This invention relates to collapsible tire buildingforms. The general urpose of the invention is to rovide an improved collapsibletire buildmg form-especially of the drum type such as used for making tires by the pulley band method. 'Such drums are usually formed with considerably reduced bead seats at their ed es which renders it difiicult to obtain a su cient degree of collapsing, especially in the larger sizes of tires, to permit easy removal of the tires. The present invention, therefore, has particularly for its object the provision of a collapsible drum construction, the sections of which are capable of a comparatively great degree of collapsing movement.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a simple effective means in combination with a drum as described in the previous paragraph for collapsing and expanding the same.
The foregoing and other objects of the in vention are attained in the collapsible drum construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described below.- It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the s ecific form thereof shown and descr1 Of the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a drum embodying the invention, the collapsed condition thereof being indicated in dotted lines;
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure '1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10' designates a central member adapted to be secured to a shaft (not shown) of a tire buildmachine, said member being formed or provided with a suitablesupporting arm or spider 11 upon which a drum section 12 may be fixed thereon as by rings or bolts at 12, 12.
The drum comprises the section 12 and a plurality of sections 13 and 14 hinged thereto, three being preferred. Section 13 is designed as a ke section and may be hinged toone end 'of sectlon 12 by means, of hinge plates 15, 15 secured by pins or bolts 16, 16 to a lug 17 on the inner periphery of the drum, said hinge plates being pivoted on a pin or bolt 18 extended through a lug 19 on drum section 12. Atits free end section 13 is formed with an outer diagonal face 20 adapted to cooperate with an inner diagonal face 21 on the 'adjae cent free end of section 14 to complete the drum, the free end of key section 13 having a pair of spaced plates 21, 21 secured on the side of a lug 22 on the innerperiphery of the section and'formed with hooks 23, 23 extendingbeyond the free end ofsection 13 and adapted to embrace a lug 24 on the free end of section 13 and to hook onto a pin or stud 25 projecting from the sides of lug 24 to hold the free ends of sections 13 and 14 together whenthe drum is expanded to operative condition.
As appears from Figures 2 .and 3, the
spider 11 is so shaped as to ofi-set the drum respecting the central plate 10 whereby the hinged sections of the drum may be collapsed in the manner indicated in dotted lines in Figure l the key section moving across the axis of the drum in moving inwardly from its position in operative continuity with the other drum sections.
' For collapsing and expanding the drum a suitable contracting and expanding device is arranged to span the fixed section or its support and the key section, this device be ing preferably so arranged as to be connected to the section or its support on the opposite side of the axis of the drum from the key section.
' In its preferred form, the collapsing mechanism comprisesa lever 31 having a universal or knuckle jointed connection at 32 to a lug 33 on the inner periphery of the fixed section 12. The connection 32 may include a block 32 swiveled on lug 33 by a pin or bolt 32*, the lower end of lever 31 being hinged or pivoted on a pin or stud 32 in said block.
Lever 31 has pivotally connected thereto as at 34 one end of a pair of members 35, 356
providing a link which is connected at its other end to the inner periphery of section 13 by a universal or knuckle joint 36 similar to joint 32.
To collapse the drum, the lever 31 is pulled outwardly and downwardly which through link 35 swings section 13 inwardly until these parts assume the dotted line positions shown in Figure 1. Then section 14 may be pushed inwardly to the dotted line position thereof to complete collapsing of the core. In expanding, the core section 14 will be swun outwardly and lever 31 will be swung bac into the central opening of the drum.
Modifications of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is 1. A collapsible tire building form comprising a plurality of sections hinged together including an intermediate fixed section and means spanning the fixed section and a hinged section adapted to be contracted and expanded to collapse and expand said movable section, said means comprising a lever having a universal connection with the fixed section, a link pivoted at one end on the lever and having a universal connection at its other end to the movable section.
2. A collapsible tire building form comprising a plurality of sections hinged together including an intermediate fixed section and means spanning the fixed section and a hinged section adapted to be contracted and expanded to collapse and expand said movable section.
3. A collapsible tire building form comprising a plurality of sections hinged together, and means spanning certain of the hinged sections adapted to be contracted and expanded to collapse and expand said sections, said means comprising a lever having a universal connection with one of the sections, a link pivoted at one end on the lever and having a universal connection at its other end to another of the sections.
4. A collapsible tire building form comprising a plurality of sections hinged together, and means spanning certain of the hinged sections adapted to be contracted and expanded to collapse and expand said sections.
5. The combination with a collapsible tire building form including hinged sections, of means for collapsing said form connected between certain of said hinged sections, said means normally lying in the central opening of the form and adapted to be moved outwardly of said openingto collapse the form.
6. A collapsible tire building form comprising a bracket or spider for mounting said form on a shaft, thevouter portion of said bracket or spider being off-set from the central portion thereof so as to support the form thereon in such a way that the collapsing thereof will not be obstructed by said central portion, said form comprising an intermediate section fixed on said bracket or spider, a key section hinged on one end of said fixed section and a third section hinged upon the other end of said fixed section, said ke section and said third section adapted to collapse in overlapping relation, and means s anning the intermediate section and the ey section adapted to be contracted and expanded to collapse and expand the form, said means comprising a lever having a universal connection with the intermediate section and a link connected to the lever and having a universal connection with the key section.
7.,--A collapsible tire building form comprising a bracket or spider for mountin said form on a shaft, the outer portion 0 said bracket or spider being oif-set from the central portion thereof so as to support the form thereon in such a way that the collapsing thereof will not be obstructed by said central portion, said form comprising an intermediate section fixed on said bracket or spider, a key section hinged on one end of said fixed section and a third section hinged u on the other end of said fixed section, said ey section and said third section adapted to collapse in overlapping relation, and means spanning the intermediate section and the key section adapted to be contracted and expanded to collapse and expand the form.
8. A collapsible tire building form comprising a bracket or spider for mounting said form on a shaft, said form comprising an intermediate section fixed on said bracket or spider, a key section hinged on one end of said fixed section and a third section hinged upon the other end of said fixed section, said key section and said third section adapted to collapse in overlapping relation, and means spanning the intermediate section and the key section adapted to be contracted and expanded to collapse and expand the 'form.
