Referring now in detail to the drawing, reference character 1 indicates a cane car having doors 2 pivotally mounted adjacent the upper side of the body and forming theside walls thereof. Adjacent the lower edges of the doors are door holding means, preferably in the form of a lever, mounted in suitable journals 4. secured to the body. This door holding means comprises a bar 5 having offset portions 6 which, upon rotation of the bar, are adapted to moveinto andout of engagement with the lower edge of the door. On one end of the bar 5 is mounted an operating 1 arm 7, in angular relation thereto, which provides a means of rotating the bar. Mounted on the arm 7 is a link member S which is adapted to pass through an openin 9 1n one of the upright rigid portions of thedoody and be engaged by a pivotally mounted member 10 secured to the body. By referring to Figs. 1 and 3 it will be observed that when the link 8 and member 10 .are in engagement, the operating arm 7 is retained in position so W as to bring the offset portions 6 of the bar 5 into engagement with the lower edge of the door 2, thereby preventing outward movement of the door. I
Referring now to Fig. 3 of the drawing it will be observed that the member 10 is pivotally mounted adjacent its upper end on brackets 11 secured to the body and that the horizontal plane of the engagement of the hook portion 12 of the member 10 with the link 8 is below a similar plane of the pin 13 securing the member 10 to the brackets. Referring now to the drawing, Fig. 1 shows mounting to the brackets 11 and this handle assists, by the force of gravity, in holding the members 8 and 10 in engagement. 5
Assuming the side doors of the body to have been opened to discharge the lading, the operation of locking the doors in closed position is as follows: the operator, after closing the doors, grasps the operating arm 7, moving it 7 upwardly towards the car body into the position shown in Fig. 1 after which the link 8 is inserted through the opening 9 in the car body and the member 10 is manipulated so as to cause the hook portion 12 to engage with the link member 8. r The link 8 and hook 12 will now automatically remainin engagement with each other as previously explained. To release the operating arm, the operator grasps the handle 14 of the member 10, moving it in the'direction of the arrow of Fig. 3, so as to rotate the hook portion of the member 10 downward and out of engagement with the link8 after which the operating arm 7 can be rotated outwardly and downwardly to release the doors for opening.
Should the operating arm 7 become distorted during operation of the car, the mechanism will still be operable since the arm 7 is of suficient length to be sprung towards the car body and the link 8 can'berotated into position to enter the slot 9 of the body.
From the above it is apparent that I have provided a locking means comprising asmall number of parts-which are readily engageable with each'other and that the one movement of the handle 14 of the member 10releases theoperating arm to permit the door holding means to be moved free of the car doors.
.Having thus described the invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. In a cane car having an outwardly swinging door, a lever journaled to the body adjacent the free edge of said door, offset portions on said lever for engaging with the door to hold the door in closed position, and
locking means for maintaining the lever in door-holding position, said means comprising a hill: mounted on said lever, a link engaging 7 look member mounted on the body and manually operable to engage with said link when the lever is moved to door-holding position: 2. In a cane car having an outwardly swinging door, a lever j ournaled to the body adjacent the free edge of said door, ofl'set portions on said lever for engaging with the door to hold the door in closed position, and
locking means for maintaining the lever in door holding position, said means comprising readily engageable mutually supporting members pivotally mounted on the body and on said lever.

The combination in a cane car having upright side members, of doors pivotally mounted at the sides of the car, a bar mounted in journals at the sides of the car and e having offset portions for holding the doors I door, an angularly disposed operatingarm on said door holding means, a link on said operating arm and a link engaging member pivoted to the car, any door releasing movement of the operating arm, while the said link and member arein engagement, tending to rotate said member in a link engaging direction. In a cane car, in combination, an out wardly swinging side door pivoted to the car body, suitable door holding means journaled to said body, an operating arm for said means and pivotally mounted members on said operating arm and body for retaining the door holding means in position, said members when in engagement mutually supporting each other against accidental separation.

9. In a cane car in combination, an outwardly swinging side door, door holding means j ournaled on the car adjacent the free end of said door and movable into engagement with the door, an angularly disposed operating arm on said door holding means,
a bifurcatedmember pivotally mounted on said arm, a member pivotally mounted on said body adapted to engage said arm member within said bifurcations.
