More specifically it is an improvement over the application for patent filed by Henry A. WVise Wood on December 3, 1926, Serial No. 152,402, in which a' half speed deck is shown placed directly behind a full speed press or deck and in line with it. i
The principal objects of this invention are to provide an arrangement of the half speed deck and supplyrolls in such a way as to enablethe half speed web to be fed in at any desired point between any of-the full speed webs of a multiple newspaper printing press; to so arrange the parts that the reel for the half speed paper rolls. will not take up any additional space, and to provide improvements in the way of leading the half speed .web into association with the full speed webs and into the folder.
Other objects and advantages of themvention will appear hereinafter.

Referring first to Fig. 1, a pair of decks of alarge printingpress is shown, involving a series offull speed lower decks 10. and
full speed upper decks 11. The lower decks take their supply of-paper from a corresponding number of reels 12below, and the upper decks'take their supply from a corresponding series of reels 13 above. The details of the parts that have just been referred to will not be described further, only enough of them being-illustrated to. show their posi-' tions with respect toeach other and their relationship to the present invention.

is capable of taking the full speed webs from one or more of the upper and lower decks. This folder is arranged between two of the lower decks in the form shown, but it can be arranged in some other convenient place and is not a part of this invention.
It will be noticed that near two. of the upper decks 11 we have shown a half'speed printing deck 15. This is shown as located on the same level'as the several'upper decks. It receives its web w from a reel 16: which is located on the reels 13, but at the operated by separate gears 17 and 18' on their respective shafts, which are centered on suits able supports axially in alignment with each other. Reels having three rolls are illus. trated for the purpose of convenience, and each reel is operatedindependently of the others.

the main shaft of the press. Although the connections are not shown, it is intended, of course, that they shall be provided with clutches or other means for connecting them with, and disconnecting them from, said main shaft.
It will be seen in the first place that these half speed decks are out of alignment in both directions with the ordinary full speed decks. They are readily accessible and are not in the way of access to the usual decks with which presses of this kind are provided. They are mounted on the frame 20 of the machine, and although theyproject out at the side, they do not take up any floorspace.
An important feature of the invention consists in the location of the reels 16 in axial alignment with some of the reels 13, as stated above. This results in an economy in space atthe top or at the bottom, if it is desired to place them there. They do not project out any farther into the :room than the reels 13 with their rolls and occupy a space between two reels 13 which otherwise is vacant. We
have shown two of these decks 15, but, of
course, are not limited to that number as .a single deck located between the two full speeddecks would be a practical construction.
The web to is fed through the deck 15 and perfected and then turned over two turning bars 21. This-brings the web to into alignment with the webs WV coming from certain of the press units or decks 10 and 11. In this case three .of these webs W are shown as oooperating with the small Web w, and the latter web is fed between a couple of cutting cylinders 22 and then led in over Various guide rolls between two of the webs W.
The web to is associated with the webs W in the manner shown in Fig. 3, and if desired, the mechanism illustrated in the said application of Henry A. Wise Wood can be used in connection therewith. The associated webs whether two, three, four, or any other number, are then brought over the drag roll 23 and then into the former of the folder 14.
It will be seen that by locating the half speed deck and its supply reel out of line with the main portion of the press, and in fact with the adjacent full speed decks, the half speed web can be fed in, not only at the point shown in Fig. 1, but between any of the full speed webs adjacent or near thereto. This also permits of 'an-economical arrangement of the paper reels obtained from the placing of each half speed reel 16 in line with one of the full speed reels, so that it takes up no space that is otherwise occupied for any useful purpose,and does not add to the length or width of the machine itself. 7 I
Although we have illustrated and described only a single form of the invention and shown only asingle relative location of the parts, we are aware of the fact that modifications can be made in the location and arrangement, and especially in the types of the half speed decks and reels, without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore we do not wish to be limited in these respects, but what we do claim is 1. In a printing press, the combination with a full speed web printing deck or unit, of a" half speed web printing deck located adjacent to the full speed deck and parallel thereto but out of 'line'with it laterally and longitudinally.
2. In a printing press, the combination with a full speed printing deck or unit and a reel for supplying the web of paper thereto, of a half speed deck located adjacent to the full speed deck but out of line with it laterally, and a reel for supplying the half speed deck located in axial alignment with the first named reel. 7
3. In a printing press, the combination with a full speed printing deck .orunit and a reel-forsupplying the ,web of paper thereto, ofa half speed deck located adjacent to the full speed deck but out of line with it longitudinally, and a reel for the half speed deck located in axial, alignment with the reel for supplying the full speed deck.
4. In a printing press, the combination with lower deck and upper deck, both full speed decks, one over the other and reels for supplying said decks with webs located substantially vertically in line with the decks, of a half speed press located out of line with the regular run of the press, means for supplying the half speed deck with a web, and means for, guiding the half speed web between the webs from thexupper and lower decks to a folder.
5. In a printing press, the combination with lower deck and upper deck, one over the other, of a half speed press located out of line with the regular run of the press, turning bars for shifting the position of the half-speed web over into alignment with the full speed webs from the upper and lower decks, and means for guiding the half speed web between the webs from the upper and lower decks to the drag-roll of a folder. 7 6. In a printing press, the combination with lower deck and upper deck both full speed decks, one over the other, of a half speed press located out of line with the regular run of the press, turning bars for shifting the position of the half-speed web over into alignment with the full speed webs from the upper and lower decks and between them, means for cutting the half speed web after it is turned, and means for guiding the half speed web between thewebs from the upper and lower decks to the drag roll of a folder.
7. In a printing press, the combination with pairs of decks comprising lower decks with their printing cylinders opposite each other in the press and substantially in alignment, and upper decks arranged adjacent each other and above the lower decks, and reels for supplying the upper and lower decks, of a pair of half speed decks located at one deck level and having their outer ends at a distance apart less than the distance between the two decks.
8. In a printing press, the combination with two pairs of decks comprising two lower decks with their printing cylinders opposite each other in the press and substantially in alignment, and two upper decks arranged adjacent each other and above the lower decks, and reels at the top and bottoin of the press for supplying respectively the upper and lower decks and in alignment therewith, of a pair of half speed decks located at one deck level and having their outer ends at a distance apart less than the dis tance between the two decks, and reels for supplying the half speed decks with a web of paper located in alignment with the two reels for supplying one of the full speed decks.
9. In a web supplying means for a printing press, the combination with a reel for supporting rolls for supplying the web to a printing press deck, and means for operating it, of a second reel having means for supporting a series of rolls for a half speed deck, said second reel being located axially in alignment with the first named reel, and independent means for operating the second reel.
