IMPROVEMENT IN MAIL-BAGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,862, dal ed February 27,1877; application filed January 27, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIG R. HUNT, of Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Mail-Bags and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a front view of my mail-bag, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the outer flap. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section through line y y, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through line as :r.
This invention consists in providing mailbags with an additional outer flap and two side flaps, all of said flaps being constructed with metal'rimmed slots or long eyelets, as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, A designates a mail-bag, which has near its mouth two corresponding opposite metal-rimmed lougitudinal slots or elongated eyelets, A A One side of said bag is prolonged beyond the mouth thereof, forming a flap, B. Said flap is adapted to be folded over the mouth of said bag, and is provided on its inner side with a staple, B, that passes through said slots or long eyelets A A when the said flap is thus folded.
To the opposite side of said bag A is secured a larger outer auxiliary safety-flap, 0, having near its end a rimmed slot or eyelet, 0 similar to A A in size and form.
D D designate two side wings or flaps formed in one piece with said outer flap O,
and arranged on opposite sides thereof, adapted to fold between the outer and inner flaps. Said side flaps are provided near their ends with metal-rimmed slots or long eyelets D D, corresponding in shape and size to the others hereinbefore described. Said side flaps fold around the upper end of said bag, and said slots or eyelets D D slip over staple B, which projects through them. Outer flap O is then folded over the end of the bag A until staple B passes through slot or long eyelet A padlock, O is then attached, in the usual manner, to the projecting end of said staple, and the fastening is complete.
The outer flap O and side flap's D D make it impossible to reach the inside of the mailbag, except by removing padlock O or cutting through the leather. Said outer flap, with said side flaps, may be attached to any mailbag by riveting, or in any convenient way, and the device will then be substantially as above described.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a mail-bag, having a closing-flap, B, of an auxiliary safety outer flap, 0, provided with intermediate side wings or flaps D D, adapted to fold between the outer and inner flaps, all secured in place by a single fastening device, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
F. R. HUNT.
