In the drawing, 10 denotes a flue pipe from a furnace F. Adapted to be mounted on said pipe 10 is my heating device which may comprise .a main casting 11 of brass or any other 9 suitable metal. The said casting is provided with a central opening 12 the diameter of which is approximately equal to that of the flue pipe. Formed around said central opening is a concentric fluid compartment 13 which has a horizontal annular partition 13 arranged therein which divides the said compartment into two separate chambers A and B. Also formed in said compartment is a vertical partition 18 A suitable opening 13 is provided in partition 13 on one side of Qli the partition 13 An inlet 13 is pnorided in the Inner chamberA. on the opposi e side Oi said partition 13 as said; opening 13 Similarly. an outlet 13 is provided for the pper chamber .Bon theopposite side of, said pantition 1:3 ot-said 0peningl3. Thus fluid ntitl ng: inlet 13ft flows around. chamber. A until; it reaches partition 13?:wheneupon it. passes up\ through opening,13 into cham; ber. B; and around through chamberB in the. opposite direction to the direction, of:- flow, in chamben A until it reaches thepartition 1-33; whereupon it passes on. through outlet Eiuitably spaced; from. the, outer wall of; up said; compartment 13 'as by. means "of'sp'acers lebis a jacket" l5 which maybe integrally formed; with the previous elements i f desiredi.

Suitably arranged in the collar 17 are pivoted dampers 21 operable from the outside by means of handles 21. When the said dampers are on the horizontal position shown they tend to slow up the passage of the flue gas through the heater and thereby cause the gases to give off more of their heat and consequently raise the temperature of the heated fluid in chambers A and B.
The temperature may further be regulated by the shutter-like members 18, for by increasing or decreasing the passage of the flue gas between acket 15 and compartment 18, correspondingly more or less heating of the fluid in chambers A and B will result.
In order to increase the capacity of my heater I may employ the modification of Figs. 4: and 5. In this modification in addition to the structure provided in the first modification, I provide an additional concentrio compartment 22 spaced from compartment 13 and which divided into two chambers C and D by a horizontal partition 22" A vertical partition 22 similar to partition 13 and for the same purpose is provided for this compartment. An opening 22 is provided in partition 22 on one side of partition 22 An inlet 22 to chamber D is provided on the opposite side of partition 22 as said opening 22 An outlet 22 is provided for chamber C which is also on the opposite side of partition 22 from said opening 22 and said outlet 22 is joined to outlet 13 of chamber B, by pipe 23. Inlet 22 is joined to the inlet 13 of chamber A by a pipe 23'.
The fluid enters through pipe 23 part thereof flowing into chamber D and the balance into chamber A. The fluid in each of said chambers flows around the said chambers, up through the respective openings 13 and 22 around the said chambers B and C in direction opposite to the flow in chambers A and D and out through the respective outlets 13 and 22 and thence through the common pipe 23. It will be seen that in eflect the two compartmentsare in parallel arrangement relative to the fluid flow. Part of the fluid passing through one compartment and the balance through the other.
, In this modification a floor 24: is provided for the space E between the compartments 22 and 13,[and aaplurality of holes 2 1 are provided in said floor. Mounted below said floor is a slidable annular ring 25 also provided with a plurality of holes 25 which may be caused to register with holes 24 by rotation of said ring 25. To so rotate said ring a barn dle 26 fastened thereto and projecting outwardly through slot 26 in my device is provided. This means is provided for limiting the flow of flue gases through the space between two compartments 13 and 22 and thereby affording means for regulating the tem perature of the fluid heated.
In both devices if air instead of water is to be heated, the size of the fluid compartments may be increased.
In all of my modifications if desired the outer surfaces may be covered with heat insulating material in well known manner.
My invention may be modified in various other ways without departing from the spirit 7 thereof and I do not wish to be limited to the details shown and described.
lVhat I claim is 1. A fluid heater adapted to utilize waste gases of a furnace or the like comprising a casing having a hollow center portion, a partitioned compartment about said hollow center portion, a second concentric partitioned compartment about said first named compartment and spaced therefrom, fluid being adapted to flow through said two compartments, a damper located at the bottom of said hollow center portion for controlling the flow of gas therethrough and a second damper in the space between'said two compartments whereby the temperature of the fluid flowing in said compartments may be controlled.
2. A fluid heater adapted to utilize waste gases from a furnace or the like, comprising a casting having a hollow center portion, a compartment about said center portion, a second compartment spaced from said first named compartment, inlet and outlet means for each of said compartments, a horizontal and vertical partition in each of said compartments dividing each of the latter into two chambers, said partitions having openings whereby fluid may flow through from one to the other of the respective chambers, a damper in said central portion for controlling the flow of gas therethrough, a damper in said'space between said two compartments for controlling the flow of gas therethrough whereby the temperature of the fluid flowing in said compartments may be regulated, and means for mounting the said heater in a waste gas pipe.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
