My present invention relates generally to I will now describe my arrangement for a combined artists kit box and easel, and carrying the paint board Iupon which the consists in the combinations and arrangesketching is being done from the cover memments of parts hereinafter described, and ber, with its upper surface upon which the more fully set forth in the accompanying sketching is being done either in this com- 55 claims. Inon inner plane of the cover member or rlhe invention has for its purpose to prothereabove so that the artist when using the vide a new and improved arrangement for brush, for example, will have free movement supporting a board upon which the sketch of the brush even beyond the limits ofthe lo is being made, and more particularly to the paint board. e0 embodiment of this arrangement as part of The side walls 18 and 19 are provided'with an artists kit. the opposed guiding and seating channels or For the attainment of this object and such grooves and 26 each opening inwardly other objects as may hereinafter appear or and upwardly and extending for the full l5 be pointed out, I have illustrated embodilength of the side walls. These channels or 65 ments of my invention in the drawings grooves are normally closed at the top by the wherein top wall 16, and always closed at the bottom Figure 1 is a perspective view of my inby the bottom wall 17 These channels or vention embodied in an artists kit showing grooves each presents a bottom seat 27, and the work panel supported in one position in an end abutment wall 28, the bottom seats full lines and another position in dotted 27 of the channels 25 and 26` being in the lines; same common plane and which will be here- Figure 2 is a face view of the cover mem'- inafter referred to as a seating plane Vof the ber showing the bottom container in section; sketching board, and the end guiding walls 25 Figure?) is a longitudinal section through 28 being in parallelism.
the artist kit in open position; p The 'upper end wall 16 is provided with F igure4 is a section taken on line 4 -4 0f the upstanding backing or abutment mem- Figure 3; and bers 29 (see Figure 3) and the bottom or Figure 5 shows a medieation. lower end wall 17 is similarly provided with Y Upon viewing Figure 3 of the drawings, it the upstanding backing supports 30. These .80 will be observed that the artist kit in which backing supports 29 and 30 are illustrated my invention is illustrated is embodied, is in the drawings as in the form of iJ-shapedY made up of the bottom container member 10 brads, although they can take any preferred to which is hinged the cover member 11 as or desired form, provided, however, they are by the hinges `12, vthe brace 13 serving to so constructed and positioned'asto present 85 secure the cover member in Open positionl ai; their-outer surfaces inthe seating plane i. e., predetermined inclinations or positions. same plane as that of the abutment seats or V'Ihebase member 10 is provided with com- Walls 27, andV which forms the plane of the partments for receiving the various linstrupaint bOaId Seat, LS Will ShOTlY be PODG 40 ments and has room immediately thereabove out. j f 90 for receiving the palette 14. The upper end wall 16'is pivoted to the My invention is illustratedand disclosed bwl Wall 15 aS Shown at 35, S0 that it can as embodied in the cover member of the artist swing from its normal full line position of kit. The cover member 11 is Vin the form of Figures 2 3, and 4 to its open position of a compartment, and is made up of a back 15, Figure 1. Y an upper end wall 16 and a lower end wall In VFigure 1, I show vthe top wall 16`a`s Y 17, and side walls 18 and 19. All of these thrown upwardly and out of the way." This walls have their upper surfaces in a common opens the channels 25, and 26 at the top, and plane which will be hereinafter referred to permits of the insertion of the paintboard'A- Y as the inner plane of the cover. f in the following manner. The'paint board is ,100
brought into registration with the channels 25 and 26 with the lower surface in registration with the opposed seats 27 and the sides of the paint board in abutting relation to the end walls 28 and the paint board can then move downwardly along the cover to its final position as shown in Figure 1. In this operation, it will be guided by the seats 27 and by the end walls 28 until it strikes the lower end member, 17 As it moves downwardlyV the board will position itself below or in back of the spring Clips 36 and 37 carried by the side walls 18 and 19, and which extend overI the grooves 25 and 26, and also in back of the spring clip 38 which is carried bythe bottomV y Tend wall 17. These spring clips 36, 37 and 38 i @will serve to holdV the board upon its seat. Y The boardf A; will be guided to a position VIn this manner, the board when in itslposition of'Figure 3 will rest at its sides upon the seats 27V and 'at its bottom against the brads `30, and at the topagainst the brads 29 and will be held from rising bythe clips 36, 37 and 38. The board or panel Awill be held stationary and will form a solid surface to paint against.l l.
The depth of the grooves 25 and 26 will be substantially'thesam'e as ythe thickness of the boardA, and the other dimensions of the board will Icorrespond to the channel thus formed therefore. This will bring the upper surface of the board A in the common plane of the outer surfaces of the side walls, and
the topA and bottom end walls ofthe cover member so that these surfaces will form, in fact, a continuation` of the top surface of the board A so that Vno impediment will be presented to the free sweep of the paint brush,
Vandfurthermore, tothe use of the entire surface of the board for sketching purpose.
. In this manner, the boardv A is supportedv and backed at variouspoints and is also held Ydown at other points so that the boardrwill be held down againstoutwardvbulging and n held flat against inward bulging.
For storage purposes, I show additionally the opposed sets of grooves 40 and 41 formed inthe inner faces of the side walls 18 and 19l in which paint boards can be receivedv for storage purposes, or even for painting pureo Y Y the board is not intended. In connection with poses where the use of the entire surface of 'Y these sets ofgrooves 40 and 41, it will be Vunderstood that the.conformationmthereof will. not onlyY seat the board, butwill also hold a board against any upward movement.
The spring clips 36, 37 and 38 are illustrated in the drawings as preferably so mounted as to permit their being moved out of their inoperative position into an operative one and for this purpose are each mounted upon pivots 39 about which the clips can be swung from their overhanging full line position to theirinoperative postion. For holding each of these clips in any position to which they may be moved, I may employ thel cumming friction teat 39 shown in Figure 3.
'My invention further contemplates an arrangement whereby the board instead of being positioned with its longer dimension horizontal as shown in Figure-1, can have its longer dimension positioned vertically,
and as shown by dotted lines in thefsame igurer of the drawing.` In this position, the
board A will be received', for example, in the i groove on the right and beneath the right spring clip'A 37 `and above the right brad 30 and beneath the lower clip 38, and forv pur-V posesV ofV still further securing theboard against movement when in this position, I if have provideda member-for engagingv'the left end of the board. This member is shown as in the form of the latch hook40 pivoted on the underneath surfaceof the upper end vwall`16, and limited in its swinging movement-inV a clock-wise'direct'ion, by the stop 42, so as to hold the latch in 'its extended position of Figure'l. The latch 40 is so positioned and dimensioned that, when4 in this extended position, it will present the open mouth 43l of its jaw, so that the left end of the board A can be received therewithin. It
will, ofcourse, be understood', thatwln this position also, the board. will be heldv in they y common vplane ofthe outer surfaces ofthe walls 17, 18 and 19, and that the wall 16 will be thrown' about its pivot to its position as shown in Figure 1. 'i i For securing a boardy upright and/at theY left, I may employ a hook45 positioned sim'- ilarly but oppositely to the hook-40 so that Y 'bottomA 10, infullregistration' with and within ther outlines ofthe chamberfin the bottom member 10. In .this manner, I attain the resultof enablinga ,painter-to close his kit box with the board'secured as in Figure Y -1 without smudging or smearing the partly completed painting-doneV on its outer surface. The artistg-therefore, need not wait Vuntil his painting V( lries before packing?upV and moving on. The clips 36, 37 and 88 serve additionally in this relationship.
In Figure 5 of the drawings, I show an alternative arrangement whereby I can attain the results referred to in the paragraph preceding. In this figure, the board A is received on the upper surfaces of the end walls 18 and 19 instead of on the seats 25 and 26 as shown in Figure 1. The clips 36 in this alternative form are secured to these upper surfaces as in Figure 1. lIhe free ends 37 of the clips are, however, bent into a higher plane as shown in the drawings so as to permit these free ends to engage over the ends of the board as in Figure 1. The chambered portion 11 of the bottom member 11 is made sufficiently large so as to receive therewithin the board A as well as the bent ends of the clips. Fi 1re 5.
