UNITED STATES THOMAS PERKES, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
BREECH=LOADING FIREHARIVI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,457, dated November 6, 1888.
Application filed April 9, 1888. Serial No. 270,078. (No model.) Patented in England August 20,1886,No. 10,679.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, THOMAS Pnnxns, asubject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at No. 70 Osnaburgh Street, Regents Park, London, England, gun-maker, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ejecting Mechanism for Breeeh-Loading Small Fire-Arms, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 10,679, bearing date August 20, 1886,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ejecting mechanism for breech-loading small lire-arms, and has for its object to facilitate the extraction of the exploded cartridge cases from the barrels of guns, rides, and other similar breech-loading small re-arms.
This invention consists in the novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the ejecting mechanism, portions of the gun being shown in section to expose said mechanism, the breech being closed and the tumbler down. Fig. 2 is a similar view to Fig. 1; but it shows the breech partly open and the tumbler raised,with the ejector ready to operate and at the point of being released.
The barrel of the gun has an ejectingcam, V1, pivoted to it and operated by a cooking rod or slide, 2, which slides back and forth in the breech-block,and is provided with the nose or extension 3, for engaging with the said ejecting-cam. The ejecting-cam is pivoted to the gun, so that when the tumbler is being cocked the projection or arm 8 on the cam 1 comes in Contact with the nose-piece or extension ou the cocking-rod. A spring, 4, is secured to the gun-barrel and operates the ejector-cam suddenly when the breech has been opened to its widest extent, thereby releasing the said cam from the cocking-rod and causing it to operate the extractor 5, which is supported in a groove in the barrel, and eject the exploded cartridge. A stud or projection, 6, is formed on the tumbler, which projection fits into a notch or recess, 7, in the cooking-slide and holds the latter in a neutral position when the tumbler is at full-cock. When the gun has been discharged and the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, the breech is opened, thereby thrusting the tumbler into fulicock as the barrel is tilted. The rear end of the cocking-rod now being interlocked with the tumbler, as shown in Fig. 2, the gun may be opened and closed freely Afor loading or unloading.
In a cartridge-ejector, the combination,with the extractor 5, supported by the barrel, of the cam 1, pivoted to the barrel for striking the end of the ejector, the spring 4, for suddenly operating said cam and ejector when the barrel is fully depressed, the cooking-rod 2, sliding inthe breech-block and provided with a nose at one end operatively connected with a projection on the said cam and having a notch, 7, at its other end, and the tumbler provided with a projection, 6, engaging with said notch, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
