Application filed .Tune 5,
Our present invention has reference to oil Well drilling apparatus and is directed to a polish rod grip of a construction whereby one hand can easily, quickly and accurate y adjust the sucker rod to arrange the Working valve in proper spaced relation With respect to the standing valve in the Well.
To the attainmentI of the above broadly stated objectand many others Which will appear as the nature of the inventionis better understood, the improvement. consists in the novel construction, combination and operative association of parts, a satisfactoryembodiment of Which is illustrated by the drawings Which accompany and form part of this application.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement.
Figure 2 is a similar View on an enlarged scale With parts in section.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the sucker rod clamps.
In Figure 1 the Well casing is indicated by the numeral 1 and the sucker rod by the numeral 2. The polish rod is, of course, made up of any desired number of sections, the lower section carrying the Working valve. In oil Well pumping it is, ot' course, essential that the sucker rod be of such length thatthe traveling valve carried thereby Will not contact With the Working valve, and With the ordinary construction of sucker rods this is hard to accomplish. With our invention, it Will be noted as the description progresses, the length of the sucker rod may be accuratelyadjusted from the exterior of the Well.
Our improvement consists, of a holloW sleeve 3 that has its upper portion, for a determined length, eXteriorly threaded, as at Ll, and through the sleeve the upper portion of the sucker rod 2 passes. The sleeve has screwed thereon an adjustable head member 5. The head at the opposite ends thereof has adjustably associated there- With clamps 6 that bind the ends of a cable or strap iron 7 to the said head 5, and consequently to the tube 3. The substantially U-shaped strap or cable 7 is designed to receive the Working beam 8 therethrough for imparting a reciprocatory movement to the polish rod. The tubular sleeve 3 is 1provided with laterally extending handles 9, Whereby WILLIS, GF COTTON VALLEY, LOUISIANA.
GRIP.
192 sei-iai No. 113,960.
the said sleeve may be screwed through the head 5, and thereby adjusted with respect to the head. y The sleeve 3, at its lower end is provided with a substantially rectangular portion 10 in the nature of a trame or housing, and in the lower Wall ot the frame or housing 10 there rests a disc ll that has on its upper tace a continuous groove that provides an element ot' a race-way for anti- 'frictional balls 12. The second element ot the race-Way is formed on the inner end of a disc 13 similar to the disc 11. The outer or lower end of the frame 10 is centrally formed with a sleeve extension i4 through Which is passed a tubular member l5 that receives the polish rod therethrough. The tubular member has an outer threaded portion which is engaged by a nut 16 that contacts With a Washer 17 to hold the tube l5 on the member 13. The tube l5 is shouldered, as at 18, the said shoulder contacting With the outer end of the sleeve extension 14, and below the shoulder 18 the tube is slotted longitudinally, as at 19. Received inthe slots there are the curved ends 2O ot clamping plates 2l. The curved end 2O ot each of the clamping plates 21 merges into a cross sectionally rounded extension 22. The outer ends of each of the plates 21 are provided With aligning openings 23 and through these openings there is passed the shankof arbolt 24 Which is engaged by a Wing nut 25.
With our improvement it Will be noted that a single hand, by revolving the sleeve 3 through the instrumentality of the handles 9, may raise or lower the sucker rod 2 in the Well casing 1 so that the traveling valve Will be easily and accurately spaced from the standing valve. Ordinarily this requires the employment' of at least three hands either in event that the traveling valve is bumplng the standing valve or When the traveling valve is coming out of the barrel. In case that the sections ot the sucker rod unscreW a single hand may let out the sleeve 3 so that the sucker rods may be again screWed together and then are put back in pumping condition. lVith the ordinary or common sucker rod grip this Work Would require a gang of hands and a comparatively great length of time. Also With our improvement a single hand may take the rig out of gear and repair the plate and put the same in operation, Whereas With a sucker rod grip the Well Would be forced to idle Cil for several hours, thus losing much production. The swivel bearing provided by the elements 1l, l2, 13 and the tube l5 prevents the sucker rod from turning while operating the extension sleeve or screw 3.
Having described the invention, claim l. The combination with the sucker rod of an oil well pump, of a grip therefor, comprising an eXteriorly threaded sleeve through which the upper end of the sucker rod passes, a head screwed on said sleeve, a yoke for the working beam having its ends clamped on the head, oppositely direct-ed handles on the sleeve, a frame on the lower end of the sleeve, a. tubular member that receives the Suc-lier rod therethrough having its upper end received in the frame, spaced members in thel frame through which the tube passes, antifrictional elements between said members, means supporting the tube on the upper member, and means for clamping` the sucker rod in the tube.
2. The combination With a sucker rod for the working barrel of an oil well, of a grip therefor, comprising an eXteriorly threaded sleeve having oppositely directed handles thereon, a head member screwed on the sleeve, a yoke having its ends removably clamped on the head member, said sleeve having a substantially rectangular frame portion adjacent to the lower end thereof, a shouldered tubular member having its outer portion received in the frame, antifrictional means in the frame providing a bearing for the tube, said tube receiving` the sucker rod therethrough, said tube having its outer end slotted, clamps, each including a plate having` an arched portion received in the tube and a lateral extension on thel end of each arched portion, and means passing through the outer portions of the clamps for moving the saine. toward each other to cause 'the arched portions thereof to grip the sucker rod and the lateral extensions thereof to grip the bore of the: sleeve.
ln testimony whereof we affix our signa-- tures. Y
