This invention relates to an improved sandal or that type of footwear such as is found preferable for use at beaches, in the shower room, in gymnasiums, in hospitals, or such as are worn either as a mere protection to the feet or for resting the eet.

An important object of this invention is to provide a sandal of the character abovementioned which is comparatively simple in construction, inexpensive, may be readily placed on the foot, and which is free of any metal or other hard substances which might come in contact with the foot. f Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Referring in detail to the drawing, it 26 will be seen that my improved sandal ma be worn on either the right or left foot, being interchangeable, and comprises what may be termed a sole, or foot accommodating portion 5. This member 5, which for the sake of convenience will be termed a base,

throughout the remainder of the description, is preferably made of rubber or any other suitable and similar substance and is preferably of elongated rectangular structure, being of any desired length and width for fitting various sized feet, and further of any desired thickness.

- At each end thereof, the edge of the base 5 is preferably curved. For the sake of convenience, one end 6 of the base will be termed V the toe portion of the base, and the other end 7 of the base will be termed the heel portion of the base.

For supporting the sandal upon the foot of the wearer, there is provided a somewhat flexible substantially V-shaped retaining member designated generally by the reference character 8. The retaining member 8 includes a pair of identical side members 9 0 which at their converging ends are integral and are provided with a single anchoring device for securing the retaining member 8 to the base at the toe portion of the base.

At their opposite ends, each of the leg side portions 9 is provided with suitable means for anchoring the same to the base adjacent the heelportion 7 of the base.

In forming the retaining member 8 there is preferably provided a single length of rope 10 arranged in a suitable casing or sheathing 11.

The converging ends of the side portions 9, that is at the apex of the retaining member, the same is provided with an extension 12 which is suitably anchored to the pillow or post 16 as at 13. Each of the 'side members, as before intimated, at its free end is suitably anchored in the base 5 adjacent the heel portion 7 of the base and further adjacent opposite sides as at 14.

In using the sandal, the foot is placed on the base 5 and the post or pillow 16 at the toe portion 6 of the base is disposed between two adjacent toes of the foot. Manifestly y the side members 9 of the retaining device 8 will extend rearwardly toward the heel, extending over the instep for suitably retaining the sandle on the foot of the wearer, at the same time allowing ease and comfort to the wearer.

The pillow 16 is suitably anchored to the base 5 intermediate the longitudinal side edges of the base and is preferably formed entirely of rubber. The pillow 16 is enlarged at its upper and lower ends, the intermediate portion of the pillow being contracted as at 17 to fit within the space, preferably between the second and third toes of the wearer. 96

To lncrease the flexib1hty of the base 5 at the junction of the sole portion and heel portion 7 the base 5 is provided with a slit 15, or is slit on a transverse line as at 15.

Even though I have herein shown and de- 95 scribed the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible to changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described, and the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new is z i A sandal of the character described com prising a sole formed of rubber" and adjacent one end thereof provided with a transverse slit opening longitudinally at the bottom face of the sole, said sole member adjacent its opposite end having a flexible post rising therefrom, and a flexible retaining member including a pair of diverging portions merging at their converging ends into an anchoring member embedded in the top of said post, said opposed portions at their, diverging ends being embedded in said sole adjacent the longitudinal edges of said sole. i a In testimony whereof I affix my signature;
