In connection With various types of records it is desirable to have indicia that identify the records, but which indicia are subject to periodic change. Various types of indicia and various types of means have been provided for flexibly or interchangeably cata loging various data, and the invention herein disclosed relates to means for such flexible or interchangeable indexing.

The Within disclosed invention is probably most readilyV explained in connection With loose leaf binders or the like, although it Will be readily evident, that the invention is not restricted in use to such devices, and that there are numerous other uses that are readily apparent. rEhe invention Will be eX- plained in connection With loose leaf binders.

In loose leaf binders such as are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the back members thereof are ordinarily used for permanently or temporarily carrying a label or sticker for indexing the contents of the binder. Such labels or stickers are generally glued onto the back members or may be per manently printed on the back or on the cover members. The use of the binders serves to mutilate the labels and/or printed matter on them and on the binder members until after a limited period of use, the characters are obliterated or mutilated so they are illegible.

An object of this invention is to provide an arrangement of marking that is especially adapted to temporary indexing, although the arrangement may also be used for permanent indexing, wherein the said disadvantages are obviated.

Another vobject is to provide simple means for attaining the indicated results.

These and other objects are attained by the means described herein and disclosed in the accompanying drawing in which:

The binder 10 illustrated herein is prefer-V ably made of a moldable substance, for eX- ample as explained in one of my copending ably rough and may for purpose of description be likened unto an etched area that may be vvproduced on glass by hydrofluoric acid or on metal plates by any of the etching meth-` ods used for attaining a similar effect.

Moldable substances of the character previously referred to are readily molded With such roughened or pitted areas. The recessed face Which may be rough or smoothV provides a surface upon which characters may be readily applied by such agencies as china crayons and the like. `China crayon which is procured on the market clings tenaciously to roughened surfaces, and the de` pressed face carrying markings of that character serves as protection vofthe characters from abrasion and contacts that might tend to impair the legability of the characters.v

Although other mediums may be employed to apply the characters, the particular characteristicof chin-a crayon causing it to adhere to such moldable substances as are specifically mentioned herein, make such crayons the preferred medium for use' on such substances and surfaces. For other substances and smooth surfaces, other mediums'may be used for attaining similar results.

Various volatile liquids, for example alcohol, benzine and the like, applied to a cloth or the like that may be rubbedv or brushed overV the characters, Will effect ready erasure or dissolution of the characters. The volatile liquids mentioned .herein are not harmful to u the molded substances mentioned, although it is to be understood that With an indeX- carrying member or device of a different composition as Well as the use of a marking medium other than china crayon, other sublili stances may and should be used for effecting removal of the characters.

vFrom the foregoing disclosure it is evident. that the depressed roughened character re ceiving surface 12, may be formed on platesof various shapes and contours that may beattached to various other articles and devices. In some instances where an extended charac-l ter receiving surface is desired, a plurality of recessed faces may be provided, such recesses being spaced by bands or strips of material l5 that are substantially flush with the face into which the recesses are developed, such bands or intervening strips serving tov withhold from entry into such recesses, such foreign objects as` might Contact the face of the plate and which otherwise might contact the recessed areas. One form of protective band or strip for the above purpose is indicated at 14.

What is claimed is 1. As a new article of manufacture a binder for memorandum sheets and indexing means therefor, the binder having a back of hard molded substance, the back including means for'retention of the sheets and which back has a glazed surface for resisting soil and wear, said back being provided with a roughened areaintegral with the glazed surface and bounded adjacent its edges by an extending protective wall adapted to preclude Contact of foreign objects with the roughened area and accidental erasure of uncovered characters temporarily written upon the roughened area.

2. As a new article of manufacture a binder for memorandum sheets and indexing ymeans therefor, the binder having a substantially non-porous back of hard molded substance of -condensation products of phenol and formaldehyde origin, and which back has a glazed surface for resisting soil and wear, said back being provided with an integral roughened area bounded adjacent its z edges by an extending protective wall adapted to preclude contact of foreign objects with the roughened area and accidental erasure of uncovered characters temporarily Written upon the roughened area. l
