EVERETT R. HUME, or wE'arnEitroitiJ, OKLAHOMA AMUSEMENT nE'vIoE .This invention relates to amusement de- 7 vices and has for an object the provision of a device which includes a number of horizontally and circularly movable seats mounted 6 for swinging movement, together with means whereby the occupants of certain of the seats may manually operate the device and thus provide an amusement device which may be operated without cost for power.
10 7 Another object of the invention is the provision of novel means for adjusting the op- ,erating means to suit the occupants of the seats, so that the device may be conveniently operated by persons of all ages.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and 30 pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side view.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken through the standard, parts being broken away and shown in elevation.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 30 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figures 5 and 6 are sectional views taken respectively on the lines 5-5 and 6-6 of Figure 4.
. Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmentary view 35 partly in section and illustrating the operating gears.
Figure 8 is a View showing the bearing rings in separated relation.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a standard which may be of suitable construction, but which is shown as comprising a lower tubular section 11 and an upper 45 tubular section 12, the latter telescoping within the former.
Mount-ed upon the upper end of the section 11 and surrounding the section 12 is a bearing member 13 which supports an annulus 14 through the medium of anti-friction devices .on anti-friction bearings 23 the standard.
Application filed December 22, 1930. Serial No. 504,127.
15. Extending radially from the annulus 14 are horizontally disposed arms 16, and swingingly secured to the outer ends of these arms in eyes 17 are supporting arms 18 forseats 19. These seats maybe of any desired construction and size, and are swingingly supported at the lower ends of the arms 18.
Braces 20 connect the seats and the arms 16.
Secured to the outer ends of the arms 16 are the outer ends of inclined braces 21. The
inner ends of these bracesare connected to .an annulus 22 which surrounds the upper which. operates supported by a section of the standard and bearing member 24 which is stationarywith 1 bottom plate-25 is secured to the annulus 22, while a similar plate-26' is securedto the annulus 14.
Extending outwardlyfrom the standard 10 are shafts 27. The inner ends of these shafts are supported upon spindles 28 which extend from bearing rin s 29 and '30, surrounding the standard. fine of the spindles 28 is carried by the lower ring 29 while the other spindleis carried by the ring 80. These spindles form bearings for the inner ends of the shafts 27 and secured upon the inner ends of these shafts are engage a ring gear 32. .andis stationary withrespect to the standard; A-collar 33which is secured'to the standard acts to hold the parts in place. In addition the upper bearing ring has extendpinions 31 which This gear surrounds ing therefrom angle brackets 34 to which is secured ja cap 35, the latter forming a part of a gear housing, whose base isshown at 36. Th s gear housing is provided with} and as these shafts are adapted to move about the standard, the housing will also move. g The outer ends of the shafts 27 have extending therefrom sleeves 3,8, and extending from these sleeves is which is mounted for rotation in bearings 40. These bearings are supported upon spaced bars 41 Whose opposite ends are secured to the supporting'means for certain of the seats. The shaft extension 39 carries spaced crank arms 42 which, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, are positioned in advance of certain openings 37 for the passage of the shafts 27, I
a shaft extension 39 of the seats so that the occupants of these seats may rotate the shafts after the manner of foot pedals. Rotation of .the shafts will thus cause the pinions 31 to travel around the ring gear 32 and operate thedevice.
The bearings 40 are adjustable upon the bars 41 and for this purpose the bearings are provided with wedge-shaped extensions 43 which are removably positioned within spaced notches or depressions 44 provided along the upper edges of the bars 41. This will permit of positioning the bearings with respect to the seats and in accordance with thelength of the legs of the occupants of the seat. As this adjustment of the hearings will change the position of the shafts 27 with respect to the standard, this change of position is compensated for by the adjustability of the spindles 28 about the standard. Links or stirrups 45 which extend downwardly from the bearings 40 act to prevent acci-' dental disengagementof the extensions 43 from the notches 44. i
The shafts 27 are connected with the shaft extensions 39 through the medium of clutch members 46 and 47 the former being carried by the-inner end of the shaft extension 39, while the latter is slidably'and nonrotatably mounted upon the adjacent portion of the shaft 27. Theadjacent faces of the clutch members 46 and 47 are provided with ratchet teeth 48, whereby the shaft extensions 39 may rotate independently of the shafts 27' in one direction, but will be held against independent rotation in an opposite direction. A spring 49 which is interposed between the clutch member 47 and the plug ;at-the outer ends of the shafts in advance of certain of the seats, whereby the shafts may be rotated to operate the device.
2. In an amusement device, a vertically sup-ported standard, arms extending radially therefrom and having their inner ends connected for movement about the standard, seats swinginglysupported at the outer ends of the arms, horizontal shafts extending outwardly from the standard, rings rotatably supported upon the standard, means carried by the rings and engaging" the inner ends of Y the shafts to rotatably support'the same, a
stationary ring gear mounted upon the standard, pinions secured to the shafts and engaging the gear, bearings for the outer ends of the shafts, and crank arms at the'outer ends of the shafts in advance of certain of the seats, whereby the shafts may be rotated to operate the device.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. EVERETT R. HUME.
50 in the end of the sleeve 37 acts to yieldingly hold the clutch member '47 engaged with the clutch member 46. When the shafts are operated to move the device in one direction, the shaft extensions 39 will be locked to the shafts 27, but movement of the shafts 27 in an opposite direction will not afiect the shaft extensions due to the ratchet clutch just described. Danger of injury to the operators or riders from this cause will thus be prevented. a
The 1nvent1on is susceptible of various changes in 1ts form, proportlons and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as'properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. In an amusement device, a vertically supported standard, arms extending radially from the standard and having their inner ends connected for movement about the s standard, seats swingingly supported at the outer ends of the arms, braces for said arms,
horizontal shafts extending outwardly from the standard, a stationary ring gear mounted upon the standard, pinions secured to the 5 shafts and engaging the gear, bearings for i
