Description

c. E. L. HOLMES.
CURRY-COMB. I
No. 188,294. Patented MarchlS, 1877.
CHARLES E. L. HOLMES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURRY-COMBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,294, dated March 13, 1877; application filed v January 2, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. L.HOLMES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have in vented Improvements in Curry-Combs, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is acurry-comb constructed to afford a secure attachment of the handle to the body or frame, to permit the frame or rest and handle to be readily detached, and to connect the comb-bars firmly to the knocker-strips.
1n the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of a curry-comb made in accordance with my invention, the handle and connecting-frame being detached; Fig. 2, an inverted plan of'the body of the comb; Fig. 3, a perspective view, showing the construction and mode of connection of the combbars and knocker-strips, and Fig. 4 a modification.
A is the body; B, the side handle, and O the frame or back grasping device, connecting the body and side handle, and consisting, in the present. instance, of four elastic Wires, at, having the ends bent to form parallel tongues c 0. Each comb'bar b has at each end an oblong slot or opening, 0, adapted to a lug, 1;, cast or otherwise formed on the under side of the knocker-strip d, the said lug being longest in the direction transverse to the strip, and, when the slot is open at the end, being larger at one end than the other, so as to retain the bar longitudinally, while the spreading of its head in riveting holds the bar closely and securely against the strip.
Owing to the elongated form of the lugs they not only retain the bars, as stated, but further impart rigidity to the entire body of the comb, as the bars can have no play round the lugs, but are maintained rigidly at a right angle to the knocker-strips. The ends of the strips project beyond the comb bars, and are bent over to form U-shaped loops m, forming, with the flanges of the outer comb-bars, sockets n for the reception of the tongues 0 c of the frame 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Owing to the elasticity or play of the rods a. a. they may be retracted sufficiently to pass them into the space between the ends of the side strips to a position opposite the sockets n n, when they will spring into the latter, and secure the frame and body together.
When necessary to remove the handle, the rods may be retracted and withdrawn in like manner, thus separating the parts and affording facility for packing and transportation.
It will be apparent that the handle and 'frame may be detachably connected to the body in a different manner, as by forming the ends of the rods into loops, through which set-screws may be passed into the body.
To impart additional strength, transverse wire braces s 8 may be passed through the flanges of the bars, as shown, and to prevent the accidental detachment of the front rods from their sockets lugs It may be arranged on the body of the comb to prevent the inward movement of the front bars, which are first inserted in the sockets after turning the frame outward, and then brought between the lugs and the loops m by turning it back to its proper position.
The rear bars or rods may be connected rigidly to the side handle and to the body, and the cross-bars only may be detachable, if desired.
Without limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of devices shown, I claiml. The combination of the body A, side handle B, and frame 0, secured detachably to the body, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the handle, frame G, and loops m, forming, with the comb-bars, sockets n for the reception of the tongues of the frame, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of thecomb-bars and side plates or strips (1, having U-shaped ends arranged on the sides of the bars, substantially as described.
4.. The side strips (1, having elongated lugs 7;, and the comb-bars with slots 0 adapted to the lugs on the frame or side strips, as set forth.
5. The combination of the body, the handle B, secured rigidly thereto, and the detachable cross-bars, substantially as set forth.
6. A curry-comb knocker-bar, having U- shaped ends, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
G. E. L. HOLMES.
