My invention .relates to sucker rod guides for preventing the sucker rods from being damaged as they are operated in oil well practice, and also to provide an expeditious means 5 for quickly attaching said guides to said rods and removing said `guides therefrom.
Devices vfor this purpose have heretofore been pro posedbut they have `ta' iled in practice because of the'difticulty had in placing them flo in position on the rods and also in removing them therefrom, said devices, being made .of wood, quickly becoming broken and hence i placed out ot commission in a very short time,

Describing my invention more in zdetail,`I provide an elongated, preferably'integral 55 body ,2 constructed ot suitable metal, suehas cast iron, provided with a central .-bo1e4,` opening into a slot (5 leading externally thereto, which bore is adapted to have positioned therein the sucker rod 8, shown in yfrag- `.0 mentary form in l `i g. 1, said rod being adapted vto be slipped into the body 2 through `the slot thus forming a quick `4means dorpositioning the guide upon said rod.

If-desired, the bodyof the key may be made of comparativelyrigid material while the extensions 24 are more or less flexible, as in practice preferred.
Then the device is placed in operative'position, the rod 8 is slipped into the body 2 through the slot 6 and the key inserted'inthe top thereof, the extensions24 Vbeing straight, enter the slots 14, and are driven" home with Ml a hammer or other implement, and when said extensions reach the slot extensions 16 they are bent outwardly, the taper of the key and said extensions thus forming an eiicient I' means for preventing said key from being forced out of place, but at the same time permitting its ready withdrawal, the device being quickly placed on the rod or removed therefrom when desired.
While I have thus described my invention with great particularity, it will be clear that it may be modied throughout a wide range. I accordingly do not propose to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, but reserve the right in practice to make all modifications thereof that fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention: 1. A sucker rod guide comprising a body l0 provided with an axial bore therethrough and a slot communicating with said bore and opening out through the side of said body, said body being also provided with a pair of grooves-juxtaposed to said slot, said grooves $5 each having an end extension directed outwardly to the outside of said body, and a key adapted to engage the sides of said slot and its ends the extensions of said grooves for detachably locking said body to said rod.
2. A device of the class described comprising an open-sided body provided with a through bore and a pair of grooves in said body, each of said grooves being tapered from one end to the other and provided with an olf-set portion whereby a locking key may be detachably held entirely within said grooves to lock said device in position.
3. A device of the class described comprising an open-sided body portion provided 0 with grooves, each having an off-set portion for receiving a locking key, said locking being accomplished by the bending of the lower portion of said key as it is forced within said grooves and held by said off-set portion.

A sucker rod spacer comprising a body provided with a through bore, and a pair of longitudinally tapered grooves, each having an o-set portion of substantial length at the end thereof, and a concavo-oonvex locking 50 key having a pair of longitudinally tape-red side flanges adapted to slide in said grooves, and a pair of end extensions, adapted to be bent when engaging said off-set portions, whereby said key may be held in locking en- -ga ement with said body.
