Description

J. B. P. MOHAN.
CAR-COUPLING. No.188,065 Patented March 6,1877.
jNVENTOB: i v
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICEQ JOHN B. P. MOHANfOF DRYDEN, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD HIS RIGHT TO THOMAS D. M. MOHAN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,065, dated March 6, 1877 application filed November 18, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN B. P. MOHAN, of Dryden, Sibley county, Minnesota, have invented an Improvement in Oar-Oouplings, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l of the drawing is a top View; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents a draw-head, having the cavity a, in which is pivoted at b the lever D. To the front end of this lever is pivoted a pin, 0, which passes through vertical holes of the draw-head, as usual, and to the rear is attached a spring, D, that forces down said hinder end as soon as a sliding spring-bolt, E, is withdrawn by the movement of the lug on rocking shaft F. This key or shaft F acts by the lug or pin eon a collar, 0, of the springbolt E.
The mode of operation is as follows: The link B passes into draw head under and against the rear of the lever D, lifting the latter against the spring until its recess d receives the spring-bolt E, which then holds the lever in a horizontal position against the tension of spring D. As soon as the shaft or key F is turned sufficiently to force back the bolt E, the spring D forces down the rear and up the front end of lever D, thus uncoupling the cars.
What I claim is- The combination, with lever D, having pivoted front pin 0 and fulcrum b in cavity of draw-head, of the spring D and locking-bolt E, arranged to operate as shown and described.
JOHN B. P. MOHAN.
