Description
` Sept. 20, 1932. R. VON FROMMR SLIDING COVER FOR L.JTOIMUIIG FREARMS Filed oct. 27. 19:50
Patented sept. 2o, 1932 RUDOLF VON FROMMER, OF BUDAPEST, HUNGARY` VVSll'iIDIll'Gr COVER FOR AUTOMATIC FIREARMS Application led October 27, 1930, Serial No. 491,571, and in Hungary October 29, 1929.
ing handle, making it in such a manner ol- Y :lowing the movements of the breech bolt.
`In the accompanying drawing one preferred form of the invention is shown by way `of example. Fig. 1 is a side elevation of one part of a gun provided with the sliding cover in. its
closed position.
j Fig. 2 is a top plane view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line III-.III of Fig. 1. s Fig. ais a cross sectional view taken on line IV-IV of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation' of the sliding cover.` i i Fig Gis a top plane view of the sliding cover and Y Fig. 7 is a crosssection of the latter. j The sliding cover is composed of a jacket 1 shaped from a thin metal sheet according to `thecross section of the breech casing 2, and is adapted tobe shifted in the lon tiudinal direction. In its foremost positiont e jacket 1 covers the ejecting opening of the gun 935 whereas it uncovers the same in its rearmost position. The cover 1 is provided with an edge 3 guided in a recess 4L of the casing 2.
\ O11 the right side of the casing there is arranged the operating handle 6 which can be f 4. pushed in a well known manner backwards and forwards whereby itis swung also in a j known manner around its pivot 7 in order j to facilitate the manual operation of the gun.
To the end of allowing the shifting of the operating handle a slot 9 is applied in the casing (see Fig. 3).i In Figs. 1 and 2 the slot 9,
the slot 9.' This slot is completely covered by the extension 10.4 The jacket 1 ismconnected with the pivot of the operating handle 6 so as to follow the breech bolt when the latter is being shifted, without hindering 55 the swinging movement of the handle. This connection is effected for instance by means of a jaw 11 of the sliding cover, this jaw having bores 12 adapted to serve as bearings for the pivot 7. `When the handle is in its foremost position "i and the breech is closed, the ejecting opening as Well as the slot 9 are completely covered.
In order to prevent hurting of the hand of the shooter when closing or opening the breech bolt respectively when the cover slides for- Wards or backwards in oase of automatic operation of the fire arm, a projection 8 may be provided on the gun-stock such projection keeping the lingersof the shooter away from the cover. This projection is arranged under the path of the cover, so that a touching of the cover with the lingers can be avoided. Instead of the projection 8 integral with the gun-stock, a separate part of the same form made of wood or iron can be secured on the gun-stock.
I claim:
1. In an automatic fire arm of the type having a breech bolt, a pivoted operating handle `so on the breech bolt, a breech casing provided with a cartridge shell ejecting opening and with a slit enabling the operating handle to slide to and fro, a sliding cover covering the ejecting cartridge opening of the casing and the slit for the operating handle, and means for connecting said sliding cover with the pvot of said operating handle so that it takes part in the movement of the breech bolt.
2. In an automatic lire arm, a pivotally mounted operating handle, a sliding cover covering the ej ecting opening of the cartridge cases and theslit for the operating handle, means for connecting said sliding cover With the pivot of saidioperating handle and a projection of the gunstock arranged under the path of the cover and adapted to prevent touching of the cover by the lingers.
3. In an automatic fire arm, a pivotally mounted operating handle, a sliding cover i
