Description

Oct. 25, 1932. E. J. MclLvRlED MILL CONSTRUCTION F'iled Maron 27, 1929 INVENTOR.
ATTORNEYJ.
Patented @ein 25, 1932 Application filed March 2*?, 1929.
The present invention relates to mills tor use in the preparation ot rubber stocks, and particularly tothe improvement ot the usual breaking cap incorporated in such mills.
It is the general practice in the construction of mills for this purpose to provide the adjustable journals or housings of one orn the mill rolls with a rangible connection between the housing and the ournal or boli, so that it some foreign substance gets between the rolls, the connection will break and thereby injury to the expensive rolls will be avoided. This connection is usually in the Vform of a cap or disk mounted on the journal or box against which bears the adjusting screw, the disk being capable or fracture under excessive stress from the mill rolls.
In Jformer constructions the replacement ot a broken cap or disk has been an operation requiring considerable work and consequently has consumed valuable time both in making therepairs and in the loss of operating time on the mill. One of the obj ects ot the present invention is to provide a new and improved arrangement for housing the breaking disk, whereby it is readily accessible and easily and quickly replaced. f
In the present mill construction, it a workmans arm is caught in the mill rolls, it requires a considerable time to separate the rolls to free him. `With the improved disk mounting shown and described herein, the mill rolls may be separated without delay by operation of the adjusting screw. ln the mill roll constructions prior to the present construction the onlyvway in which the mill rolls can be separated is by wedging them apart, this operation consuming Vmuch time in an emergency.
These and other objects will be apparent from a consideration of the detailed consti uction of the new form of mill roll, it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limited to a copying oi the details ot the invention, but may be embodied in other and modiiied forms within the scope of the invention as set forth in the claims. lt will also be understood that the invention may be ernbodied in similar locations and for machines similar to the rubber mill, although its imme- Serial Iao. 356,335.
diate application, as will be described herein, is directed to that art.
ln the dra-wing,
Tiligure l is a fragmentary view of one side of a rubber mill showing the invention incorporated therein, it being understood that the mill construction is of the usual or standard form and is not further illustrated 'for that reason;
Figurev 2 is an enlarged sectional view through the breaking disk mounting, being taken on the line 2--9I of Figure 3;
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure l is a section on the line ll-l oi' F igure 3.
ln the drawing, l represents the mill housing, and@ and 3 the two mill rolls, th `iormer being the stationary roll and the latter the adrjusta le or movable roll.` The stationary roll is mounted in lined bearing boxes 5 secured to the mill roll housing. The roll 8 is mounted in sliding boxes or ournals 6 movable in ways 7 in the housing.
rlhe mill rolls are held at the required distance apart by means of adjusting screws 8 which are mounted in the housing and bear upon the slidinc journal 6 through the medium of the breaking cap to be described. The inner end of the screw 8 is provided with an enlarged head or flange l0.
The breaking disk or cap is illustrated at l2, being located in a seat il formed on the iront or forwardface of a breaking disk housing l5, and covering a central opening 16 which is ot suiiicient diameter to receive the end of the screw 8 in event of breaking of the disk.
rllhe adjacent side of the housing may be provided with a recess 18 registering with the opening 16. llhe breaking disk is retained in the seat l-l by a plate 20 tting within the seat and having an opening surrounding the screw and having a slot 22 opening therein to rovide a groove adapted to receive a removable shoe Qe. rlhe inner end of the shoe is forked as shown at 25 to pass on either side oi the screw and over the ange l0. The outer end of the shoe is provided with an opening 26 by which the shoe may be removed. The plate 20 is secured to the breaking disk housing by screws 27 which enter the housing l5 and hold the breaking disk iirmly across the opening in the housing so that its. edges are clamped, and a clean breaking or shearing action is assured. rlhe breaking disk is then held like a drum head and will shear positively, not'bending or dishing as would be the case were the edges of the disk unconined. The complete assembly is secured to the box 6 by screws 28 which pass through both 2O and lo and enter the housing.
In the event of'breakage of the disk l2 by shearing of the disk by the adjusting screw, the shoe 24 is removed and the adjusting screw 8 run back to such position that, after the screws 28 are removed, the entire breaking disk assembly, including the parts 15 and 20, may be removed from the adjustable housing and the disk is replaced. It it is desired to separate the rolls in an emergency, such as may occur if a man is caught between the rolls, the adjusting screw is run back 7ithout first removing the shoe. As the shoe is over vthe flange I0, the whole of the adjustable housing is moved outwardly thereby separating the rolls quickly and easily.
The advantages of the invention are readily apparent to those familiar with this art, and it will be evident that one skilled in the art may embody the invention in other forms andy modiiications without departing from the essential features of 'the invention as set forth in the cl ims hereto appended.
