Description

Nov. 1, 1932. D. e. SMELLIE SUCTION CLEANER AGITATOR- Filed Nov. 6. 1929 06723? 2072416! 6 @welfi- Patented Nov. 1 1932" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
DONALD e. SMELLIE, or can-row, omo, nssmuon TO THE noovnn comm, A
- conromrron or orno SUCTION CLEANER AGITATOB Application filed November 6, 1929. Serial N0. 405,092.
The present invention relates to suction cleaners and more. particularly to suction cleaner agitators of the rotary type. The invention has for its object the provision of an 5 "agitator for a suction cleaner which is of simple construction-and which may be economi calIy manufactured; the provision of an agitator constructed in a new and'novel manner. Other and more specific objects will appear from a consideration of the following specification and the drawing annexed thereto.
Referring now to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side view of an agitator constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a cross section upon the line 22 of Figure 1; I
Figure 3 is a cross section upon the line 33 of Figure 1;
Fi re 4 is a cross section upon the line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a modified embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 6 is a cross section upon the line 66 of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a view in perspective of a further modification of the present invention.
Referring now to Figures 1 to 4 in particular, a preferred embodiment of the present an invention is disclosed and comprises an agitator having end plates 1 and 2 carried at the ends of the web 3, End plates 1 and 2 are secured in any suitable manner as by welding. Web 3, as disclosed in Figures 2, 3 and 4. is 3 an elongated plate of relatively narrow width at its center 4, but with thickened, and rounded edges forming beater bars 5, 5. The member 1s warped in the sense of being twisted or folded, throughout its length so that the edges extending substantially through an angle of 180 circumferentially. In order that the agitator maybe driven by the motor ofthe suc- 5, 5 describe helices of opposite angularity' trude beyond the circumference of the plate 2. Stub-shafts 7 and 8 are provided upon the end plates 1 and 2 respectively, which are adapted to be positioned within suitable bearing mountings in order that the agitator may -be rotatably supported within the nozzle of a suction cleaner. The particular manner in which the agitator is supported in the nozzle forms no part of the present invention.
Referring now to Figures 5 and 6 in particular, a modified embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in which the smooth contour of the warped plate 3 is interrupted between its ends by the presence of a section of reduced width which is adapted to receive a pulley indicated by the reference character 9. Pulley 9 comprises two half- sections 10 and 11 having inner faces '12 and 13 which conform .to the sides of the plate 3. The outer surfaces of the .half- sections 10 and 11 are semi-circular and form, when positioned upon the agitator with the projecting portions, 14, 14 and 15, 15 overlying the edges of the reduced section of the web 3, a circular pulley. Securing screws 16, 16 are provided which pass from section 10, where their heads are positioned below" the surface of the pulley in recesses 17, 17, through the web 3 and into. threaded seats 18, 18 in the half-section 11. In this embodig ment as the agitator is driven by a pulley positioned at the center thereof the end plates 1 and 2 may be made identical and the recessed portion 6 of end plate 2, shown in the preferred embodiment, is unnecessary. The 5 present embodiment has the advantage that it may be used in suction cleaners in which the driving belt is positioned in the center of the cleaner. I
Referring now to Figure 7 a modification 9o .of the present invention is disclosed in which bly and may be made of bakelite or any s uitable'moldable material. The diameter of the cylindrical body is substantially equal to the diameter of end plates 1 and 2, so that in 1n the completed form only the rounded beating edges 5, 5 of the web 3 are visible between a the plates 1 and 2, the remainder of the web agitator and the agitator is revolved at high speed. The suction in the cleaner nozzle lifts the surface covering undergoing cleaning into contact with the revolving agitator and the rounded edges 5, 5 function as beater bars to dislodge the embedded foreign matter by impaction.
The cleaning action of the present agitator is that characteristic of the usual positive agitator and no invention is claimed therein but what is claimed as the applicants invention is an improved and simplified agitator construction which is characterized by simplicity, durability and efiiciency as set forth in the following claims.
I claim:
1. A suction cleaner agitator comprising spaced end members, means to rotatably support said end members and means maintain- -ing said end members in fixed relative relation. comprising a plate rigidly attached thereto the edges of which form beater elements.
2. A suction cleaner agitator comprising spaced end plates, means to rotatably support said end plates and means maintaining said end plates in fixed relative relation comprising a folded web rigidly attached to said end plates, the edges of said web being at equal radial distances from the common axis of p the end plates said edges extendi g in curves l and forming beater elements.
An agitator for suction prlslng a plate folded in opposite directions at its opposite ends, the edges of the plate between their ends forming-oppositely advancing helices at a constant radial distance from the major axis of the plate, the said edges being rounded and forming beater elements, supporting means at theends of said plate, and means connected to said plate to receive a rotating force.
4. An agitator for suction cleaners comprising a web having rounded edges, 9. cylindrical body partially encasing said web with the rounded edges extending therefrom and means to rotatably support said agitator.
.5. An agitator for suction cleaners comcleaners can? prising a warped web having, rounded edges forming beater elements, a cylindrical body partially encasing said web with the rounded edges extending therefrom, means to rotatably support said agitator and means secured to the web whereby the web may be rotated. 6. An agitator for suction cleaners comprising a web having rounded edges, said ,web
being folded so that said rounded edges de scribe helices having opposite angularity, a cylindrical body partially encasing said web with the rounded edges extending therefrom, means to rotatably support said body, and means secured to the web whereby it may be rotated. v
7 An agitator for suction cleaners comprising a web having spaced rounded edges,
an elongated body partially encasing saidcenter thereof and connected thereto to receive a rotating force.
9. .A suctioncleaner agitator comprising a warped plate the edges of WhlCh extend at a constant distance from and describe helices about the major axis of the agitator and form beater elements, and means to rotatably support said plate. v
