IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-SAFES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No 187,668, dated February 20, 1877; application filed November 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Lnwrs O. PARKER, of
Robinson, in the county of Brown and State co safe, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectioir al view of the same.
My invention has relation to safes intended for the preservation of tobacco, sugar, cake, and bread; and consists in the construction and arrangement of the following devices: a vessel, of suitable form and construction, is provided with a removable cover, either whole orin sections, hinged together, and fast ened by spring-bolts to the said vessel; a grate or hanging frame suspendedfrom said cover; and a pan to rest upon said grate or fastenings to contain water, all as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
, In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates a safe or vessel, of suitable construction, and B indicates the lid or cover thereto. This cover consists of two pieces, which are united by hinges 0., and provided with a projecting rim, 1), whereby they are supported upon the vessel A. One of the said pieces of the cover or lid may be made stationary by means of springbolts 0 engaging with the sockets a near the top of the safe, while the other piece is used as a door, and is preferably made to incline downward from the hinges to the front of the safe. From the stationary part of the cover depends a grate, D, which supports the pan E, having compartments (1. These compartments hold water, to produce vapor by evaporation.
The articles to be preserved may be put into suitable receptacles placedunder the pan E. The-edge of the cover B is provided with rubber packing, making the safe practically airtight, and preventing the escape of vapors or the entrance of ants or other insects.
The goods to be preserved are placed in receptacles under the pan E, or directly upon the bottom of the vessel A, or in any suitable vessel placed upon said bottom. I place water or other liquid, which, when the safe is closed, fills the same with its vapors, and keeps the articles therein in a state of humidity necessary to preserve the fresh appearance andflavor, or the consistency and granular structure of the same.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The safe A, having hinged cover B, provided with fastenings G, suspending devices D, evaporating-water pan E, rubber packing on edge of cover B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
