The object of the invention is to provide a cultivating hoe in which the cutting element is double edged so that both the forward and backward strokes of the operator may be equally effective; to provide a construction in which various angular positions with reference to the handle may be secured by the simple expedient of releasing a clamping mem her and making the adjustment, the desired adjustment being maintained with exceptional rigidity; to provide a construction which is adapted for easy removal of the cutting element; and to provide generally a device of this character which is of simple form and susceptible of cheap manufacture and low marketing cost.
With this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational View of a hoe constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view showing in dotted lines one of the adjusted positions.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on theplane indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
The invention comprises a cutting element in the form of a double edged blade with the extremities 11 bent at right angles to the body portion of the blade and secured respectively to the two arms 12. The arms 12 are of generally Z-shaped form, one terminal of each arm being secured to one of the angular portions 11 of the blade, rivets 14 being preferably used as the means of attachment. By riveting the blades to the arms 12, they and the blade become a unitary structure which is pivotally connected with the handle 15 by means of a pivot bolt 16 passing through the handle and through said terminal portions of the arm 12.
Links 16 are pivotally connected with the bolt engaging portions of the arm 12 and these links are provided with longitudinal slots 17 which slidably engage a bolt 18 carried by the handle. The head of the bolt engages one of the links 16 on the one side of the handle and a clamping nut 19 engages the other ofthe links, being'threadingly engaged with the bolt and being provided with a handle 20 to permit its being easily turned.
lVith the nut 19 loose, the links slide freely over thebolt 18 and the blade may be adj usted to different angular positions with reference to the handle because of the running engagement of the bolt 18 with the links by reason of the slots in the latter. When the desired adjustment has been obtained, the clamping nut is tightened and the cutting element is rigidly secured in the desired position with reference to the handle and by reason of this construction the same adjustments may be secured on opposite sides of the handle for the use of either cutting edge.
Because of the link connection by which the adjustment is maintained, undue strains will not tend to upset such adjustment, since such strains are not reflected in a torsional strain on a pivot bolt, as in conventional constructions, but as a compressive strain on the links. In the event that blade removals are required, it becomes only necessary to remove the rivets attaching the blades to the arms, when a new blade may be mounted and attached with new rivets.
The invention having been described what is claimed as new and useful is:
An implement comprising a reversible member, arms of generally Z-shaped form having certain terminals secured to said member, a handle on opposite sides of which the remaining terminals of the arms are positioned, a pivot bolt passing through the handle and through said remaining arm terminals to pivotally connect the latter with the handle for swinging movement of said member to opposite sides of the handle, links formed with longitudinal slots, said links having terminal pivotal connections with the handle engaging portions of the arms, a bolt passing through the handle back of said pivot bolt and also passing through the slots in the links and a clamping nut provided with an actuating handle, said nut being threadingly engaged with the last said bolt.
In testimony whereof he afiixes his sig- 7 nature.
