This invention relates to printing presses and particularly to the combination with the usual machine of means for supporting the heavy web rolls independently thereof.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a support for these large rolls and their reels in which the vibrations set up by the fact that the rolls are often eccentric or out of balance will be transmitted away from the press so as not to affect materially the press or its framework and to provide means whereby the vibrations will be transmitted to a separate frame or building and absorbed thereby.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a press room showing presses constructed in accordance with this invention and illustrated in side elevation, and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
It has been customary in the construction of webprinting presses to place the reels carrying the webs on the framework of the press. On account of the eccentricity of the paper rolls and the fact that often they are out of balance their rotation causes serious vibrations. Under the old system these vibrations were transmitted directly to the frame of the press and not only weakened the frame and its connections with its supports but often resulted in imperfections in the printing.
This invention is designed to avoid these difficulties. I have shown several. web printing presses 10 mounted on a framework 11 and also the folders 12 carried by the same framework. This framework is shown as supported from the solid lower floor 9 of the building and passing through the upper floors 15 and 16 without being attached thereto.
Now, as stated, it has been customary usually in this type of press to mount the reels 13 for the web rolls 14 on this framework 11. In this invention the improvement consists in mounting the reels 13 on an entirely separate structure which, in the preferred form shown, consists of heavy floors 9 and l5 of the frame of the building.
In this case the vibrations caused by the rotation of these heavy paper rolls 14, if they are eccentric or out of balance, will not be transmitted to the framework 11 but will be transmitted directly to the walls of the building in which the pressroom is located and absorbed by the large and heavy floors and walls surrounding the press framework. In this way all damage to vthe framework of the presses due to these vibrations will Vbe eliminated and any inaccuracy in printing caused by the vibrations of the presses themselves from this cause will be avoided. Not only is a large body, already available, utilized for absorbing these vibrations but the press framework itself does not have to be constructed with special reference to the weight of these rolls and the vibrations caused, but a less expensive framework can be employed if desired.
Although I have illustrated and described only one form of the invention I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore I do not wish to be limited in this respect but what I do claim is 1. The combination with a web printing press and its frame, of an entirely separate independent structure out of contact with said frame and means on the structure for supporting a reel for carrying the web rolls for supplying said press with paper, whereby the vibrations of the reel will not be transmitted directly to the press.
2. The combination with a building providing a support, a framework independently of and out vof Contact with said support, a plurality of web printing presses carried by said framework at different elevations and web roll reels carried by said support for supplying the several presses with paper.
3. The combination with a building having heavy floors and web rollreels carried directly by said flo-ors, of a printing press framework carried by the building out of Contact with said ioors and independently of and ont of Contact ywith the reels and web printing pressesearried by said framework.
