WILLIAM H. H. SOHOLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAIL-JOINTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,031, dated March 6, 1877; application filed August 19, 1876.
D To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. H. SCHO- LEY, of Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Connecting Street- Railroad Rails, of which the following is a specification The nature of the present invention consists in an extension on the under side of the sill-plate, which fits into a mortise in the sill, and is provided with git-seats, under which gihs on keys catch and hold the rails fast to the sillplate by means of ordinary spikes put through the rails, the sill-plates, and sills, passing through the same holes as the keys, and hold the latter in place, as the Whole is hereinafter fully shown and described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the sill of a street-railroad, the rails thereon, and my improved connection. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same parts on line Z, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an inverted view of the connection Fig. 4, a top view of a sill, with the rails and connections removed, to show the mortise.
A B represent an ordinary sill and rail of a street-railroad, to which my connecting device is attached. D represents the sillplate or coupling, which in my construction is provided With an extension, 0, fitting closely into a mortise, J, in the sill A, and prevents the plate D from having any lateral motion. The ends L of this extension 0 are notched out to correspond with a cross-section of the spikes shown at S, and longitudinally through the extension is formed an opening or space, I, Fig. 1. Keys E are formed with gibs on their lower ends, and are put through holes in the rails B, the gibs looking into the said open space. Ordinary spikes S are then placed into the same holes as the keys, and driven into the sill A, and the rails and sill-plate will be held fast together, and the rails will be effectually secured to the sill-plate, forming a perfect coupling. Iron is to be used for the parts B D S E (J.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The sill-plate D, extended down into a mortise, J, at O in the sill, and provided with a longitudinal open space, I, and with notches L, in combination with gibs on keys E, and rails 15, as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM H. H. SGHOLEY.
