My invention relates to holding devices, and more particularly to devices for supporting crayons, and the like, and the principal object-of my invention is to provide new and improved means for this purpose. In the drawing accompanying this specification and forming a part of this application, I have shown, for purposes of illustration, one form which my invention may assume, and in this drawing:

Figure 1 is a top plan view of the interior ofa paint kit, with the lid raised, and showing the invention applied in connection with said paint kit,

Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevational View of one of the holdingdevices, and showing a fragment of thesupport with which it is associated.

As illustrated in the drawing, the invention is utilized in connection with a paint box, or a paint kit. The paint box comprises a box-like body portion indicated at 10, and a hinged lid 11. The body portion 10 is provided preferably with a false bottom 12, upon which are secured, by any suitable means, various blocks or tablets of paint, as indicated at 13, the positions of the tablets being arranged in any suitable way.

The holding means contemplated by my invention are preferably disposed between the groups of paint blocks or tablets, being preferably two in number, and indicated by the reference characters 14 and 15. Each of the holding devices is adapted to support a group of crayons, shown at 16, and are alike in all respects.

Each holding device comprises a pair of walls l717,.of pasteboard or other suitable material, which are connected at one set of ends by a connecting web 18, the pasteboard being folded or creased along the lines indicated at 19 to provide flexible hinges for permitting tilting of the walls 17-17 at diiforent angles relative to each other.

The walls 17-17 are each provided witha plurality of apertures 20 which may be arranged in a row, the apertures in one wall being aligned with reference to the apertures of the opposite wall, and of suflicient size to enable crayons 16 normally to be freely inserted and removed with respect thereto.

The free ends of the walls 17-17, preferably adjacent the apertures, are somewhat offset, as by crimping or scoring, a shown at 21. The free ends of the walls below the offsets form portions 22-22 adapted to be inserted into parallel slits 23-23 provided in the false bottom 12 of the paint box. These slits are spaced apart a predetermined distance so as to tilt the walls 17-17 in downwardly diverging relation with reference to the upper portions when the portions 2222 are inserted into the slits. The portions 2222 are inserted into the slits a suiiicient distance to engage the offsets with the definingedges of the slits, thereby preventing the end portions from slipping out of the slits.

While the walls 1717 are substantially in parallel relation, the crayons 16 may be inserted into the apertures, and although supported sufliciently for some purposes, the crayons are not tightly held in the apertures. When the end portions 2222 of the walls are engaged with the slits, the I, walls are spread and'tilted in divergent relation,and due to this action the defining edges of the apertures are disposed at an angle to the crayons, and bind thereon in such manner as to frictionally clamp the crayons in position and prevent accidental removal of the same.

It will be obvious that the particular embodiment of my invention herein shown and described embodies advantages other than those particularly pointed out or suggested herein, and that this particular embodiment of my invention may be variously changed and modified, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and it therefore will be understood that the disclosure herein is illustrative only, and that my invention is not limited thereto.

I claim:

1. A holder for rod-like members, comprising spaced walls connected together at one set of ends, and tiltable at dilferent angles with respect to each other, said walls having apertures therein, the edges of which, in one position of said walls, allow free insertion and removal of one of said rodlike members, and in another position of said walls, operate to engage said rod-like member to hold the same against accidental removal; and means for holding said Walls in clamping position, said means including a support having spaced slits for accommodating the ends of said Walls.

A holder for rod-like members, comprising spaced walls connected together at one set of ends, and tiltable at different angles with respectto each other, said walls having apertures therein, the edges of which, in one position of said walls, allow free insertion and removal of one of said rod-like members, and in another position of said walls, operate to engage said rod-like member to hold the same against accidental removal; and means for holding said walls in clamping position, said means including a support having slits for the reception of the ends of said walls, and said walls having offsets to hold the same in position with reference to said slits.

A paint boX of the character described, comprising: a holder for rod-like members, such as crayons, or the like, comprising spaced walls connected together at one set of ends, and tiltable at different angles with respect to each other, said walls each having a row of clamping apertures therein, the edges of which, in one position of said walls, allow free insertion and removal of said members, and in another position of said walls, operate to engage said members to hold the same against accidental removal; and means for holding said walls in clamping position, said means including a support having spaced slits for the reception of the ends of said Walls.

A holder for rod-like members, comprising spaced walls connected together at one set of ends, said walls having cooperating apertures therein to allow insertion and removalof said rod-like members with respect thereto; and means for fixing said walls in angular relation to each other, said means including a separate support having slits for the reception of the other set of ends of said Walls.

5. A holder for rod-like members, comprising: a base support having a false bottom provided with spaced slits; spaced walls connected together at one set of ends, and

t-iltable at different angles with respect to each other, said walls having apertures therein, the edges of which, in one position of said walls, allow free insertion and removal of one of said rod-like members, and in another position of said walls, operate to engage said rod-like member to clamp the same against accidental removal; and means for holding said walls in clamping position, said means including end portions on said Walls insertable into said spaced slits.

6. A holder for rod-like members, comprising: a base support having a false bottom provided with spaced slits; spaced walls connected together at one set of ends, and tiltable at different angles with respect to each other, said walls having apertures therein, the edges of which, in one position of said Walls, allow free insertion and removal of one of said rod-like members, and in another position of said walls, operate to engage said rod-like member to hold the same against accidental removal; and means for holding said Walls in clamping position, said means including end portions on said Walls insertable into said spaced slits, and having offsets interlocking with the edges of the false bottom defining said slits.

7. A holder for rod-like members, comprising: a base support having a false bottom provided with spaced slits; spaced walls connected together at one set of ends having apertures therein for the reception of said rod-like members, and means for securing said walls to said support including end portions upon said walls insertable into said slits.
