Description

sept. 13, 1932. E. J. THURBER 1,877,087
TIMBER SHAPE F'ile'd Jan. 16. 1950 INVENTOR Ezl amd. Thurber' ATTORNEY Patented Sept. I3, 1932 UNTED STATES EZRA J. THUEBER, or SEATTLE, WASHINGTON TIMBER sHArE Application filed. January 16, kSerial No. 421,123;
.The invention is a timber for use in building construction by which solid laminated walls may be formed with grooves on t-he sides for holding plaster on the inside and stucco on the outside. l
The object of the invention is to provide a single unit for forming walls which eliminates laths and siding.
Another object of the invention is to provide a 2 X 4 with grooves in the sides for holding plaster and stucco .or the like.
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide Ventilating slots in a solid wall formed by 2 X 4 timbers laminated.
And a still further obj ect of the invention is to provide a 2 X 4 which is of such a shape that it may be used to form a solid laminated wall with `means for .holding plaster and stucco in order to provide a simple and ecoi 2O nomical construction.
With these ends in view the invention embodies, a piece of timber with upwardly sloping tongues at both sides and oppositely arranged ventilating slots in the central part thereof.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein;
Figure l is a view showing a portion of a wall constructed with timber of this particular shape.
Figure 2 is a cross section through one of the pieces of timber.
In the drawing the device is shown as rit would be made wherein, numeral 1 indicates the piece of timber, numeral 2 the tongues at the sides, and numeral 3 the longitudinal ventilating slots.
The timber may be made as shown in Figure 2 or of any other suitable design and when in use it is positioned with the tongues sloping upward. In the design shown the timber is made with a 2 X 4, however, it is understood that a timber of any other size or proportion may be used as the heighth in relation to the width may be changed as may be desired.
The timber is coated on both sides with a coat of tar or creosote to positivelywaterproof 50 both sides, as indicated by the numeral 6.
ktongues 2 sloping upward. It will be ob- Vwhen constructing a wall one piece may be 'placed above another so that a laminated wall is obtained as shown in Figure l with the served that with the tongues on thel sides of the wall it will not be necessary to use lath, netting, or any other similar material to hold plaster-or stucco. The plaster as indicated by the numeral 4 is placed on the inside of the wall and the stucco, as indicated by the numeral 5 is placed on the outside. This will provide a solid wall and it will be appreciated that window and door frames may be framed into the wall as it is constructed so that the construction of the wall will be very simple and at the same time very inexpensive.
The Ventilating slots 3 are of a substantial width and are positioned comparatively close to the ends of the timber and it will be noted that they will insulate the central portion of the timber from the surfaces so that moisture on the surfaces will not penetrate to the interior, and these slots will also absorb eX- pansion and contraction in the central portion of the timber and thereby prevent cracking and distortion of the surfaces of the wall in which the timber is used.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim as new and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is
l. A timber shape consisting of a piece of timber having on the lateral sides thereof continuous upwardly inclined plaster holding tongues, and in the intermediate part thereof Ventilating openings adjacent the sides providing dead air spaces insulating the interior from moisture of the side surfaces and preventing expansion and contraction of the inff terior being transmitted to said side surfaces.
2. A timber shape consisting of a piece of timber having on the lateral sides thereof continuous upwardly inclined plaster holding tongues, and in the intermediate part thereof 5 Ventilating openings adjacent the sides penetrating comparatively through the timber from opposite sides thereof providing enclosed pockets insulating the interior from moisture of the side surfaces and preventing l0 expansion and contraction of the interior being transmitted to said side surfaces.
In testimony whereof he aliixes his signature. EZRA J; THURBER.
