UNITED STATES PATENT s. JOHNSON AND L. JOHNSON, Jn, or AVUN, new YonK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 18,813, dated December S. 1857.
' and LEICESTER J onNsoN, Jr., of Avon, in thecounty of Livingston and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reapers or Grain-Harvesters; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to theannexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- 1 Figure l is a perspective view, Fig. II a longitudinal elevation, Fig. III a plan, of the gear-t'rmne; Fig. IV, a section, Fig. V dctached view, of rake-clutch.
The nat ore of our invention consists of a device i'or obviating side draft, consisting of a third wheel placed in aposition to bear in part the weight of the'gearing, thereby counteracting the tendency of the platform to occasion side draft. and the plac ng of movable blocks at the sides of the pole for varying the line of draft.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
To arectangular frame of any suitable form, having the finger-bar attached to the back end, as seen in Fig. III, we attach thethird wheel,O, on the side of the frame opposite the platform, with its center nearly over the end of the finger-bar and hack of the drive-wheel, as seen in Fig. II, so that lines connecting the three wheels A, B, and U will form a triangle,A being in front, so that the line connecting its center with the center of 0 shall form an angle of nearly forty-live degrees with the frame. By placingthe gearing on the outer side of the drive-wheel its weight is brought to bear on the wheel O,thereby counteracting the side draft occasioned by the platform.
To the front of the frame we attach a draftpole, R, and at the side or sides of the pole, at the place of its attachment to the frame, we place a movable block or blocks, c 'v, by moving which we change the position of the pole and vary the line of draftat pleasure.
It will be observed that the framing both of the gear and main frame projects in tron t, and ati'ords lateral guides or supports to the adjustable draft-pole R, which is rendered adj ustable in the following manner A sufiticient space is allowed between the two center pieces of the frame to admit the draft-pole and the movable blocksc v. By removing the bolt to and changing the relative positions of the draftpole and blocks the line of draft maybe varied at pleasure.
, What we clairnas our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- Thearrangementofthe outer wheel, 0, drivewheel A, and. inner wheel, B, in combination with the adjustable draft-pole B and movable blocks 1; c, the whole being arranged for joint operation substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
