and susceptible of cheap manufacture.
With this object in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawing. Actual reduction to practice, however, may
dictate certain changes or alterations in the present embodiment and the right is claimed to make any which fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view of a. gas gun constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the carrier sleeve.
Figure 4 is another elevational view of the same sleeve but looking in a direction at right angles to that in which Figure 3 is viewed.
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of the carrier sleeve.
Figure 6 is an edge elevational view of one of the pawls.
Figure 6 is a front elevational view of the pawl.
Figure 7 is a top plan view of the palm rest.
Figure 8 is an elevational view of the same. Figure 9 is an elevational view of the firing p Threadingly connected with the upper end of the breech 1 is the barrel 2, the former being reduced in diameter where the threads are formed to provide a shoulder against which the barrel 2 may abut. The barrel 2 is undercutat the upper end of the breech, as indicated at 2 to provide a seat for the lower end of the shell when in position, so that the latter may be effectively retained in place in the barrel.
Serial No. 580,447.
Slidably mounted on the breech is a carrier sleeve 3 which on the bottom end is formed with a crosshead 3 disposed within the breech below the stop disk 3". The breech is formed with slots 8 to serve as clearance slots for the crosshead, as well as guides for the latter, since the crosshead is carried by the sleeve exterior to the breech.
In the lower end of the breech is inserted the palm rest 4 having diametrically disposed lateral extensions 4*. This rest is designed to be seated in the palm in the operation of the device and interior to the breech is formed with a conical depression 4 which functions to release the pawls 6 from the firing pin 5 in the operation of the device. The firing pin 5 is slidably mounted in the breech and carries the collar 5 between which and the stop disk 3", the spring 7 is compressed.
A second spring 8 is carried in the breech and compressed between the crosshead and the upper end of the palm rest 4.
The sleeve 3 is formed with diametrically disposed finger rests 3 so that when the palm rest is disposed in the palm of the hand, certain of the fingers may be disposed on the rest 3 and the sleeve toward the palm rest. 7
The firing pin is reduced in diameter as indicated at 5 to provide a shoulder directly behind a conical nose 5.
The pawls 6 are two in number and are pivotally mounted in the crosshead at intermediate points in their lengths. The nose portions are yieldingly impelled toward each other by reason of a spring 11 disposed between the tail extensions of the two and seated on tits 11.
A blind set screw 10 threaded through the wall of the breech 1, enters the stop disk and eifects afixed attachment between the latter and the breech. The head of this set screw falls within the inner periphery of the sleeve 3 so that it may not interfere with free sliding movement of the latter.
In the operation of the device the barrel 2 is detached and a shell inserted from the threaded end until the heel portion of the shell engages the seat 2. When the barrel is threaded onto the breech the shell is then 3 thus moved down retained in'position. The spring 7 tends norinally to keep the firing pin'at the barrel end "of the breech, while the spring 8 serves to keep the sleeve 8 in its elevated position,
when the noses of the awls 6 will engage the shoulder at the base end of the conical nose 5' 'of the firing pin. Disposing the palm :nal-ly thenoses are withdrawn from the shoulder of the firing pin and its spring 5 will function to drive it against the shell mounted in the barrel which results in the explosion of the shell with the desired result.
The invention having been described, what is claimedasnew and useful is:
I Adevice of the kind indicated comprising abarrel and-connected breech, a firing pin disposed-in the breech and spring impelled toward the rear end of the barrel, a 'sleeve'slidably mounted on the breech and havingpawls engageable with the firing pin, and apawl tripping device at that end of the breech remote from the barrel and functioning 'to disengage the pawl from; the firing pi'n'whenthe sleeve is moved a sufficient distance down the breech, the sleeve being spring impelled in a direction away from the pawl tripping device. 7 2. and -apawl tripping device atthat end of the breech remote from the barrel and'functioning to disengage the pawl from the firing pin when the sleeve is moved a sufficient distance down the breech, the sleeve having a crosshead interior to the breech and the pawls beingjpivotally mounted in the crossheadfor engagement with the firing pin on diametrically opposite sides. 7
