KREBS, ASSIGNOR F ONE-FOURTH 'I'O ANNA KREBS, BOTH 0F CLINTON, IOWA DEMOUNTABIQYE RIM Application filed February 3, 1931. Serial No. 513,204.
vide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a
rim of this character embodying a novel con struction and arrangement of parts whereby same may be expeditiously collapsed to permit of the removal or mounting of a tire with a minimum of labor and without the necessity of special tools. 7
Other objects of the invention are to provide a demountable rim of the character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, eflicient and reliable in use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the- U accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein;
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a rim constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of the rim showing the hinged sections thereof swung inwardly as when removing or mounting a tire.
Figure 3 is a framentary view in section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 4 and showing the means of locking the swingable sections in closed position.
Figure 4: is a fragmentary view looking at the inner periphery of the ring showing the hinged sections, the locking means therefor and the means for hingedly connecting said sections to the main portion of the rim.
2 and 3 which are connected to the ends of the split section 1 are provided with transy verse slots in their web portions for the reception of the upturned end portions of the hing hooks 4 which are secured to the end portions of the split section 1 on the inner side of the web of said split section. As clear, ly seen in the drawings, the hinge hooks 4 project beyond the ends of the split section 1 for operative engagement with the swinging rim sections 2 and 3. c
Flexible retaining plates 5 are mounted on the outer side of the web portion of the split section 1 on the end portions of said split section. The plates .5 project beyond the ends of the split section 1 overthe adjacent end portions of the swinging sections 2 and 3 and have their projecting end portions resting on the upturned hook portions of the elements 4: when the swinging sections arein closed position, as illustrated to advantage in Figure 3 of the drawings. Rivets 6 are provided for securing the hinge hooks land the plates 5 in position on opposite sides of the web portion of the split rim section 1. It may be well to state that the plates 5- provide shields for preventing damage to the inner tube of the automobile tire by the joints between the split section 1 and the swinging sections 2 and 3. The plates 5 prevent the tube from being pinched when the sections 2 and 3 are swung to closed position. In addition to this function the plates 5 retain the sections 2 and 3 inposition on the hinge hooks 4 as will be obvious.
' The free end portion of the swinging rim section 3 has rigidly mounted on the inward side of its web portion a plate 7 having guide arms 8 formed integrally therewith and projecting beyond the free. end section 3. The
A keeper 10 is rigidly mounted on the inward side of the web portion of the swinging rim section 2 and projects beyond the free end of said section 2 and terminates in an upstanding lug 11 for disposition in the open ing 9 when the swinging sections are in closed position.
In use, when it is desired to break or collapse the rim, it is only necessary to exert pressure inwardly on the abutting free ends of the sections 2 and 3.
As the-sections 2 and 3 swing inwardly, the keeper 10 and the lug ll will be swung away from the section 3, the lug 11 being thereby withdrawn from the opening 9 in the section 3. After the tire has been mounted on the rim and it is desired to close the rim, this is accomplished by swinging the free end portions of the sections 2 and 3 into engagement with each other into which position the keeper 10 will extend between the guide arms 8. Outward pressure on the free ends of the sections 2 and 3 after being positicned will spread the split section 1 and the swinging sections 2 andB will snap to closed position, the lug l1 entering the openlng 9. This may be conveniently accomplished by disposing the rim with the sections 2 and 3 It is believed that the many advantages of v the demountable rim in accordance with this invention willbe readily understood, and alhoughthe preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be made which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
l/Vhat is claimed as new is:
A collapsible rim of the type which embodies a main rim section whose ends are spaced from each other, and swingable section hinged on each end of the main section, the free ends of the swingable sections being provided with means for connecting them in end to end engagement, hinge means for connecting said swingable sections to the main section comprising a transverse slot in the swingable section, a rigid latch member secured to the radially inward side of the end of the main rim section and projecting thereheyond, the latch member comprisin a wide flat plate having the free end. thereoI turned so as to project radially outwardly and engage in said transverse slot of the companion swingable section when they are assembled, and a spring plate on the radially outward side of the main rim section extended beyond the free end thereof, and means passing through said main rim section, the latch member and the spring plate for securing them in place, said spring plate being placed and proportioned so as to cause a snap action to take place when the swingable section is moved into and out of end to end engagement with the main rim section, and to bridge the joint between the last-mentioned sections and cover the projection of the latch member when the sections are in end to end engagement.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
