rarest series HENDRIK STUKART, OF LA FORTE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO U. S. SLICING MACHINE INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA BREAD SLICIN G MACHINE Application filed January 30, 1925. Serial No. 5,681.
This invention relates to bread slicing machines similar to that shown in my prior application, Serial No. 683,547, filed December 23,1923.
The invention has for its object the provision ofa bread slicer which shall be of im proved construction and operation, and in which a more direct drive is provided than that shown in my prior application, and in which improved means is provided for feeding the bread to the slicing knife;
The invention is exemplified in the com bination and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the following specification, and it is more particularly pointed out in 'the appended claims.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a front elevation, with parts in section, showing one embodiment of the present invention Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. l.
The
slicing machine comprises a front by rods 12 and 13 and a sleeve 14. A bread trough or slideway 15 extends from the rear to the front bracket and is supported by a bar 16 connected to the brackets at their ends. A shaft 17 is enclosed in the sleeve14 and journaled in the brackets. A drive wheel 18 is mounted on the rear end of the shaft 17 and a yoke 19 is secured to the forward end of the shaft. which is j ournaled on a sleeve 21 secured to the bracket 10 in spaced relation but in axial alinement with the bearing for the front end of the shaft a bearing 22 having eccentric bushings 23 therein in mounted, knife 25 fixed to the rear end thereof and a sprocket wheel 26 is formed on the spindle adjacent the rear face of the slicing knife.
The bearing 22 isprovided with a'lock bolt 27 for holding the eccentric bushings 23 in adjusted positions. By releasing the bolt 27 and shifting the bushings 23 the axis of The yoke 19 carries an arm 20 i 17. The arm 20 is provided with which a spindle 2 4 is rot'atably The spindle 24 carries a slicing the spindle 24 may be shifted to adjust the tension in the sprocket chain passing over the sprocket wheel 26. A second sprocket 28 is fixed to a spindle 29 extending through the sleeve 21 and rotatably mounted therein. A hand crank30 is fixed to the forward end of the spindle 2 9 and is provided with a stop 31 by means of which the hand crank may held against rotation. This will lock the sprocket wheel 28 in fixed position so that when the yoke 19 is rotated by the shaft 17 the sprocket chain connecting the wheels-26 and 28 will impart a rotary movement tov the knife 25 in addition to i s revolution about the axis of the shaft 17. A lock pin 32 is provided on the bracket llforlocking the hand wheel 18 against rotation.. It will be apparent that by causing the lock pin 32 to engage an opening 33 in' the drive wheel 18 the arm 20 may be locked in its uppermost position. The handle 34 for the hand crank 30 may then be rotated into the broken line positions shown in Fig. 1 which will release the hand crank and permit rotation of the sprocket Y Wheel 28 thereby. .This rotation will drive the knife 25 on a fixed axis.
A removable cover 36 is provided for the upper portion of the casing which encloses the knife 25. By removing the cover 36 the sharpener 37 may be brought into ment with the edge ofthe knife forsharpening the knifewhile being rotated by the hand crank. 'A second opening 38 is provided in the drive wheel 18 diametrically opposite the opening 33. This will permit the knife to belocked in its lowermost position tofacilitate cleanin i The loaf of bread 39 or other article to be sliced is held by a follower 40 having, a front plate 41 against which the rear end of the loaf is placed. A tooth carrier 43 ispivotally mounted at 44 on the follower 40 and is provided with a. plurality of curved teeth 45 which project through. slots 46 in the upper edge'of the front plate 41. A spring 47 normally urges the teeth 45 into their operative position' to engage the loaf 39, as shown in F ig. 1. Since the teeth are curved, the spring 47"1noves the teeth. in a direction not only toward the portion of the clamp upon which engageloaf is held. A hand piece 48 extends upas viewed in Fig. 3.
naled 1n the end brackets 10 and 11 and 1s,
wardly from the tooth carrier 43 in position to be engaged by the thumb of the operator when it is desired to release the loaf or to return the follower to its initial position at the rear end of the bread slide 15. The follower 10 is supported on a bracket d9 secured by screws to sleeve 51 slidably mounted on he rod 12. A handle52 is secured to the sleeve 51 for moving the sleeve 51 along the rod. A bell crank lever 53 is pi votallyconnected at 54 to the sleeve 51 and is provided with a downwardly extending fork 55 which engages a pin 56 inthe end of a slide rod 5?.
A housing 58 extends downwardly from the sleeve 51 for supporting the slide rod 57 and a spring 59 is mounted in the housing 58 for normally urging the rod 57 to theleft,
A feedscrew 60 is ourintermittently rotated for feeding the follower ldtoward the slicing knife. The rod 57 is provided with a toothed end 61 for engaging the threads on the screw 60. A bracket 62extends inwardly from the housing 58 and is provided with a frictional contact member 63 arranged in position to engage the lower face of the bar 16. The member 63 may be made of fibre or other suitable ma terial.
' It will be apparent that the spring pressure on the teeth 45 in forcing the teeth into the loaf will tend to lift the follower 40 away from the runway 15. The contact member 63 will counteract this force and retain the follower. in its proper-position on the runway. The contact member 63 also provides frictional engagement to prevent overthrow of he feeding mechanism at the end of a feed-.
ing operation, hus insuring uniformity in the slices produced.
The screw 60 is provided with a one-way drive (i l at its rear end to which a link 65 is pivotally connected. The upper end of the link 65 is pivoted at 66 to a sleeve 67 supported on a rod 68. The rod 68 is secured to a bracket pivoted at 70 on the rear frame member 11. The bracket 69is provided with a cam roller 71 which engages a cam 72 on the drive wheel 18. It will be noted from Fig. 1 that the cam roller 71 is disposed within acontinuous circular flange 73 on the drive wheel 18v so that if the cam shouldbe thrown outwardly by centrifugal action it will engage the smooth inner surface of the continuous flange 7 3 and there will be no danger of any ofthe parts jamming to stop the machine or break the mechanism. Such action on the part oft-he cam roller 71 is normally prevented, however, by the spring 74 which holds the cam roller 71 against the drive surface of the cam 72. It will be seen that at each oscillation of the linkv 64 the screw 60 will be rotated to feed the follower 10 toward the slicing knife. The amount of rotation may be regulated by the sleeve 67 along the rod 68.
As will be seen from Fig. 2, the front portion of the rear bracket 11 is left, entirely open so as to provide space for the operators hand when the follower l0 is moved backwardly to its rearmost position. This permits the follower tobe slid to the right, as viewed in Fig. 1, a sufiicient amount to utilize substantially the entire length of the slideway 15 for long loaves of bread. When the follower is movedto its rearmost position the toothed member 61 will be brought intoregistration withthe endv portion ofthe bearing 7 5 in which the rear end of. the
screw 601s journaled. This, will prevent the: toothed member 61 from engaging the threads of the screw so that rotation of. the
drive wheeli18' will not. feed the followerfon: allowing opportunity to secure.
wardly, thus 7 a new loaf. against theface of the plate ll,
Ifit should desired to adjust the parts so that the. follower will immediately begin its forward movement a stop bar 7 6 is provided which may beswung into position to engage the end of the rod 12 so that the sleeve 51 Wlll engage position that the toothed member 61- willmi ss the bearing 7 5 and engage the threads of the.
