.The primary object of the invention is to provide afpencil Sharpener of the portable i type comprising a tubular member providedv witha pencil sharpening blade that carries Va clasp extension whereby the pencil Sharpener maybe carried upon'either end of the'pencil Withthe clasp member engageable with the usual `annular beads ,onsthe ferrule of the pencil or with-a side oi the pencil adjacent the pointed sharpened end. 'l
A further obj ect of the invention is to pro# vide a portable pencil Sharpener of the -foregoing character in the form of a tubular mem# ber having-a/longitudinal slot in one side forV the mounting of-a combined sharpening blade and clasp extending into the bore of the tubular member, the interior body portion of the tubular member-having a pocket thereinA to receive the sharpened pointed end of' a pencil with thepclas'p engageablerwith a sideoffthe pencil adjacent the pointed fend vfor, theiprotection of the sharpened'pencil when out of '25 use and said clasp being `retained upon Ythe opposite end of the pencil when the latter is in use by means of the 'clasp resiliently. engaging the usual annular beads on the ferrule ofthepencihV Y.' Y Gf 'i 3 With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent vas the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination'and arrangement of parts hereinater morefully described, shownk in the accompanying drawing andclaimed. K "l .i In the drawing v A f F`gure 1 is a side elevational view of the pencil vSharpener mounted upon thel eraser carrying end of alpencil; .l l Figure 2Y is a side elevational vewxof the Sharpener with the pointed end of the pencil insertedtherein for a sharpening operation; Figure is an end elevational view of the VSharpener disclosing the sharpening. blade exp Application inegi August i7, 1932. seriain'o, 629261.

Figure v 9 is a 'longitudinal' sectional vView, similar to Figures 5 and 6, showing the point#` ed end of a pencil'confined .within the sharpener by'l meansof the clasp;`
{Referring more indetail to the accom- Y* panying drawing, there is illustrated a pencil SharpenerV constructed of any suitablematerial desired, such as metal, hard rubber or the like, the pencil Sharpener l0 being of cylindrical form and longitudinally corrugated as at 11 to `i'acilitate vsharpening rotation thereof when mounted uponthepointed end ofa pencil. kThe `cylindricalmember of the Y pencil `sharpener 10 includes' the pencil sharp# ening Vend 12 and the pencil carrying end 13.v
The pencil sharpening end 12;'i`s'provided .with a canted conical recess'14 having one side thereof substantially parallel-with the adjacent sideV of; the cylindricalbody lof the Sharpener while the'iother' siderin'clinedVv to provide an interior-body portion15 of in'- K creased; diameter providingua transversely ex= 'u tending crossshoulder 16 at the inner end of the socket 17 at the pencil carrying end 13 of the sharpener.
A longitudinally extending slot 18 is formed in the side of the cylindrical member of the Sharpener and opens into the conical recess 14 and pocket 17 at the side of the sharpener` spaced from the increased body portion 15 for the mounting of a combined pencil sharpening blade and pencil gripping clasp. The slot 18 extends completely through the pencil sharpening end 12 of the device and terminates inwardly of the pencil carrying end 18, being closed by the bridge piece 19,. One ofthe wallso the slot`18 is tangentially V'disposedwith respect tothe cylindrical memberY of the Sharpener orthe' mounting of a pencil sharpening blade 2Qretained in position on the said Walllo'y means of the screw 21 with theA sharpened edge `oi' the blade extending into the conical recess 14 as. clearlyillustrated in FiguresV 3 and 7. The blade 20 extends lsubstantially the complete length of the conicalrecess 14 and at its inner end carries a laterally` offset clasp extension 22 normallyA disposed within the pocket 17 at the pencil carrying end 13 of the device withan oifset shoulder 28 adjacent `the ree end of the clasp 22. c Y.
When the pencil `Sharpener is out of; use, the same may be carried upon the errule carrying end ofthe pencil P. as.shown in Figures 1 and 5 with the shoulder 23 of the clasp 22 resiliently engaged with an annular bead B carried by thepencil ferrule F.V To sharpen the pencil P,- thek pencilis removed from the pocket 17 and the sharpening or pointed end AE is insertedin the conical recess 14, rotation of the Sharpener uponthe pointed end'of the pencil facilitated by the corrugations 14CA producing a sharpened pointon the pencil as Vshown in Figure 6. The Sharpener may be carried by the pencil as shown in Figures 1 and 5 when thepencil is being used and when vthe pencil is out of service,"the pointed or sharpenedend VE thereofis'protected by the mounting of a Sharpener on the pointed end of the pencil as illustrated in Figure 9.
The cross wall 16 of the bodyl portion 15 of the sharpeneris provided with a conical so cket 24 to receive the pointed end of the pencil with the clasp 22 engaged witha side of the pencil as illustrated in Figure 9 forV retaining the sharpening device on the pencil. Y
--While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment ofthe invention,
it is nevertheless to be understood that minor ,changes may be made therein without des parting from the spirit and scope of the'invention as claimed. f
