular member 10, or this heating tube 10 may be maintained closed by turning the ball member to the position shown in Fi ure 3, in which position the orifice 31 is arranged transversely to the tube 10.
In the preferred embodiment as illustrated, t 1e valving member may be moved quickly and .rapidly from a position leaving the tube 10 fully open, or to a position, fully closing the end of the tube 10. The open po- 1 sition is found desirable when the hair curler ball member thus deis to be used with a so-called dry wind treat ment of the hair for imparting a permanent wave. This dry wind treatment comprises using a preparation probably including an ammonia solution in which, it is desirable that during the heating process, the fumes escape while the shrinking of the hair takes place. Where a wet wind process is employed which includes applying the chemi-. cal preparation upon the hair itself, and which preparation includes oil constituents together with a starch material, soda, borax, and other such materials. In this latter treatment ;it is desirable that the tube be closed in order that the vaporous materials be maintained in contact with the hair and for other purposes which those skilled in the art willreadily appreciate.
" Thus the beautician may determine from the appearance, texture and general charac teri'stics of the hair to betreated whether the dry wind process .orthe wet wind processmay be mostefl'ectively employed. f Withoutuse of} other apparatus, the treatment may be applied, adjusting the heating tubes in accordance with whether quick diffusion of the preparation is found desirable and thereby adjusting the heaters to the open position, or whether slow difiusion or no diffusion is desired, in which event the valving element previously described is moved either to the fully closed position orpartially closed position. It will be understood that adjustment may be made by the spring element or frictional element to hold'the ball memtrolled within limits by the degree ofrcir culation resulting from controlling the opening of the valving member15.
The valving assembly 15 as heretofore de: scribed has not been emphasized as to the material from which it is made, and though this may be made of metal, it is preferred that some non-metallic material be employed, such as hard rubber, bakelite, or wood. Thus, the heating members may be .more readily handled without danger of scorching the hand during the time that the current is on, and serves to heat the heating elements.
In general, it will be observedthat I have provided a hair curling apparatus which not only serves a dual purpose in a single apparatus of both an open type and a closed type tube, but variations or combinations of the processes of treating the hair may beem'.

Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hair curling device, a heater tube comprising a hair engaging section and a spring guided valving element at its opposite end. i i
2. In a hair curling device, a heater tube, including a hair engaging section, and means at its opposite end for optionally maintaining the tube opened or closed, the opening or closing operation being spring guided, whereby each position may be assumed quickly. r

In a hair curling apparatus, a heater tube, a hair engaging section, a heating ele ment adjacent said section,omeans opposite to the hair engaging section for permitting the vaporous products to pass off to the atmosphere, and a spring operable valving ele ment adjacent said'end for limitin sage open to the atmosphere; U a. A hair curling device, comprising a heater tube, a hair engaging section at one end heatiin means ad'acent said hair engaging section, an opening in said tube oppositely disposed to the heating means whereby the vaporous products may circulate out wardly from theinterior of said tube, a valving member over said opening, comprising a ball member, said ball member being orificed whereby it may be aligned with the aforesaid vapor tube opening, means for pivotally mounting said ball member, said ball member 7 cooperating with said tube and a cap member to maintain said heater tubeopen or closed, and means for actuating said ball member to the open or closed position.
