Description

Nov. 8, 1932.
J. R. O'BRIEN ROAD MARKER Filed Aug. 10, 1928 %mes %21 772 BY a NVENTOR Patented Nov. 8, 1932 UNITED. S' T ATES JAMES naYMoND O'BRIEN, or oHioAGo, ILLINOIS,
'ro RUBBER rnonuc'rs coaroraron, or novm, DELAwABn-y i nom) m m, 'I i This invention relates to improvements in road markers particularly adapted, though not necessarily limited in its use, as a marker or signal for traflic; trian, and` one of the objects of the sameis to provide an improved marker having a body portion adapted to rest upon the surface of a pavement and having improved means connected therewith and depending therefrom which impales the pavement and forms an anchor for securing the marker in position.
A further object is to provide an improved marker of this character having a cap or cover adapted to be placed upon the exposed portion of the marker and which cap or cover is adapted to be readily removed when desired, thereby adapting the same to be inter changed with another cap or cover.
A further object is to provide an improved marker of this character embodying a disc like body portion which rests upon and is secured against the surface of the pavement a cap or cover of resilient material 'for and the exposed portion of the body.
A further object is to provide an improved marker of this character having a body portion and a removable cap or cover for the exposed portion of the body, the edge of the covering being clamped between the lower surface of the body portion of the marker and the adjacent surface of the pavement.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will ap ear, the invention consists in the features o novelty in substantially the constructiom*eombination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the acccmpanying drawing illustrating this invention, and in which Figure 1 isa top plan View of a marker of this character eonstructed in accordance with the principles of this invention.. i
`Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view-of the' ca 01' COVE?.
igure 3 is a vertical sectional View of the marker proper.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates a body portion either vehicle or pedesformation having a convexed upper surface 11 and a concaved portion 12 in the'lowerg tion 13 will proj ect ASSIGNOR, LIBY MESNE assa'g mms Y surface of the body and which concaved porepending from the body portion, and lospaced for a co'nsiderable distance cated preferably centrally thereof is an ex-' V 'tension 13 of anydesired diameter and configuration in cross section, the lower extremity 14 thereof being pointed to facilitate the driving or forcing of the portion 13 into a. pavement.'
Extending from the depending portioi 13 f' and arranged in any suitable manner thereon j i are upwardly projecting pointed formations' 15 which serve as a means for asssting anchoring the device to the pavement. The numeral 16 designates a hollow cap or cover of any terial which will withstand considerable wear and abrasion and at the same time is adapted to be easily stretched so that the opening 17 therefn may be placed over the head or body 11 of the marker, cap to be removed when worn and a new one substituted therefor without removing the marker entirely from the pavement.
The cap is provided with an `opening 17 through one wall thereof located preferably centrally of the wall and the opening is of a diameter considerably less than the internal diameter of the cap and also considerably less thanthe diameter of the head or body portion. I
The cap is adapted to be placed upon the body portion 10 by stretching the same thereover so that the' body portion 10. will be h'oused within the cap and the depending porthrough the opening 17. The peripheral edge of the opening 17 is face of the head or bod 10. Itdesired there mayh suitable material preferably resilient, such as rubber or any other elastic ma-.`
thereby adapting the e.: a shouli y dered portion 19 on the lower surface of the head or body 10 within the circumferential recess 12 which is of an external diameter only slightly less than the diameter of the o enng 17 so that when the ca or cover is p aced n position upon the bo 10 the enarged portion 18 will be seate within the recess or concaved portion 12 while the shouldered ortion 19 will project into and substantia ly fill the opening 17.
With this improved constructionit will be manifest that when the marker with the cap or cover the'eon is secured to the pavement so that the lower face of the body 10 will rest against the surface of the pavement, the edges of the cap or cover 16 which enconpass the opening 17 will be clamped between the lower surface of the body 10 and the up er surface of the avenet.
{the provsion o the convexed surface 11 t e surface of the cap or cover will alwa s remain clean and will shed the elements, an by the provision of the removable ca or cover it is possible to remove the same an to interchange it with another cap or cover.
When it is desired to remove the cap or cover 16 it is not necessary to entirely remove the marker from the pavement as it may be raised suificiently to allow the removal of the cap and the replacing of another cap thereon.
While the preferred form of the invention has been herein shown and described, it is tobe understood that various changes may be' made in the details: of Construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
What is claimed as new is 2- 1. A road marker comprising a body portion adapted to rest against the surface of a avement, means depending below the body or securing the same to the pavement, a hollow resilient cap removably Secured to and housing said body, said cap having an opening in one side thereof adapted to be stretched and through which opening said securing means projects, the cap being enlarged along the peripheral edge of said opening and an annularrecess in the lower face of said body portion for receiving said enla'ged edge of 4 the cap.
2. A road marker comprising a' body porthe central portion thereof for receiving said thickened edge.
3. A road marker comprising a disc shaped body portion adapted to rest a ainst the surface of the pavenent, means or anchoring the body to the pavement, a hollow resilient cap removably secured to and closel fitting said body, the lower face of said bo y being provded with a rcess extending thereabout and spaced a 'consderable distance from the periphery of the body, the peripheral edge of said opening in the cap entering the said recess. E
4. As an article of manufacture for u. e with a disc shaped road marker, a hollow i silient cap comparatively thin with respectt its diameter, one of the lar er walls having an opening therethrough o substantial size but of a dameter consderably less than the diameter of the cap, the peripheral edge of sad'opening being thickened. i
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, on this 2nd day of April, A. D. 1928.
JAMES RAYMOND o BRIEN.
